This booklet illustrates these points with examples of our experience in the education sector at a range of scales.

WehavegainedinvaluableexperiencewiththeretrofitofaVictorian foundry building into our own studios, where we were client,architect,engineerandend-user.

Refurbishingthebuildingenabledasignificantenvironmentalperformanceupgrade.Ourdesignemployedanairsourceheatpump,photovoltaicpanels,naturalventilationandsuperinsulationtothewallsusingblownrecyclednewspapertoachieveaU-valueof0.1W/m2K.

Situatedonanarrowsouth-facingstretchalongRegent’sCanalinLondon, the 1,055m2workplacerefurbishmentisthreestoreysincludingalowergroundflooratcanallevel,andinvolvestheretentionoflistedelements-thesouthbrickwallfacingthecanaland timber roof trusses within. The structural scheme supports thelistedsouthwallwhichisleaningtowardsthecanalbywayofan inserted steel frame which interacts with the existing Victorian steelframeandmasonry.

Our site specific response to this canal context accommodates a twostoreyvolume,withstreetentranceonthegroundflooropeningintoamezzaninelevelofficethatoverlooksasharedkitchenandfurtherofficespaceatcanallevelbelow.Thisconfiguration allows the existing double height windows of the listedcanalwalltoremainastheyare,givinglight,ventilationandviewsontothecanalfromthetwofloorlevels.Thefirstfloorisselfcontainedandopenplan,leavingtheassemblyofexistingroof trusses undisturbed.

Feasibility Study to consider options for upgrading the envelopeofCityUniversityLondon’s1970sNorthamptonSquare campus buildings.

CityUniversityLondonemployedourteamtoadviseonoptionsforthermalimprovementoftheexternalfabricofthese1970sbuildings.TheworkformsjustonecomponentoftheirCarbonManagement plan.

ArangeofoptionswaspresentedtotheUniversityinascendinglevelsofinterventiontothebuilding.Eachwasassessedagainstthe baseline for capital and whole life cost and potential for carbonsavings.TheUniversityiscurrentlyimplementingthefirst of these options to help meet their HeFCe commitments to reduce carbon emissions.

In our report we used a thermal model to estimate CO2savingsandlinkedthistothecostsofeachoptiontoassisttheUniversitywiththeirdecisionmaking.Toachievethehighestcarbonsavings,thebuildingwouldneedtobethermallylinedinternallyorfullyover-clad.Theseoptionsarelesscost-effectivewithlongpay-backsbasedoncurrentenergycostassumptions.Thelowerlevelworkcanbecarriedoutnowleavingopentheoptiontodohigherlevelworklater.

Thestudyfocusedonthefabricofthebuilding.Nevertheless,wewereveryconsciousthat,whenitcomestomakinginvestmentdecisions about managing existing assets, the problem must be looked at in the round.

RefurbishmentoftheCentralBuildingtorationaliseuseofspaces and increase opportunities for college dining, conference and social areas, as well as improving the building fabric and environmental performance.

TheCentralBuildingsweredesignedbyDenysLasdunandbuiltin 1963. The original building functions, as well as the building fabric,areoutdatedandbadlyneedaholisticsolutiontomakethemeffectiveandcomfortablespacesnowandtoextendtheirusefulness for the College into the future.

WereviewedthespatialopportunitiesandfunctionalityofthebuildinginrelationtotheCollegeusagemadeavailablefollowingtherelocationofsomeofthebuilding’soriginalfunctionstothenewlyconstructedpartsoftheCollege,includingtheLibrary.

WeconsultedwidelytodevelopthebriefforrefurbishingtheCentral buildings with the College estates committee, CollegeFellows and students. We used briefing techniques from questionnaires to wider groups including workshops with smaller groups.

ThekeytotherefurbishmentoftheCentralBuildinganditsimprovedusagehasbeenfoundintheunlockingofthecirculation space within the building. The proposed programme ofworkfollowsthestrategyoffirstlyprovidingimprovedcirculationtoincreasetheconnectivitywithintheCentralBuilding,followedbytherefurbishmentoftheindividualspaceswithin it and its building fabric.

Extensiveremodellingofalarge1960ssecondaryschoolineast London on a tight urban site.

Modificationsoverpast20yearstoaccommodateagrowingstudentpopulationhadlostthebuilding’sclarityoforganisation.Newaccommodationwasrequiredwithallavailableexternalareas to be retained as recreation space. The original buildings hadpoorinsulationandleakywindows.

Our fundamental design approach was to switch the main entrance from the north to the south of the site to face the High Streetandthecommunitytheschoolserves.Acontemporaryfour-courtsportshallwasbuiltabovethenewentrancetogivethe building a greater presence on the main street.

Theoldundersizedgymswereconvertedintoadditionalclassrooms,thusbringingredundantspaceintoactiveuse.Thetemporaryclassrooms,nownolongerrequired,wereremovedtocreate much needed additional outdoor recreation space.

Staircaseswerereplacedandfloorsadjustedtoensuretherewaslevelaccessthroughoutthebuilding.Theclarityoftheoriginalplanwasreinstatedbyremovingwallsandfill-ins.Therestoredinternalviewsimproveway-finding.Theremodelledheartofthebuildingallowedforreinstatementoftop-litdouble-heightspacestobringdaylightdeepintotheplan.

Extensiveremodellingofa10-formentrysecondaryschooltoprovide new specialist facilities that can be separately accessed andzonedforcommunityuseandextendedschoolday.

Internalreorganisationoftheschoolprovidesaprofessionaltheatrespace,newTV/audiostudiosandmediaeditingsuitesforthenewdiploma,anewfitnesssuite,andimproveddesign/technology,artandICTclassrooms.AnewinclusionareaofEALand SeN suites has flexible learning spaces, specialist facilities andapermanentandvisitingstaffbase.

Theexistingcirculationhasbeensignificantlyimprovedwithanew lift, replacement of stairs with ramps, and two new glazed doublestoreycirculationlinksinthere-landscapedeastandwestcourtyards.Thelinksreducetraveldistancesaroundtheschoolandprovideplacesforthedisplayoftheartsonthewallsandalong the animated brick base, with integral seating extending to thecourtyardlandscaping.

BuiltbytheLondonSchoolBoardin1899,RosendalePrimarySchool has suffered from a piecemeal approach to refurbishment, which demonstrated little regard to the historic contextandresultedinapoorqualitybuiltenvironment.

Ourdesignimprovestheorganisationofexistingspacetoprovideaclearflowandbetterspacesforlearning.

Thesouth-eastfacingclassroomssufferedfromoverheatingandsolarglareissues,whichhadbeenexacerbatedbytheadditionofglassconservatoriesinthe1990s.Wethermallymodelledeachclassroomtoenableustoinvestigateoptimumimprovementswithinthebudget.Wemitigatedheatgainbyintroducingsolarcontrolledglasstotherelocatedrooflight,allowingdaylighttopenetratedeeperintotheroom.Energyefficientradiatorswereinstalledwithcontrolsandnaturalventilationwasencouragedbyrepairingtheexistingsashwindowsandreinstatinghigh-levelopeningstohallsforcrossventilation.

Wherepossiblewetooka‘fabricfirst’approachtoimprovingtheexternalfabric,suchasinsulatingtheconservatoryroofstoreduce heat loss and draught proofing refurbished windows.

Our holistic approach to design has inspired the Head of School andGovernorstoappointustoproduceafutureplanforimprovements.Inthecurrentsituation,whenfundingisnotregularandofteninsmallamounts,webelieveitisevenmoreimportanttohavealongtermstrategicplantoavoidshorttermthinking.

We are helping the school measure and understand their CO2 emissions using the Atlas Toolkit (www.atlasschools.org).

Having established an strong working relationship with theBritishFilmInstitute(BFI)whiledesigningitsMasterFilmStore,we were asked to assist them with developing a masterplan for the phased improvement of its Conservation Centre in Berkhamsted.

The original 1980s building was designed for the workflow requiredforcopyingnitratefilmontoacetatefilm,aprocesswhichisnowobsolete.However,theneedfornewdigitisationsuitesandareasforpaperconservationhavebecomeapriorityfor the bFI. As a consequence of master copies of acetate film movingtothenewMasterFilmStore(seepage10),oneoftheexistingfilmvaultsatBerkhamstedwasavailabletobeconvertedtoanenvironmentsuitableforthePhotographicStillsCollectionand other media.

WeconsultedwiththeBFItodevisepackagesofworkthatcouldbefundedseparately,belogicallysequencedandofferthebestvalueintermsflexibilityforfuture.Allthiswasdonewhileconsideringhowtomakethebuildingfabricanditsservicesmoreenergyefficienttoreducerunningcostsandimprovetheenvironmentforthecollectionsandthestaff.

The first phase was completed in 2012.

After winning an international competition we were appointed, incollaborationwithlocalarchitectsKNTA,tobeoverallmasterplannerfortheSingaporeManagementUniversity’s239,000m2newcitycampus,andasarchitectsforfiveoutofthesixfirststagebuildings.

The £89m campus was the first of its kind; designed, integrated andconstructedfromscratchinthecentreofadevelopedcityscape.Fourschoolsandalibraryarelinkedatbelow-groundconcourselevel,allowinguserstomoveundercoverfromoneendofthecampustotheother,andenjoyviewsintotheopencourtyardsthatconnecttheconcoursetothestreet,parkandcampusfacilities.Theporousspacesprovide‘breezeways’tohelppre-conditiontheincomingair.

The campus for 6,000 students is in the heart of the historic and cultural centre of Singapore, in bras basah park. The design keepsasenseofopenspaceandvisualconnectionbetweenthe historic buildings that surround the campus, such as the Singapore Art Museum, the National Museum and the Cathedral.

Avisuallyappealing‘green’themerunsrightacrossthecampus.BuildingsoverlookingthereconfiguredBrasBasahParkhaveglazedfaçadesshadedbya‘verticalgarden’ofclimbingplants.

Asthesiteissurroundedbymatureraintreesgreatcarehadtobetakenduringconstruction.Thedesignwasdevelopedonafast-tracktoensurethatthepilingwascompletedaheadoftheboring of a new underground line under the buildings and was successfullycarriedouttoschedulewithfewchanges.

Autumn1999sawtheUniversityofEastLondonmove2,400students to the Royal Albert Dock on the Thames, in a classic exerciseofbrownfieldurbanregeneration,tobegintounlockthe urban redevelopment of an area with little infrastructure.

ThecampusisdesignedwithahighperformancelowenergyfreshairdeliverysystemthatallowsthewindowstobekeptshuttokeepoutthenoisefromLondonCityAirportopposite.

ApproachingthenewcampusfromCyprusDocklandsLightRailwayStationtothenorth,yourisethroughanovalforecourt,upthroughthecentralcolonnadedUniversitySquaretothegreatlawnoverlookingthedock.TheLearningResourceCentre,the main auditorium and the shops and cafes and main entrance, aregatheredaroundthispedestrianheart.Tomaximiseflexibility,a range of academic spaces are composed around an enclosed linearstreet:facingsouthoverthedockarethelecturetheatresonthegroundfloor,twofloorsofofficesabove,alltoppedwithdesign studios.

384studentroomsaregatheredinbrightlypaintedpairedtowers that spin along the dock in front of the higher main façadeoftheacademicaccommodation,whosesilverandwhitecliffismarkedbyfourcombinedliftandstairtowers.

The£33mdevelopandconstructcontractforthe19,300sqmphase1wasadoptedasDemonstrationProjectno.49withintheMovementforInnovation.
