• FOREGROUND: the part of a view that is nearest to the observer, especially in a picture or photograph.

• MIDDLE GROUND (MID-GROUND): the middle distance of a painting or photograph.

• BACKGROUND: the area or scenery behind the main object of contemplation, especially when perceived as a framework for it.

SPACE: Shapes and forms exist in space. Space can be implied by the

use of artistic devices: Scale, Overlap, Modeling (shading),

Atmospheric Perspective, or Linear Perspective. Space can also be

Positive or Negative.

POSITIVE SPACE: The shapes or forms in a composition.

NEGATIVE SPACE: The emptiness or areas between, around, above or

below the objects in the composition.

1. Look at the backgrounds provided for you on your table. Choose the one (1) you would like

to work with and return the extras to instructor.

2. Using the magazines provided, begin looking for the following 16 images:

Five small images less than an inch,

Five medium images 2” – 3”

Four large images 4” – 5”

One extra large image 6” – 8”

These images do not have to have a central theme but can if they would like to.

3. Cut around the contours of the image, disregarding the negative space

4. Arrange the 16 images on your background so that you establish a foreground, middle ground and background. Remember the

techniques commonly used: size, overlap, atmospheric perspective, linear perspective,

shading.

5. Once you are confident in the placement of your images, glue them into place.
