Chairman’s Corner: Business

• AIAA policy papers (Ted Hall) Each TC is encouraged to write policy papers to allow AIAA to become more proactive in involvement with

government policy makers

Policy papers can be one of three types:– Institute level paper, that effects entire AIAA

– Group / TC level policy paper (5-6 pages), created once like a charter or working document

– Rapid policy statement (1 page), created on demand

Need “public policy” liaison or point of contact: Marc Cohen

• Space Architecture AIAA History of Flight volume (Brent Sherwood) Ready for signed contract

Contributors should expect to prepare high resolution images

Chairman’s Corner: Finances

• Bank account (Shahzad Khaligh) Washington Mutual (need signature cards) or PayPal (preferrable -- all online)

Need to maintain a balance

Can function as merchant account to connect to online shopping cart

• Spacearchitect.org webpage (Scott howe) Uses “Agora” online shopping cart that can work with PayPal business or non-profit account

PayPal can allow online credit card or PayPal payments, good for overseas

Yearly web site maintenance costs $322.80 -- Tom Duerr will pay from group funds

Web site maintenance so far since Jan 2005 has cost $1006.03, plus domain name

• Funding (Ted Hall) SATC will get our share of DETC dues pot

SATC voluntary dues will hopefully be payable online

Dues amounts? Call it “website maintenance fee”

Other funding ideas:– Sell anything on shopping cart, such as SATC polo shirts, etc

– Sell books, publications

– Royalties from book sales

SATC Organization

• Subcommittee selection All members need to choose one subcommittee to be a member of

Each subcommittee will need to select a chair and vice-chair

Chair and vice-chair of subcommittees would be candidates for leadership (TC chair position)

Each subcommittee will need to develop a 5 - 10 year plan

• Subcommittees: Oeuvre Subcommittee

– Manage members portfolios, gallery, keeps up on members’ current work

Liaison / Outreach Subcommittee– Proactively sets up and manages liaisons with other TCs, and outreach activities with professional organizations

Symposium Subcommittee– Manages conference chairs, organizes sessions, arranges reviews, etc

Professional Practice / Education Subcommittee– Deals with practice and education issues, organizes workshops, expand job opportunities if possible

Special Topics: TBD– Three or more people interested in similar topic, such as “habitats”, “construction”, “human factors”, etc

– Life Sciences TC is interested in collaborating on a Human Factors subcommittee

• Liaison/Outreach Charter Statement:1. To promote SATC within the AIAA, including coordinating SATC liaisons to other AIAA Technical Committees, and compiling/distributing liaison TC

notes back to SATC members.

2. To build bridges between SATC and other professional organizations external to AIAA. Potential organizations include: American institute ofArchitects (AIA), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME), International Astronautical Congress (IAC).

3. To establish and maintain information which promotes the SATC and explains the profession of Space Architecture.

4. To establish an SATC award in recognition of exemplary projects/work/research which benefit the profession of Space Architecture.

• Charter: To organize conference sessions in collaboration with other organizations.

• Members are conference liaisons and session chairs.

• Liaisons are our POCs to the other organizations, consistent from year to year.

• Session chairs are not necessarily the liaisons – they may change from year to year.

• The subcommittee sets conference strategy and planning and maintains theconference aspect of the 10 Year Plan.

HUMAN FACTORS SUB-COMMITTEE

• LONG RANGE PLAN OUTLINE1. Active participants in Space Architecture: The Human Factor. This Committee will help organize

participation in this book, including both members of the committee, and others.2. Fulfill the role of a TC for AIAA for Human Factors. Liaison w/ other TCs with similar interests in

particular Bob Marrow from Life Sciences.3. Review papers that relate to Human Factors for relevant conferences.4. Create paper tracks re: Human Factors for relevant conferences. Chair, review, create,

moderate, etc.5. Compile list of resources: grants, educational programs, job opportunities, information/papers

on web site.
