Project Information

Project summary:The Southern Maryland Courthouse is located Greenbelt, Maryland in Prince George’s County. The building consists of283,940 gross square feet on a 9.3 acres site and GSA constructed it in 1994. GSA is submitting preliminary and finalbuilding plans for a 2,000 SF extension to the main lobby entrance that will shift the security station and scanningequipment to a secure location outside of the existing building envelope before visitors enter the first floor atrium.

The U.S. Marshalls Service (USMS) has requested a new secured lobby entrance as a response to the number of personsentering on a daily basis, security during queuing, and the need for increased separation between the secured and non-secured spaces within the lobby. The lobby expansion will be compact and efficient, keeping to about a 2,000 SF plan.Access will be by two exterior double doors and a wide revolving door similar to the existing entrance configuration. Duringheavy use, as many as thirty (30) visitors wait to have their credentials processed. Queuing for up to 30 will be provided.

The functions will include credential check-in by USMS agent(s), processing of visitors and staff through magnetometers, and x-ray scanning of all jackets, clothing, packages, briefcases and/or other objects brought to the courthouse. Scanningwill be done by the USMS and two Rapid Scan units will be used.

In addition, USMS staff must be able to move around the magnetometers and credentialing stations to assist with check-in and observe activities in the area. Further, USMS staff will assist law enforcement officers in placing their side-arms ina locked room adjacent to the scanning devices.
