Caused U.S. scientists to frantically work- First success on January 31, 1958

Significance of Sputnik

Raised funding for peoples education from $183,000,000 a year to $222,000,000 a year

Was a result of U.S. realizing we were falling behind the Soviet Union in terms of technology

Provided the country with special defense personnel by providing federal help to foreign language scholars, area study centers, and engineering students

Resulted in more U.S. students graduating and going to college and advancing in technology

Home of the first people (Neil Armstrong) to set foot on the moon

First to conduct a lunar orbit with people on board

John Glenn was the only survivor of the Mercury Seven who wanted to be the worlds first astronauts

Alan Shepard was the second person to enter space and the only one from the Mercury Seven to walk on the moon
