All classes are held at the Spa Little Theater in the Saratoga Spa State Park. Play Acting for children ages 6-7, instructed by Kate Starczewski. Students are in-troduced to theater and focus on the actor “tools” and using “play” in acting. Play Acting meets from 10:00am-11:00am and costs $60. Excluded from school and outsiders in their own neighbourhood, the two boys meet Kitten, a local scrapdealer, and begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart. However, when Arbor begins to emulate Kitten by becoming greedy and ex-ploitative, tensions soon start to build, leading to a tragic event which transforms them all.Inspired by the Victorian fai-rytale of the same name by Oscar Wilde, the characters of The Selfish Giant are based on people Barnard met while re-searching The Arbor in and around the Buttershaw Estate in Bradford, including a 14 year old boy called Matty who had been scavenging metal to sell to scrap dealers from the age of 11. Matty had built a makeshift stable in his mum’s council house garden to keep his horse who would pull his cart for scrapping, and could make up to £200 a day when scrap pric-es were high, but his business and livelihood were threat-ened when the local council threatened to end his family’s tenancy if the stable wasn’t taken down. By melding together these two contradictory genres, fairytales and social realism, Barnard’s aspiration is to tell a contemporary, realist fable.

NEW PROGRAM TO ASSIST LOW INCOME VETERANS
SARATOGA CO. - Saratoga County RPC, through its VetHelp division, is pleased to announce the start of a new program to aid veterans and their families in their struggle to main-tain permanent housing. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program can provide monetary relief as well as extensive case management for veteran families that are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Tempo-rary financial assistance is available for rental assistance, utili-ties fees, security deposit, moving costs, emergency supplies, child care and transportation. Case management and referral services include health care, daily living activities, financial planning, transportation, income support and legal assis-tance. The goal of the SSVF program is to promote housing stability among very low income Veteran families who reside in or are transitioning to permanent housing in the follow-ing New York State counties; Washington, Warren, Saratoga, Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Schoharie. He likes cats, but they tend to be afraid of him. He does jump so we limit him to bigger kids. He gets very excited and needs some
time to calm down when someone new comes around. He’s eager to please and tries very hard to do the right things.
He’s very big and can be a little clumsy sometimes. He loves to run at the dog park in Ballston Spa. He’s been to the Farmer’s Market and did really well there with the people and dogs. He’s been to downtown Saratoga also and does well. He loves attention and thinks he’s a lap dog! He’s very protective and
barks at anyone who comes near his “home” until we let them get closer. He’s a very energetic walker and will keep you at a good pace. We do use a prong collar with him because we have a lot of wild rabbits around and he will try to chase them. I love the big lug, but it hasn’t been fair to him. We
can’t let him play with our older dog anymore because of her hips and they’re both dying to play.

DINING OUT Trying to lose weight or alter your diet? Many people are in the same boat. Though it’s easy to control your diet when eating at home, men and women hoping to shed a few extra pounds may need to take a more careful approach when dining out at a restaurant or enjoying a meal at the house of a friend or family member.
The following tips can help men and women eat healthy even when they are enjoying meals away from home.* Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals, especially breakfast, in anticipation of eating larger meals later on is a recipe for disaster. Research has shown that people who eat a healthy breakfast tend
to consume fewer calories over the course of a typical day than those who skip breakfast. * Have a pre-meal before dining out. Don’t attend gatherings on an empty stomach. Snack on fruits or vegetables before heading out the door to avoid overeating later on.* Drink lots of water. Sipping on a glass of cold water when dining out can keep you feeling full while preventing the dehydration that comes from eating too many high-sugar, high-salt goodies. In fact, symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger, meaning you might be eating more when your body really just needs more water.* Practice portion control. It’s nice to dig in to your favorite treats. However, indulging at the dinner table can lead to weight gain. Many people fi nd that they can still enjoy their favorite foods without gaining weight as long as they eat smaller portions and resist the temptation to eat until they feel the need to unbuckle their belts.* Use smaller plates. The bigger the plate you are eating from, the more food you are likely to eat. Use smaller plates at the buff et line so you aren’t piling too much food on your plate. An empty plate can instill a sense of fullness whether that plate is large or small. * Give your body time to realize how much you have eaten. The stomach needs about 20 minutes to tell the brain that it’s feeling full. But when food is eaten too fast, you may have al-ready overindulged by the time the stomach sends its fullness signal to the brain. Fill up your plate, eat slowly and then put the brakes on for a while so that your stomach has adequate time to let the brain know you have eaten enough.
* Order the right sides. When choosing side dishes, opt for healthy, low-calorie and high-fi ber vegetables instead of sides that are high in fat, sugar or sodium. Healthy sides will make you feel full without packing on the pounds.

A review published in a 2010 issue of the medi-cal journal Pediatrics found that children benefi ted from weight training. In the re-view, researchers from the Institute of Training Science and Sports Informatics in Cologne, Germany, analyzed studies that focused on chil-dren and weightlifting. The review looked at studies go-ing as far back as 60 years, fi nding that children and ad-olescents who lifted weights grew stronger. Those who participated in strength training twice per week gained more strength than those who participated just once per week. These fi ndings contradict a long-standing belief that children do not actually get stronger. But while children and adolescents may be getting stronger, researchers found that they do not add as much bulk or obvious muscle mass as adults. Instead, researchers feel the strength changes in children and adoles-cents stem more from neurological changes that make their nervous systems and muscles interact more effi ciently. Though parents have long worried that strength training will stunt their children’s growth, researchers now feel that properly supervised strength training will not stunt growth or lead to growth-plate injuries and will perhaps even reduce their risk of injury as opposed to increasing that risk.

Empties for Animals
It’s great to have the cold snap behind us. As bad as it was, we knew that it would pass. When I think of cold, I always think of the 1816; a year nearly two hundred years ago that produced snow and frost in June, frost in July and another killing frost in August. 1816 was also known as “The Year There Was No Summer” and “Eighteen Hundred and Froze To Death”.
It seems that a volcano called Tambora explosively erupted in Indonesia in April of 1815. This eruption is regarded by many as the largest eruption in recorded history. On the Indonesian archipelago the impact was, of course, devastating with estimates of up to 90 thousand deaths. The size and violence of this eruption forced an estimated 100 CUBIC MILES of dust, ash and sulfuric acid into the stratosphere. Many scientists feel that this dust and ash was responsible for “The Year There Was No Summer”. Other theories involve sunspot activity and still other theories revolve around larger cycles of warm and cool climate conditions that occur every 210 years or so. Regardless of the reason or reasons, the tribulations of the summer of 1816 are legend and had a hand in, among other things, the migration of many New Englanders and New Yorkers out of those areas, and a wave of migration out of central Europe and England to the United States.
Let’s take a look at what they endured. The winter of 1815-1816 was a cold one that started early and lingered late. This was not uncommon and these northern farmers had endured many long winters and late spring cold. April and May were cold but most managed to get their crops in. By early June, the leaves were out on the trees, the corn was up and vegetable gardens were in and growing. It looked like the long winter was over at last. Then things began to go terribly wrong. On June 5th in Williamstown, Mass., the temperature was a balmy 83 degrees, warm for that early in the season. By the next morning, the temperature was 45 degrees and still falling. This cold arctic air wasn’t isolated to Williamstown. From Canada to Virginia cold arctic air caused killing frosts to occur June 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Thousands of birds that had recently migrated into the area from the south froze to death. Sheep, recently shorn, froze to death even though they were brought inside. Farmers built bonfi res around their fi elds to try to save the crops but all to no avail. The important corn crop was virtually wiped out along with most other crops. Even the leaves on all the trees froze, blackened and fell to the ground. There was light snow on June 6th in New York and New England and on the 7th and 8th, more snow was reported as far south as the Catskills. In Danville, Vermont the newspaper reports: “On the night of the 7th and morning of the 8th a kind of sleet or exceedingly cold snow fell, attended by high wind, and measured in places where it drifted 18 to 20 inches in depth. Saturday morning (8th of June) the weather was more severe than it generally is in the winter.” Standing water froze as far south as Philadelphia and in northern Vermont the ice was an inch thick. Even the ground started to freeze!
Remember that this is 1816. No one knew about a huge volcano thousands of miles away. Even if they did they had no reason to believe that it should have any effect on them. All they knew was that their crops were dead and, if they couldn’t get more in right away, starvation the following winter was a real possibility. Talk of famine and the wrath of God were widespread.
By the 12th of June, the outbreak of cold ended. The hard work of planting was repeated. Farmers knew that, in spite of the late start, they still had enough time to get a decent crop of corn and beans and such….if the weather cooperated for the rest of the season. For four weeks the weather held. The second planting sprouted and was growing well. Folks felt a bit foolish about their earlier fears and chalked it up to their renowned New England weather. Their good cheer was not to last.
At the end of the fi rst week in July another, although less severe, outbreak of arctic air spilled over New England and eastern New York. All the crops in the valleys (where most of the farms were) were again killed or badly damaged. There was no snow in July of 1816 but most felt that a widespread famine was inevitable. Those who could procure seed again replanted and everyone prayed. It seemed that God himself had turned against them. Many wondered what they had done to incur His wrath.
After the fi rst week of July, things returned to normal for a few more weeks. In addition to the cold in 1816, it was a dry year as well. In spite of their earlier failures, the farmers (which, at that time, was just about every-body) were optimistic that, if they got a break in September, things would be all right. You’ve got to remember that the only food they’d have the following winter would be what they could grow that summer.
Alas, another killing frost on August 20th visited much of New England and New York as far south as East Windsor, Conn. From Albany to Boston most of the crops again succumbed. Whatever survived that frost was fi nished off by an even colder spell during the last week of the month. As if that weren’t enough, temperatures dipped below freezing again September 11th and 12th. A more widespread frost at the end of September dashed any hope for crops that had managed to escape until then.
The winter of 1816-1817 was indeed a winter of despair; especially for the poor and sustenance farmers who were isolated and depended on their crops to survive. Many tried to survive on milk and bread but bread was in short supply. It was a blessing that the ocean off New England’s coast was so bountiful. The task of feeding New England fell to the fi shermen. Many landlubbers who had never eaten fi sh became very familiar with the taste of mackerel during 1817.
Beginning in 1817, there was a mass migration out of New England to the newly tamed (Indians fi nally killed or driven out) Ohio valley. The temptations of level ground and an easier climate were too much for many who managed to survive that terrible summer of ’16 and winter of ’17.
“The Year There Was No Summer” wasn’t strictly a Northeastern North American event. England, France, Germany and most of Eastern Europe endured a similarly disastrous season. It wasn’t as cold as New England in Europe but they had fl ooding and wet weather that resulted in crop failures of similar proportions. Food riots erupted in England, France, Switzerland, and Scotland as famished people broke into warehouses and took whatever they found edible. For many of these starving Europeans, the lure of the bountiful life in the United States was irresistible at that point. Unaware that conditions were the same on the western side of the Atlantic, they arrived in the New World only to suffer more privations. Many continued their exodus into the interior to begin settling the mid-west alongside recently displaced New Englanders.
Our modern transportation system would prevent famine if another “Year There Was No Summer” occurred now. When the rain and the cold get you down remember, it could be a lot worse. It’s disappointing and frus-trating trying to get a ripe tomato in 2000 but it’s nothing when compared to the trials the weather of 1816 put our forefathers through. Thanks for the read.
