2 Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router Overview

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) product family is a suite of multiservice edge routers designed from inception to deliver high-performance, high availability routing with service-aware operations, administration, management, and provisioning. The 7750 SR integrates the scalability, resiliency, and predictability of MPLS along with the bandwidth and economics of Ethernet and a broad selection of legacy interfaces, to enable a converged network infrastructure for the delivery of next-generation services.

Service Routing is the Foundation for EVERYTHING

7750 SR

The 7750 SR advanced and comprehensive feature set enables it to be deployed as a Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) for residential services, as a Multiservice Edge for Carrier Ethernet and IP VPN business services, as the aggregation router in mobile backhaul applications, or as a mobile gateway for wireless networks.

With support for service enabled high density 10GigE and 100GigE interfaces, the 7750 SR is also well suited for core routing applications. Available in four chassis variants, the 7750 SR scales capacity gracefully from 90 Gb/s to 2 Tb/s

and beyond, providing cost-effective solutions to address the smallest to the largest network locations.

In this section we will provide a general overview of products in the Alcatel-Lucent IP portfolio trying to highlight main differentiators with respect to what available on the market.

Best-in-class high availability

High availability is more than just redundant hardware. In addition to redundant common equipment and line card redundancy, SR OS supports numerous features that minimize service disruption, such as non-stop routing, stateful failover capabilities, in-service software upgrades (ISSU), and innovative multi-chassis features for service resiliency. Further, the 7750 SR supports service assurance and monitoring tools across IP, MPLS, and Ethernet domains. In short, with a comprehensive suite of high availability features, the 7750 SR is the industry’s most reliable platform for offering non-stop applications and services.

Carrier-Class Reliability

The High Availability (HA) feature makes the 7750 SR-12 better than 99.999% availability system. The basic routing system has no single points of failure. All key elements are fully redundant with hot swappable field replaceable units. The following key elements are fully redundant:

Hot standby 1+1 CPM that has functionally separated 1+1 Data plane and 1+1 Control plane; the fabric works in a load sharing mode. Each IOM has an effective line rate distributed across among the links to the 2 fabrics.

1+1 Power system working in a share load mode N:1 Cooling System 1+1 Backplane pins

Advanced Hierarchical QoS

With today’s IP traffic streams including a range of services consisting of video applications, voice, best-effort Internet access, and mission-critical business services, QoS becomes a critical element for delivering both best-effort and SLA-based services on a common platform. The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR sets the standard with its advanced and highly flexible Hierarchical QoS implementation with hardware support for multi-tiered shaping and policing hierarchies. As it is designed as a service delivery platform, the 7750 SR provides the tools to

define and deliver the most stringent SLAs for high-value, differentiated services.

100 and 400 Gbps (FP2 and FP3) Silicon Technology

The heart of the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR is based on the Alcatel-Lucent industry-leading FP2 and FP3 network processing silicon. The 100Gbps FastPath2 (FP2) chipset is the industry first chipset to process IP/MPLS traffic at 100Gbps data-rates while applying full services. The FP2 datapath is used in the IOM3-XP and the IMM line cards. The FP2 datapath is made up of two internally developed (in-house) ASIC devices, a Traffic Management device and a programmable Network Processor. Access control lists, QoS processing, mirroring, accounting and, encapsulation are all supported on both ingress and egress paths. The 400Gbps FastPath3 (FP3) chipset is the industry first chipset to process IP/MPLS traffic at 400Gbps datarates while applying full services. Clocking in at 400 Gb/s, the FP3 chipset enables high-density 10 GigE, 40 GigE and 100 GigE interfaces with a clear path to 400 GigE interfaces, while concurrently supporting processing-intensive edge routing and mobile gateway services with no compromise between performance and advanced service delivery. With industry-leading performance, high service scale and low power consumption, FP3 will serve as the foundation for the continued evolution of the Service Router product portfolio, providing an unprecedented level of investment protection.

Service-based Filtering

The 7750 SR supports Access Control Lists (ACLs) on a per-service or per-interface basis, with scaling to thousands of line-rate ACLs. ACLs can be used for a wide range of network applications including security, Denial of Service (DOS) prevention and troubleshooting. ACLs can be applied to both ingress and egress traffic without performance penalty. The 7750 SR also supports ACL counters to monitor filter hits and ACL logging to enable monitoring of traffic during troubleshooting. The performance and functionality of the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR combines the speed and density of the fastest routers, with the programmability and packet processing intelligence required to offer new, advanced services over an IP/MPLS network infrastructure. The net benefit is a platform that can adapt to future requirements without expensive and disruptive service outages for hardware upgrades.

The NPA provides significant value (typically >50% reduction in upgrade costs) to customers when compared to alternative architectures based on hardwired ASICs, which lack feature depth and flexibility, and designs based on off-the-shelf network processors, which lack sufficient forwarding performance to operate at 100 Gbps rates and generally have high costs:

Figure 3 – Alcatel-Lucent 7750 service router family

7750 SR-12 has a total of 12 front access card slots. Two card slots are dedicated for redundant common equipment. Each slot of the dedicated card slots can hold one Switch Fabric/Control Processor Module (SF/CPM). Only one SF/CPM is required for operation. A second SF/CPM provides complete redundancy of the switch fabric and the control processors. When two 7750 SR SF/CPMs are installed, the traffic is load shared across the switch fabrics to provide up to 2 Tbps of fully redundant, half-duplex throughput.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR-12 supports a wide range of media and service adapters which are optimized to address different network and application requirements:

Input/Output Modules (IOMs) are optimized for flexibility in deploying a variety of mobile, multiservice, and Ethernet based applications. Each IOM supports up to two Media Dependent Adapters (MDAs) and can also be used to house Integrated Service Adapters (ISAs).

Media Dependent Adapters (MDAs) provide physical interface connectivity. MDAs are available in a variety of interface and density configurations.

Integrated Media Modules (IMMs) are line cards providing integrated processing and physical interfaces on a single board. IMMs provide high-capacity, high-density Ethernet and SONET/SDH interfaces.

Integrated Service Adapters (ISAs) are resource blades that provide specialized processing and buffering for applications.
