Celebrating Halloween and Fall Affordably
(StatePoint) With the begin-ning of autumn comes time to decorate your home for Hal-loween and harvest, stock the pantry with heartier foods and spruce up your wardrobe with seasonal fashions.Transitioning into fall can be easy by staying on a budget and the shopping experts at Dollar General are sharing ways to celebrate fall afford-ably:
Make a picnic: There’s no better way to celebrate the season than with a picnic at a local park as the leaves change colors, complete with hazelnut cocoa spread and jelly sandwiches, turkey wraps and fresh fall apples. Be sure to pack plenty of re-usable plates and silverware available in rustic fall colors too. It’s an affordable way for the whole family to enjoy the weekend outdoors.Halloween: Welcome trick-
or-treaters with festive yard signs and decorations.  Save on all your Halloween celebrations by stocking up on candy, chocolates, treats and more from national and private brands.  Throw a festive and low-cost Halloween party with simple costumes and spooky décor by fi nding your supplies at a discount store such as Dollar General.   Great free party recipe ideas for dips and snack mixes can also be found online.
Highlight your home: Be inspired by the spectacular natural colors of the season and accent your home with the latest fall trends and harvest décor items. Greet your guests with hospital-ity with a fall wreath and accent your kitchen with new owl-themed housewares. Plus, as the temperatures drop, make your home cozier with throw blankets and area rugs.  Candles in seasonal scents are another great fall addition.
Get dressed: Enjoying the season means you’ll need new items in your wardrobe to stay com-fortable, warm and fashionable. Don’t spend a fortune ramping up your family’s wardrobe with sweaters, knit shirts, jeggings and skinny jeans. A discount retailer will have all the same styles for less, including outerwear and shape wear designed for cooler weather, so you can stay active all season.
Eat well: Warm up the family with hearty meals made from inexpensive ingredients. Name brands can be pricey, so opt for private store brands such as Clover Valley Soup. For main dishes, think about hot entrees that can feed the whole family easily.

Five Tips for Haunting Your
House this Halloween
(StatePoint) Americans spent close to $8 billion on Hal-loween last year, according to the National Retail Federa-tion. With scary celebrations getting bigger every year, becoming the best-decorated house on the block may seem diffi cult -- but it’s easy if you have insider tips and tricks.
“Giving your home a spooky look for Halloween can make or break your trick-or-treaters’ night,” says Larry Kirchner, pub-lisher of Hauntworld.com and owner and operator of the world’s number-one rated haunted house, “The Darkness”.
Kirchner, who has been building and operating Halloween amusement attractions for 25 years, has some tips for turning your home into a spooky haunted house:
• Create a cemetery: “Haunting” your yard sets the tone for your whole haunted house. One of the easiest, most fun, yet eeriest things you can do is turn the space into a graveyard. Let your grass grow long, add a gothic fence and a zombie or two popping up through the ground and make your own tombstone or coffi n to complete the look.
Start by getting pink or blue foam from the hardware store. Cut the foam into the shape of a tombstone and then coat it with light plaster, thin concrete or other textured material found at the hardware or art supply store. Finally, paint it gray, and use a hotwire knife to carve in RIP and a name.
To make a coffi n, use 1x6 pine boards and 2x2s nailed together into a box. Paint the outside and then get creative with your theme. For a Victorian vampire style coffi n, line the interior with velvet curtains. For a deserted Old West theme, use jute or burlap on the inside.
• Spin cobwebs: Achieve that old, abandoned, dusty look inside, or create creepiness outside, by spinning your own cobwebs. Most haunted house supply websites sell cobweb glue guns that use air to spray thin strands of glue. You can create any size cobweb over fake birds, china cabinets or even trees.
• Creepify your windows: Add a red light to the bottom of the windows, and hang torn black curtains to make the windows look creepy when they`re lit. Hang boards across the outside to give the house an abandoned look.
• Add eerie effects: Play spooky sounds on a stereo outside or through open windows. You can fi nd great Halloween soundtracks online. For a dramatic effect, use a fog machine to make the house look otherworldly. You can rent or purchase fog ma-chines at most party stores.
• Break out some black birds: Dollar stores often sell black birds, which you can make frightening by gluing scraps of gray fabric to their feath-ers and buttons over their eyes. Hang them in the yard or throughout the house with black gauze or spider webs from the party store.
This Halloween, get spookily creative. Go beyond a simple Jack-O-Lantern and haunt your whole house.

Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefi t until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil.
During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go fi gure. I guess it sounds too “compli-cated and scientifi c” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water.
The benefi ts of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefi ts of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in forma-tion of plant fi ber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important.
Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidifi cation of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidifi cation occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7).
Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have.
Another benefi t of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fi lls in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Thanks for the read.

Come to Longfellows for this one-of-a-kind event and get nostalgic about your college days. This academic-inspired evening will allow event-goers to reg-ister for “classes” with talent-ed local professionals, who will act as “professors” by donating their time to teach a class (classes will be sched-uled for a later date, so bring your calendar). Attendees who sign up for classes will pay the “registration fee”, but instead of paying the “profes-sor”, all proceeds will benefit Project Lift. It’s a great way to sign up for a topic that in-terests you, while also mak-ing a difference in the lives of local kids! (Please note: the classes will have a set fee with a designated number of slots available for attendees [it will vary by class]. It is not a bidding war. Once the slots are full, the class will be pulled. Sign-up will be on a first-come, first-served basis.) Tickets are priced at $75 for the event, which includes beer, wine, music by KID DJ and food by Longfellows. Traditional silent, live and mission based auctions will also be held. Ticket Prices: $75 – 1 ticket / $140 – 2 tick-ets; $50 – juniors ticket (un-der 30). For more information call 587-9826.

Did You Know? According to the Federal Trade Commission, auto dealerships are not legally obligated to give preowned car buyers a three-day right to cancel their purchase. This means a sale is fi nal once a preowned vehicle buyer signs all of the necessary documents. However, some dealerships do offer a return policy, though that offer will likely not be made unless the buyer inquires about it. When a dealer does provide the priv-ilege of returning the vehicle in 72 hours, the policy may be referred to as a “money-back guarantee” or a “no questions asked return policy.” While many dealers are trustworthy and willing to work with their prospective customers, the FTC recommends all buyers contact their local consumer protection agency and state attorney general to determine if there are any unresolved complaints on fi le with regard to a particular auto dealer. This can help buyers fi nd a reputable dealer and give the buyers some additional peace of mind, especially for those shopping for preowned ve-hicles that tend to carry more risk than a brand new car.

Tips to Make Owning a Car
More Affordable(StatePoint) From gas, park-ing permits and insurance premiums, to maintenance and repairs, owning a car can be an expensive prospect. But motorists can pave the way to lower costs by following a few clever rules of the road:
Reduce Your Rate
Shop around for auto in-surance, as prices can vary widely between companies. For a cheaper rate, avoid pur-chasing a sporty or expensive vehicle. Insurance companies are more likely to give low rates to drivers of reliable cars that have safety features.
Inquire into any discounts associated with a clean driv-ing record. And if you don’t log too many miles per week, you may also be eligible for a low-mileage discount.
Make Smart Repairs
The next time your vehicle needs a part replaced after a fender bender, opt for alternative collision repair parts, which are any-where from 26 to 50 percent less expensive than parts issued by car companies. Such parts also often have warranties that exceed those offered by the car companies.
On average, competition in the collision parts industry saves consumers approximately $1.5 billion a year. Car companies, how-ever, are trying to prevent drivers from utilizing these less expensive parts by enforcing design patents on things like bumpers, hoods and mirrors, say experts.
Supporting consumer-friendly legislation, such as the Promoting Automotive Repair, Trade, and Sales (PARTS) Act, would mean more consumer choices and access to affordable repair parts in the future. More information about the PARTS Act can be found at www.KeepAutoPartsAffordable.org.
Fuel Up Effi cientlyRegular maintenance to your vehicle will help it run more smoothly and effi ciently. So take care of your car.
Pay attention to your route. With the right apps, you can make bumper-to-bumper traffi c a thing of the past. Sophisticated GPS-based technologies can steer you clear of the road blocks and jam-ups that leave you idling and wasting fuel.
For short trips, consider using your own two feet. It’s great exercise and will save you a few pennies in the process.
Make trips to the gas station worth your while by fi lling the tank completely. After all, you are using gas every time you idle wait-ing for a pump.
For most people, owning a car is not a luxury, but a necessity. While some expenses associated with driving are unavoidable, there are steps you can take to make it a more affordable mode of transportation.
