Jabarie Glass is an assistant professor of music and the associate director of choral studies in the School of Music at the University of South Carolina. At UofSC, he conducts two choral ensembles, University Chorus and Women’s Chorus, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and music education. His varied conducting experiences have included working with university, secondary, community youth, festival, and church ensembles. Recent engagements include a collaboration with African American song literature scholar Louise Toppin, in which he conducted the 2019 University of Michigan premiere of William Grant Still’s opera, Highway 1, USA. Most recently, Glass conducted Jeffrey Scott’s A Pioneer’s Opus, a chamber work commissioned by the University of South Carolina woodwind faculty to commemorate Richard T. Greener’s legacy as the University’s first Black professor and the first Black graduate of Harvard College. Glass’s scholarship focuses on conducting pedagogy, choral pedagogy, and music literacy. He has given guest lectures and presentations on these topics with university choral programs, at professional development workshops, and at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association. His article on the intersection of literature selection and choral pedagogy was recently published in the February 2021 issue of the Choral Journal. A native Mississippian, Glass earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Mississippi and a master’s degree in music education from the Florida State University College of Music. He earned a doctoral degree in conducting from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

BRANDON BOYDBOYDCOMMUNITY COLLEGE
CLINICIAN
Dr. Brandon A. Boyd is the assistant director of choral activities and assistant professor of choral music education at the University of Missouri, where he conducts the MU Glee Club and Concert Chorale. In addition to his conducting duties, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in choral conducting and choral music education. Boyd appears regularly as a conductor, clinician, composer-in-residence, collaborative pianist, and presenter for All-States, conferences, conventions, collegiate choirs, church choirs, and choral festivals. As an active composer and arranger, his music is sung regularly by ensembles throughout the United States and abroad. He was recently appointed the editor for Gentry Publications. He is also the curator and editor of the “Brandon A. Boyd Choral Series,” a new choral series with Hinshaw Music Publications helping promote exciting and innovative works composed by both established and new composers and arrangers. His music also appears in GIA Publications and Kjos Music Press catalogs. As a proponent of choral singing to build community, his research interests include organizing choirs for the homeless, identifying the social and physical effects of choral singing on senior citizens, and creating authentic field experiences for music therapy and choral music education students. For three years, Dr. Boyd co-directed three choral community partnerships in Florida: The Tallahassee Senior Choir, RAA Middle School Partnership Choir, (university students and middle school singers), and the MTC Women’s Prison Glee Club (university students singing with women housed in a correctional facility). He holds two degrees from Florida State University (Ph.D. in choral music education and M.M. in choral conducting) and earned a B.S. in music education (emphasis in piano) from Tennessee State University.

STUDENT SELECTION PROCESS This year, we have two high school honor choirs. Each high school is invited to bring up to eight freshman/sophomore students and up to eight junior/senior students (balanced SATB quartets are preferred with no more than two students per part). Community colleges are invited to bring three or four balanced SATB quartets for the community college honor choir. Students must be excellent sight-readers, have good vocal technique, and display exemplary rehearsal behavior. If possible, priority should be given to students who will continue to sing in college. Please limit selection to those students who read music well and work hard in rehearsal.
If you have a need to bring a group that is not balanced with voice parts, permission must be sought from Dr. Gregory Fuller ([email protected]).
SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION At SICC, students have the opportunity to earn choral scholarships to The University of Southern Mississippi for the 2021 - 22 academic year. Auditions are open to all high school seniors and community college students who attend SICC. Students planning to be music majors should prepare two songs—one of a fine art (or classical) nature and one from any style. Those planning on being music minors, or who do not plan on majoring in music at all, should prepare one piece of a fine art (or classical) nature. An accompanist will be provided.
FAQ STUDENT ATTIRE School-appropriate clothing should be worn for all rehearsals, and the SICC T-shirt and jeans, or khakis, should be worn for the concert (no shorts for performance).
REHEARSALS To help us make SICC a successful conference, we ask that any deviation from the schedule be cleared with Dr. Fuller. It is important that all conference attendees help our productivity by being present and keeping distractions at a minimum. Please consult with us before allowing any student to arrive late or depart early from any rehearsal or event. PARKING PASSES Parking passes will be available prior to SICC on the web at usm.edu/choirs.
CEUs CEUs are not included in the teacher registration fee but are available at an additional cost. Teachers must attend all CEU sessions in order to receive their credits.
STUDENTS BEST SUITED FOR THE SICC EXPERIENCE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALITIES IN THIS ORDER:strong work ethic, musicianship skills (sight-reading) and choral singing experience.
When making your reservations, please use the conference code SICC to receive special rates. Remember that most of the rooms have two double beds and can accommodate four students, which brings the total cost of lodging to around $18-$22 per student, per night. Make sure to specify if you want double/double rooms or kings. Monday night is the only required night; however, some schools may want to arrive Sunday evening.
