Life service awardInspired by the Life Beautiful Award presented each year to one male and one female graduate, president John Dowdy suggested to the Southwest Baptist College Board of Trustees in 1955 that the Life Service Award be given annually to graduates whose lives have exemplified the principles which are upheld at Southwest Baptist. Currently, the SBU National Alumni Association Board nominates a maximum of six names of prospective recipients from business, missions, church-related vocations, education, and other fields of service. The recipients are ratified at the spring meeting of the SBU Alumni Board. The award, presented by the president of the University during Honors Chapel at Homecoming, is the highest recognition that the University can bestow upon an alumnus or alumna.

• B.S. in Business Administration from Southwest Baptist College in 1980, M.B.A. from Drury College in 1989, Ph.D. from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2003.

• Married to John Credille ’76 and ’92. They were blessed with two daughters, Jennifer Credille Kaylor ’04 and Pamela Credille ’07 and ’13. They have one grandson, Kagan.

• Member of First Baptist Church in Bolivar, Missouri. Volunteered on mission trips to New Zealand and Russia.

• Involved in PEO International, a philanthropic organization encouraging women to achieve their highest aspirations and advancement.

• Awarded Faculty Life Beautiful award by SBU in 2014.

For 24 consecutive SBU Homecomings, I have had a reserved seat for the Honors Chapel and the presentation of the Life Service Awards. As a fellow alumnus, I have always taken pride in the quality of the recipients’ achievements in both Kingdom and secular endeavors. For this reason, I was astonished and humbled when I was notified of my selection.

Southwest Baptist provided me with both the spiritual and educational foundation needed to serve God in the business world and in the classroom. An integral part of that base came from the dedicated service of its distinguished faculty and staff. Any achievements in my life are the direct result of a gracious Heavenly Father, my amazing husband John, our wonderful daughters, encouraging family members, and a supportive network of dear fellow believers and friends.

Beth Baker Grabowski ’83, ’04Life Service Award Recipient

• B.S. in Elementary Education from SBU in 1983 and M.A. in Education from SBU in 2004.

• Married to Mark Grabowski; they were blessed with two children, Jim Grabowski ’08 and Amy Grabowski Varner ’11. They recently welcomed their first granddaughter, Sarah.

• Father, Dr. Don Baker ’51, is a retired Redford College professor, former director of public relations at SBU and received the Life Beautiful Award as a student at SWBC. Mother, Dr. Pat Baker ’51, is the recipient of an SBU honorary doctorate, Edwin Lightfoot Distinguished Alumni recipient, and the Life Beautiful Award recipient as a student at SWBC.

• Member of First Baptist Church in Bolivar, Missouri. Led a team of SBU students on a mission trip to El Salvador working with Living Water International in March 2015.

• Currently is the gifted education teacher in the Bolivar R-1 School District, completed 20 years of service in public education.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the

Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting

shadows.” James 1:17

This honor is a good gift, and I know it is coming from my

Heavenly Father. I thank Him for this good gift. I am also thankful

for the committee members involved in the selection process and

those who have worked diligently for this year’s SBU Homecoming

events to take place.

I joyfully acknowledge the support of my parents, Don and

Pat Baker, during my years as an undergrad at SBU. I gratefully

acknowledge the encouragement of my husband, Mark, and our

children, Jim and Amy, while I worked on my master’s degree here.

I readily acknowledge the investment that professors like Dr. Twila Smith and the late Dr.

Don Allen made in my life, influencing me at a very deep level.

During my 23 years of teaching, I have seen many motivational posters in classrooms

with sayings such as, “If you can believe it, you can achieve it” and “Never give up.” My

motivational quote is, “Never give up…on God.” Sometimes difficult circumstances of life

seem like they will never end, but never give up on seeking God. We may have to let go of things we

do not feel ready to relinquish, but never give up on your relationship with God. Some seasons of life

pass quicker than we would like, but never give up on your pursuit of God. He loves you and wants to

have a daily and personal relationship with you through His Son, Jesus Christ.

God’s promise given to Jeremiah applies to us today, “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me

with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). To Him be all glory.

Veda williams locke ’50, ’76Life Service Award Recipient

• A.E. from SWBC in 1950, B.R.E. from New Orleans Theological Seminary in 1954, B.A. from SWBC in 1976.

• Married to the late Russell Lloyd Locke. They were blessed with five children: Judith Locke Miller, Martin Locke, Stephen Locke, Charles Locke, and Alan Locke ’86.

• Veda’s late husband, Russell, received the Life Service Award in 1962 after having been on the mission field in Nigeria for 36 years through the Foreign Mission Board (now known as the International Mission Board). Veda’s son, Alan Locke, received the Life Beautiful Award as a student in 1986. Veda’s brother, Wendell Williams, received the Life Service Award in 2013.

• Served with her late husband as missionaries in Nigeria from 1955-1991.

• Awarded Missouri Women’s Missionary Union Emeritus Missionary of the Year in 2014.

• Member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, Missouri, where she serves as WMU Prayer Group Leader, WMU Director, and a Sunday School teacher.

Southwest Baptist College had a significant impact on my life. The Christian values and educational opportunities here helped provide a foundation for the mission work God called me to do in Nigeria. I found joy in the mission service both in the Mission Church I worked in during seminary and on the mission field in Nigeria. I learned many lessons about God’s faithfulness and answered prayer during our 36 years in Nigeria. In retirement, I’m still striving to grow in my Christian walk.

I am both humbled and honored to receive this award from my alma mater. Thank you Southwest Baptist. To God be the glory!

I am humbled to be chosen to receive the Life Service Award. To be honest, I am not sure that I deserve the recognition. I never in my wildest dreams envisioned that I would be standing here today, so when I received the call about the award, I truly was shocked. Nonetheless, it is a very great honor and I am grateful to be selected.

Being considered for this award would not have been possible but for the many people who have helped and influenced me as I traversed through life. People such as my mom who insisted that I get a college degree so that I could take care of myself and who has been a sterling example of Christian servanthood for me;

my husband, who always has been my supporter-in-chief in my pursuit of my vocation and my avocations; and all of my pastors and Sunday School teachers who inspired and encouraged me to utilize my talents and leadership skills to practice the spiritual discipline of service within the church and in the world.

Last, but not least, many of those people who have positively impacted my life have been associated with SBU. They include Marian and Dr. Wilbur Tappmeyer, SBU alums who personally introduced me to SBU; Dr. Robert Derryberry and Dr. Ira Buffington, who recognized and nurtured my speaking and writing skills, which turned out to be the key to success as an attorney; Dr. Twila Smith, whose lessons in the art of teaching have enabled me to lead many Sunday School classes, and Dr. Tom Padgett, whose tour of the European continent opened my eyes to the world beyond the borders of the United States.

For all of those who have cared about me and wanted what was best for me in life, I give thanks to God. To SBU, I give thanks for this tribute.

• B.A. from Southwest Baptist College in 1976, J.D. from University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law in 1981.

• Married to James Thomas; they were blessed with one son, Jordan.

• Member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, where she is actively involved as an elder, usher, director of faith Bible discovery adult education class, and lay liturgist.

• Co-authored article published in the Federal Communications Law and recognized by the UALR School of Law for Law Review.

• Received Edwin Lightfoot Distinguished Alumni Award from SBU in 2005.

EDWIN LIGHTFOOT DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDThe National Alumni Association Board presents the Edwin Lightfoot Distinguished Alumni Award annually to an alumnus or alumna who demonstrates the ideals personified by the late Edwin Lightfoot ’40. The award criteria include alumni leadership in the University, dedication to the education and welfare of youth, and demonstrated support for SBU.

Thank you to the staff, faculty and alumni association board for the opportunity to be among those receiving the Lightfoot Award. The honor goes to God and to many who gave encouragement, guidance, and direction.

In reflecting over the years, I am reminded of people who have influenced my life starting with parents, family, church, and teachers. The only college I considered attending was Southwest Baptist College because of the Christian atmosphere on campus. There were wonderful friends with whom I could talk about spiritual matters. Being with them and praying together were wonderful experiences. For me, Second Baptist Church, where Dr. Harris was Sunday School director, was my church away from home. For a rural, small-town girl, Southwest was a great start in higher education. The classes were small and the professors were willing to give of their time to help us. Classes were begun with prayer and we received a Christian perspective in our subjects. Receiving a liberal arts education here prepared me very well for the studies in elementary education at a senior college.

Southwest was a great blessing in my life. I shall always be grateful to Southwest Baptist College. Thank you, SBU!

Abel Dale Lacquement ’58Edwin Lightfoot Distinguished Alumni Award

My desire is for this statement to express gratitude to an excellent school,

faculty, staff and student body for the honor you have given my wife and

me today. This is the school where wonderful experiences in education

began for us. When we attended, this school had approximately 600 in the

student body, but thanks to the Lord and to the administration, faculty,

staff, and supportive people and churches, just look at the growth of this

school. The phenomenal growth reminds me of our Lord’s parable of a

bountiful harvest in Matthew 13 when Jesus said, “But seed fell on good

ground… and it brought forth a great harvest.” Like Jesus’ parable, there

have been at least five factors contributing to this extraordinary increase

observable to me over this half-century in which this school has blessed

my life. They are seed, soil, sowers, sun, and water.

The seed is the influence Southwest Baptist University has on students. I

came to this school as a music student and with the influence of faculty,

staff and the student body I discovered God’s calling on my life to preach.

This happened 58 years ago and I have pastored Faith Southern Baptist

Church of Moreno Valley, California, for more than 30 years.

The soil is the evangelistic culture of SBU, which has continually

encouraged me in the ministry. As a student, I learned from the daily

chapel experience, as well as the weekend youth revival opportunities

offered.

The sowers are the dedicated faculty and staff who care for each student.

With the excellent tutelage of our fine faculty at SBU, I learned how to

study effectively, which has benefited me as I have progressed through

the doctorate and throughout these years of church ministry.

The sun is the prayer support of SBU administrators, faculty, staff,

students, pastors and church members who are supporting SBU. As

plants will not grow without the sun, just so SBU needs prayer as our

school brings forth fruit to face the challenges that are underway in our

culture.

The water is the Spirit of the Lord, which you may feel just being on

this beautiful campus. We are carried onward and upward by His

wonderful Spirit.
