Over the past five years, Southend-On-Sea Borough Council has undertaken a major refurbishment of the Civic Centre situated in Victoria Avenue, Southend-On-Sea, working in conjunction with Architects TTSP. The design, covering thirteen floors, consists of open-plan working environments with breakout spaces, meeting rooms and storage areas.

On completion of the working spaces within the building, Southend-On-Sea Borough Council then turned its attention to the provision of Agile working spaces. These occupy the ground and first floors of the Civic Centre, and take two different approaches.

On the ground floor, the agile space is combined with the new coffee area, where council workers and customers alike can use the space for ad hoc meetings, customer consultation areas, and also just as an area to sit back and relax. On the first floor, outside the council chambers, a more homely feel was created with a mix of soft furnishings and collaborative meeting tables. This area can also be converted into a more formal reception area as and when the council chambers are in use throughout the year.
