When raising a child discipline becomes a major factor between parents. Each parent may have their own individual methods of discipline. This project w as based on a survey looked at various opinions of Tuskegee University Students’ opinions and attitudes towards spanking. Hypothesis In my research I hope to find an idea of using corporal punishment as a means of discipline will be high amongst all participants. I predict that there will be a higher percentage of people who agree with corporal punishment and may even favor it as a way to discipline children. The demographic of the survey is directed towards a student population who’s student body is made up of I high percentage of African Americans. I think this will affect my results greatly due the history of African Americans and corporal punishment to discipline. I predict that children that have been spanked as a way of discipline would be less likely to get in trouble with the police. Finally I think that more people will be likely to use corporal punishment on their children as a means of discipline due to the fact that it was used on them and because of this they understood right from wrong and the consequences at an early age. The information in the graph above shows that the respondents that have been in trouble are significantly high among males than females. The graph shows that male respondents that have been in trouble with the police are 28.21%, while 13.33% of females have been in trouble with the police. We can assume that those who have not been in trouble with police are due to the disciplinary actions used by their parents. We can also assume that a higher percentage of male respondents have been in trouble with the police compared to their female counter parts because males tend to be more aggressive than females. Finally we can assume that those parents who disciplined their children with spanking accompanied with a lecture would less likely have problems with the police. On review of the data it is really clear that the number of parents who used spanking or corporal punishment as a means of discipline their child was substantially high with a high number of saying yes. 2001 Youth Risk Behavior SurveySOWK 300 Computer Applications in the Social Sciences Fall 2010

Lenthina Delaire SOWK 300-01 T-TH

Introduction

In this paper, I will take three variables from the YouthRisk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The three variables that Ianalyze will include, the independent variable is sex of the respondents, and the dependent variable is number of times the respondent had a fight on school property inthe past 12 months and the control variable is therespondent’s grade level. My Bivariate hypothesisincludes the relationship between the sex of therespondent and how often they had a fight on schoolproperty in the past 12 month and my multivariatehypothesis will include the differences between the sexesand the amount of times fights happen on school propertybased on the respondents grade level.

Hypothesis

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) focuseson the priority health risk behavior of the youthand that result in the most significant mortality, disability, and social problems during youth andadulthood. One of the many concerns includesviolence among high school students. In theYRBS I found that among the sexes, both femalesand males fight on school property. No matter what grade children are in they get into fights. In the past 12 months I found that so many high

school children fight on school property. Based onthe information in the YRBS, although there aremore females in high school, I feel that males aremore likely to fight on school property. Bothfemales and males are likely to get in trouble for fighting. Males are likely to get a more seriouspunishment than female.

In the first table it shows that, females and males do fight on school property. In the past 12 months, fights were at a higher percentage in males than

females. Most females did have a fight 1 to 3 times at a percentage of 52.Even though there are more females than males; 48 percent of males foughton school property at least once in the 12 month time period. In the second table; I found it interesting that as both males and femalesfought less as they got to a higher grade. 43.2 percent of males in grades 11to 12 fought less but as they got to those grades it was less males in school.Even females from grades 11 to 12 fought less at a 54 percent, because bythan females are more likely getting ready for college. I was surprise to learnthat more females fought so often. The percentage between males andfemales fighting on school property isn’t too far apart.

Females get punished for fighting on school property as well as males but, males fight more often so the punishments are stricter. Young males have ahigher percent of being aggressive and irrational so they may feel it isnecessary to fight for things like respect, territory and even protection.Females are more likely to fight property, respect and out of jealousy. In highschool this usually will take place on school property.I feel that males are protective than Females, so males may fight more often.Since there is a higher percentage of females in school than males it is safe tosay, that if males do get into fights they are often expelled from and don’t oftenreturn. Since there are more males in juvenile and prison it is likely that; thefight in school do get pretty serious. There are more males in the prisonsystem than females and there more women in the work force than males.

Rationale

The behavior risk is high among females andmales; they are normally are punished for their violent behavior, males a little more strict thanfemales. In my conclusion to this report, youngfemales and males are fighting in and on schoolproperty. Females and Male are acting violenttoward one another at a high rate, even thoughtmales are the lowest in the school system theyare the ones getting a stricter punishment. I feelthat schools should have more mentoring andmediations program so children can talk abouttheir problems. They should use different

percussions in making sure that students feel safeat school.
