Sharing the Vision - RPO’s “Out of the Box - 2013” We’re off to a fantastic start. The RPO spent a beautiful spring evening under the stars at the 2013 “Out of the Box” fundraiser on Mar. 9 at the Baton Rouge Gallery in City Park. With over 230 at-tendees, we raised more than $22,000 toward our goal. The evening was spent with friends and family. We enjoyed delectable creations by Gene and Rebecca Todaro and an incredible solo acoustic perfor-mance by Nashville recording star David St. Romain. While strolling through the Baton Rouge Gallery guests bid on selections from our silent auction, which included “priceless” art created by our children, as well as jewelry, spa delights, gift cards galore, door prizes, a raffle and much more. This event did have something for everyone! Our efforts kicked off a new campaign to begin a large scale improvement of our outdoor space being designed by Chad Danos with Duplantis Design Group. The expansion will include a multi-use Pavil-ion for dining out and outdoor class time, additional covered walkways, shaded seating areas, and an amphitheater with inclined lawn and retaining wall. It will take two to three years to complete this project, but it will benefit our children for decades to come. We appreciate all the support of the parents, friends, and all of our student artists. The RPO is especially grateful to the volunteers and visionaries who made this event possible and the countless man/woman hours that they contributed!

Thank You,RPO President Nicole Duet Latiolais

The Runnels Jr. High Drama Department will present a stage adaptation of four whimsical tales from Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories in the Runnels Theater for the Performing Arts on Thursday, April 18, at 7 pm. (There will be an additional performance for grades 1-6 at 1:30 pm in the Theater April 18.) Said to have been invented as bedtime stories for his young daughter, Kipling published the Just So Stories as a book in 1902. Each selection is a fanciful tale pretending to explain the origin of animal or human characteristics such as how the leopard got his spots. The junior high production brings four of these stories to life on the stage: “The Cat That Walked by Himself,” “How the Camel Got His Hump,” and “How the First Letter Was Written,” and “The Elephant’s Child.” Runnels Theater Program Chair Neena Kelfstrom directs the show, featuring a large cast of 7th and 8th grade students. Their unique spin on these exotic yarns will ensure an entertaining eve-ning. Call the Runnels High School Office at 225-751-2192 starting April 8 for tickets or purchase them at the door for $10.

Runnels High School seniors Suzannah Burke, Madelinn Fink, Elizabeth Forgey, Ashley Kumler, and Callie Tucker were among 20 young women honored Mar. 9 at the National Charity League Senior Soiree held at the Baton Rouge Marriott. The seniors of the River Road Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) together have volunteered more than 625 hours of service in their final year of high school, and more than 2,500 hours of volunteer time to charitable agencies in the Baton Rouge area during their years as members. The National Charity League, estab-lished in 1947 and incorporated in 1958, has 149 chapters in 15 states throughout the United States. Its mission is to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philan-thropic organization committed to com-munity service and leadership development, and to provide opportunities for social and cultural experiences. During their careers with NCL, the graduating seniors served as volunteers for such organizations as Alzheimer’s Services, the American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Sweet Dreams Shelter for Women and Children, Bishop Ott Shelter for Men, Baton Rouge Green, Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Cenikor, Connections for Life, and Vol-unteers of America, Parker House, and Group Homes.

“Swinging from the Heart” ... The Runnels High School Softball Team raised more than $500 for the Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation (LPCF) with its first ever “Red Game” and “Home Run Derby” held Mar. 12 on the Harrell’s Ferry Rd. campus. The charity helps Louisiana families with children fighting heart disease pay for surgeries and other costly medical treatments. Special guests at the game were Hannah Englert, Christopher Arton, and Jean Paul Bourgeois and their families, who have been assisted by the foundation. The three chil-dren served as bat boys and a bat girl for the softball players. The winners of the “Home Run Derby” were senior Ashley Kumler for the Girls’ Di-vision, and eighth grader Dean Campbell for the Boys’. Both received cash prizes of $35. Wearing bright red socks especially for the game, the Lady Raiders romped past the Lady Tigers of Dunham to claim a 12-2 victory, ratcheting up their record to 6 and 0, and their Division 2A standing to 10th in the state. The Lady Raiders and coaches Nicole Dufour and Michelle Middlebrook sincerely thank those who contributed items for the raffle and bake sale, the umpires of the Baton Rouge Softball Umpires Association for donating their fees for the game to the charity, and everyone who came out to support the event.

Grace Carruth-Taylor, a freshman at Runnels, has received one of Girl Scout-ing’s most prestigious honors, the Silver Award, for a letterboxing campaign she and her troop created to help animals in need. She, along with her troop, received the award, which is the highest honor a Cadette Girl Scout can earn and the second highest in the organization, during a ceremony last fall held at LSU’s Greek Amphitheater. The Silver Award project involved creating “letterbox” sites at City and In-dependence Parks to bring attention to the plight of area animal shelters. Letterbox-ing, an activity combining art and treasure hunting, is in vogue around the world. The Scouts wrote letterbox clues about where they had hidden “treasures” in the parks and then posted them online at Atlas-Quest.com. Anybody interested in participating in the let-terbox quest logs into the website and cracks codes and follows clues to physically locate the buried treasures in the parks. For their campaign, the Girl Scouts made stamps in the shape of animals from eras-ers. The letterbox campaign moves from cyberspace to real estate -- in this case the parks -- where the treasures, or prizes, are recovered, put to some use (for this project, the animal stamps were inked and stamped in notebooks), and returned to their hiding places for the next letterbox participant to find. The Girl Scouts also did volunteer work at Yelp!BR and Cat Haven as part of the project. To participate in Troop 10437’s “let-terbox” campaign, visit AtlasQuest.com.

Pi Day ... Math students and teach-ers were literally running in circles Mar. 14 to catch up with the many exciting activi-ties honoring International Pi Day on our campus. (Pi is the circumference of a circle divided by diameter, or 3.14.) During the lunch hour, 7th-12th grade students competed in Pi-related competi-tions such as the “Speed Unit Circle” contest, won by Matt Mitchell; the “Poetry” contest, requiring the use of the same number of letters in each word found in the value of pi. (The first word has three letters, the second, one letter, the third word, four letters, etc.) Sophomores Olivia Arboneaux and Tazkia Shah were the winners. We also had a “Pi Recitation” contest, in which students orally listed as many digits of pi from memory as they could. Tazkia also won this match. Everybody’s favorite Pi Day game, the “Calculate Pi by Throwing Frozen Hot Dogs contest,” was also a big hit. In Koenig Hall, students in Lisa Haller’s el-ementary math classes held their own competi-tion to see who could memorize the most digits of pi. The winners were fifth-graders Ellie Russo (73), Eric Ho (62) and Eli Todaro (51). Mu Alpha Theta also raised $500 for lo-cal animal charities, Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge and the Baton Rouge Animal Shelter, with its “Pie a Teacher in the Face” campaign. High School English teacher Sherry Wilks attracted the most donations, and she graciously went to her “Pi(e)-ing” dressed in a plastic rain cape and hood, saying it was all for a “good cause.” We sincerely thank Mrs. Wilks as well as the math faculty and the countless teachers and students who helped organize Pi Day events.

On International Pi Day, high school teacher Sherry Wilks volunteers to take a pie in the face to raise money for area animal advocacy groups. Administering the “Pi(e)-ing” is fel-low English teacher Rebecca Coursey.

Correction ... In our March 2013 issue, the “Making a Game of Science” story on page 6, contained an error in the caption. Fifth-grade student Taylor Koontz was incorrectly identified as Phoebe Koontz. We sincerely regret the error.

Chopstick Champs ... After mastering the ancient art of using chopsticks, the junior high students in

Yvette Wiltgen’s (at right) Introduction to Foreign Lan-guage classes practiced their newfound skill at lunch Mar.

19 when they were treated to a banquet of Chinese food. They all proved to be champions at using chopsticks, which

was a good thing, because no silverware was allowed at the meal. At their annual Chopstick Contest, Jack Penni-

man, grade 7, was the winner, followed by Lainee Alfonso, who is also in 7th grade. Many thanks to Mrs. Wiltgen for

organizing the activities and providing the meal. IN OUR NEXT ISSUE:
