Intro to ArcGIS Move the Space Shuttle Challenge. Key mapping skills taught- What should a map have? Key, Scale, North Arrow, Legend, Title, Date, Sources, & Aesthetics. 1. Sign up a free school access for the online version of ArcGIS- http://www.esri.com/industries/education/schools# 2. Have the students sign up with their email and then establish a password (good opportunity to possibly discuss or mention digital footprints and appropriate email addresses) 3. After signing in students should all look up their home address, a popular destination in town, or an assigned address. 4. Introduce the basemap tab and how to change basemaps: Which basemap do you think you would use for directions? As an engineering? Planning a new electrical line? Etc. 5. Introduce the zoom buttons and discuss changing scale. 6. Introduce measure buttons (don’t forget to discuss unit of measure and appropriate unit) a. Measure their street length b. Measure their lot size c. Measure the size of their house 7. Introduce map notes a. How to add a point b. How to add a line c. How to add an area 8. Introduce how to change the color of a point/line

1. You can temporarily remove any light poles that are not wooden.2. Powerlines can be moved if clearance is needed
