Welcome to Spanish Language Center!! Thanks for choosing our school in Marbella to learn Spanish or improve your level and competences. You could personally check that in our school you will not only find a wide range of Spanish programmes and a highly qualified teaching staff, but also anything you might need during your stay and that may help you to study in a more efficient manner: effective teaching methods, modern facilities, personalised attention (in and out of class) as well as a careful selection of lodgings. As you will already know, SLC was established in 1999 and it is currently one of the most important Spanish schools in Spain, specialising in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. SLC is also a centre accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, which means that it complies with the conditions established by Instituto Cervantes Accreditation System, the only accreditation in the international field focused exclusively on the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. SLC receives annually around 400 students coming from all over the world (Germany, France, Ireland, England, Norway, Netherlands, Philippines, Russia, China, America, Africa, Australia, etc.). You will probably find a greater presence of European (65%) and Eastern European (15%) students throughout the year. The mix of university students, Au-Pairs, executives and professionals, and retired people creates an international, culturally rich and varied atmosphere. Our teaching staff as well as the personnel in charge of the services to the student will be delighted to make your stay as nice and productive as it is possible with nice and unforgettable memories of the language and Spanish culture, the city of Marbella and popular traditions. There are no classes on holidays and these lessons days will not be made up. As an exception, in case there are two public holidays during the same week (from Monday to Friday) all the missed lessons for one of those days will be made up or replaced by Spanish lessons or a special activity. The school staff will inform you when you will take those lessons. GENERAL CONDITIONS

Depending on the level of Spanish you have, there are different books (A1-A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). The cost of each book (+ CD) is 25 €. When you change your level you will have to buy a new one. You can buy it at the school's Reception. The application fee includes supplementary didactic extra material provided by teachers in class.

The payment of the courses extensions must be done in advance at least one week before the end of the currently course.

We reserve the right to expel any student whose behaviour is detrimental to the well-being of the programme (course/lodging) and no refund will be provided.

For changes in course and/or lodging after arrival, we charge an administration fee of 30€.

Cancellation of the course after the arrival. If you need to leave the school after starting the course, it is required to give us a notice in writing form 2 weeks ahead. You will be given a credit note for the tuition fees for any time remaining after 2-weeks period. This mentioned credit note will be valid for 12 months after the date of issue and is not transferable. If you do not report it to us in this way, the amount of these 2 weeks will not be refundable and they will be deducted from the credit note.

Cancellation of the accommodation after arrival. If you need to leave the accommodation after your arrival, you will be required to give the school two weeks’ notice in writing. The balance of accommodation fees will be refunded less 1-week’s accommodation.

A minimum of 90% of attendance is required to obtain the certificate of attendance and academic progress.

In no case students can recover single days of missed classes. They will only be able to recover full weeks as long as they have previously notified their absence by email, or in written form to administrative staff at least one week before. SLC can not guarantee that they will continue exactly in the same unit when they return to class. The courses will not be able to be postponed for more than 12 weeks for unjustified reasons. In this case, the student will lose any right to get a monetary refund of both: the course and the accommodation and they will not be recovered.

For any complaint, please, go to the School Reception, we will be happy to solve any problem. You can also offer us your suggestions through the suggestion box at the school reception.

There are two periods to the different language skills and different teachers

1. FIRST PERIOD (from 10.00 to 11.50) It is devoted to the Reading and listening skills. - Reading Comprehension: The development of your Reading abilities will be made through original texts and graded readings for each level. The student, with the help of the teacher, will interpret orally the written texts. Orthography, vocabulary and punctuation will also be studied. - Listening Comprehension: Listening activities from the texts will be played to improve the Reading comprehension and it will also be worked through songs to improve this skill. - Grammar and vocabulary: Study of the linguistic and grammatical functions so as the Spanish rules through different text books, own material and interactive games that will help the student to perfectly assimilate the corresponding knowledge to its linguistic level.

2. SECOND PERIOD (from 12.10 to 14.00) Specifically dedicated to oral expression and comprehension. - Oral Comprehension: There will be used real documents didactically created for reading. The student with the help of the teacher will develop his oral abilities and will interpret audio-visual situations as well as with texts. - Oral expression and interaction: The student will participate actively in different activities directed by the teacher such as presentations, debates, talks, discussions and simulations. These activities will be suggested by the teachers with the help of the didactic material designed for them. Pronunciation, phonetics, sentences intonation will also be studied. - Writing: The student will do written exercises from simple sentences to complex texts depending on the student’s level and the unit of the book he/she is studying. EXAMS AND COURSES CERTIFICATES You will have to take different exams during the course (every 3 lessons and at the end of each level), so that we can ensure your correct evolution. In addition, remember that, as a school Accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, we offer you the option of registering and preparing for official DELE examinations (Official Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language), which prove the degree of competence and mastery of the Spanish language. LODGING The lodgings are at the student´s disposal from the previous Sunday to the first day of the course (Monday) and from 12.00 p.m. until the subsequent Saturday to the last day of the course (Friday) and also until 12.00 p.m. If during your stay you have any problem or wish to change accommodation for any reason, you must notify it at school reception as soon as possible. If you want to extend your stay, you must communicate it with a week in advance. SLC cannot guarantee you the availability of room in the same family home/shared apartment. Remember that you are responsible for the damages occasioned at the accommodation and the loss of the keys. In the case you booked lodging, please, check the accommodation student guide for further information. FAMILY HOME (minimum 16 years old) Taking the lodging in a family you could close-up know the way of living and the Spanish habits at the same time of practising your knowledge of the language. For SLC, the satisfaction of our students is essential; therefore, all our families have been personally supervised. Most of the families live at a very short distance from the school (15-20 minutes) or have an easy access to public transport. Do not hesitate to ask your family about how you can get to school!

The host family will clean your room, and will provide you with sheets and towels and you have the right to have your clothes cleaned once a week

Please, take into account:

You could receive (NOT to phone) calls at the host family telephone provided that it does not interrupt the normal use of it and they are on convenient hours for the host family

According to the board requested you will have access to the following meals: Breakfast, Half board (breakfast and dinner) or Full board (Breakfast, lunch and dinner).

- In Spain, BREAKFAST is lighter than in other countries basically consisting on coffee with milk and toasts with butter, jam or oil and/or biscuits

- LUNCH It is the central meal consisting on 2/3 courses. The first one can be salad, gazpacho (summer), soup or stew (winter) and for the second it is served meat/fish, pasta, rice, etc. The dessert can be fruit, yogurt or sweets. Spanish families use to eat from 14.00 to 15.30.

- DINNER time is generally from 20.30 to 22.30. Salads, omelettes or finger food tend to be the menu in most of the cases. It is important that you respect the family meal timetable

STUDENT APARTMENT (Minimum 18 years old) Lodging at a students’ apartment is the best option for those seeking independence at the same time they build international relationship and friendship. The students’ apartments are just 3 minutes away on foot from the school, very near from the Old Town and just minutes far from the beach.

The lodging includes WIFI and once a week cleaning service of the common areas (kitchen, bathroom, living room and terrace)

Towels and bed linen are included. Please, take into account:

The student will be in charge of keeping everything tidied up and cleaned as well as throw the rubbish. Keep in mind that you are not living alone and after you another student may also need to cook or use the bathroom. It is highly important that all the students respect the rules of cohabitation.

There is a 150€ deposit which will be refunded (except 20€ for cleaning purposes) at the end of your stay if everything is correct.

ACTIVITIES

The school teaching plan provides during the class schedule, a variety of activities for all levels; tours, excursions and cultural immersion for you to meet the daily life of our city, and practicing your Spanish at the same time. In addition to these activities included in class, SLC offers two additional free weekly lessons about culture, history, gastronomy and other topics of interest. To organize them it is necessary a minimum of 3 students enrolled in the activity. You can register yourself in the information board located in the school's reception where we will inform you if any minimum level of Spanish is required. Furthermore, to these activities, we also offer the possibility of visiting different places of special cultural and tourist attraction: Gibraltar, Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Ronda, Tanger, etc. for a very affordable price:

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT MARBELLA The city of Marbella is divided into different districts:

What it previously was a small fishermen white town, it is nowadays one of the most cosmopolitan places at Costa del Sol with the most famous sea port in the Mediterranean, Puerto Banus, where the most famous and legendary yachts have docked. This jet-set centre, residence or vacation place of princes and rich people is presented as a clean, cared and safe city with nice boulevards, parks and gardens. Its Old Town, full of narrow streets is adorned with azahar perfumed flowers. Its origins go back to Paleolithic and Neolithic times. Some historians believe that the first settlement on the present site of Marbella was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC. Recent discoveries in Calle Escuelas and other remains scattered throughout the old town testify the Roman occupation. During the period of Islamic rule, the Caliphate of Córdoba fortified the coastline and built a string of several lighthouse towers along it. On June 11th, 1485 the town passed into the hands of the Crown of Castile without bloodshed. During first part of 19th century, Marbella focused its economic activity on industry with iron-smelting operations, but the development of the touristic resort which we know today started in the second part of 20th century when our city started to be frequented by members of European aristocratic families with famous names: Bismarck, Rothschild, Thurn und Taxis, Metternich, de Mora y Aragón, de Salamanca or Thyssen-Bornemisza, thereby transforming Marbella into a destination for the international jet-set. Marbella focuses its activity in giving its thousands of visitors endless possibilities: delightful beaches, numerous golf courses, leisure ports, wonderful natural environment, luxury hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and an intense night life, all together makes the city a sublime scenario with enriching possibilities. Furthermore, due to its location and the mountains surrounding the city, Marbella enjoys a special microclimate with soft temperatures the whole year (average of 19º)

CELEBRATIONS AND FESTIVALS Twelfth Night Parade 5th of January in the afternoon the Three Wise Kings traverse the streets throwing sweets to the children that wave and welcome them. After that, they deliver the presents in each house.

Between February and March, before Lent, Carnival is celebrated and all the cities make competitions of comparsas, murgas and chirigotas, which are the different names used to name the street musician bands that sing satirical songs about the current events of the country.

Probably the most recognizable and popular feast in Andalusia is Easter. From Palm Sunday until the Resurrection day, religious images are displayed on a religious parade remembering the scenes of Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.

Marbella celebrates, the third of May, the day of Juanar Cross, with the ascent to this mountain of Juanar next to where it is located the cross of the same name, highlighted symbol of the history of the city.

Also in May it is celebrated the day of the Cross, a famous tradition in nearby cities like Granada or Cordoba, streets are full of crosses adorned with flowers.

In spring takes place the Corpus Chisti parade that traverses the streets of the town which are decorated with natural flowers carpets, little altars and adorned balconies.

The first and second week of June, Marbella celebrates San Bernabé Fair, being celebrated in the mornings in the streets of the city and at night at the Festival area. The most important day is June 11th in which it is celebrated the Conquer of the Catholic Kings including bullfights and music concerts.

The night of San Juan is a peculiar feast linked to the tradition of solstice. At midnight of June 23rd all the beaches of Andalusia light bonfires commonly called “juas”. The fire rite uses to be accompanied by beach parties with music and food, commonly known as moragas. There are also fireworks. To attract good luck, people wet their feet at the seashore exactly at midnight as well as jump the bonfires three times.

The maritime parade of Virgen del Carmen is celebrated on July 16th and it is one of the most popular and important parades. Being the patron saint of sailors, maritime parades take place in most coastal areas. It consists on traversing the Virgin in a boat covered with flowers.

Starlite takes place every year in July and August in the auditorium of Marbella. Considered as an European cultural festival reference, it has a daily program that includes music, fashion, art and films in a natural area with restaurants opened every night and drinking area with entertainment under the stars. From August 13th to august 23rd, Malaga celebrates its Great Fair. From midday until 19.00 the streets and pubs of the city centre are packed out by people who dance and celebrate what is called “La feria de día”. At night, the celebration moves to “El Real”, name given to the celebration area, filled by dozens of stands, of public access, where people can enjoy dancing and trying the typical products of the area. The second fortnight of October, exactly the 19th, it is celebrated San Pedro Fair. For a week coinciding with San Pedro de Alcántara’s Day, we can enjoy of its undoubtedly Andalusian taste feast. The first of November it is All Saints’ day. The population of Marbella moves to the countryside for “Toston Day” in which it is typical to cook chestnuts and drink local liquors. December 28th is Holy Innocents Day when everyone prepare and make jokes. Christmas Eve is the time to meet the family; it is the time to celebrate the arrival of our Lord to Bethlehem, present mainly at every house with the representation of the nativity scene. GENERAL INTEREST INFORMATION POSTAL SERVICE If you want to send a letter or a postcard from Spain, you can use the yellow letterboxes that are distributed around the town or go directly to the post office (from 8.00-20.30) that is located just behind the school (Jacinto Benavente Avenue), and where you can get stamps, envelopes and special parcels for the dispatches. You can also buy stamps at the tobacco shops, where they also sell phone cards for phone boxes and mobile phones. We recommend caution at bus and train stations or airports. - Do not leave your belongings unattended at pubs, platforms or beaches, etc. - Do not take strangers’ belongings or luggage. - Keep safely your personal documents, mobile phone, money, agendas, etc. - In case of robbery, urgently contact the nearest police station or dial 901 or 902 COMMERCIAL HOURS The commercial area of Marbella is located in the Old Town and Ricardo Soriano Avenue. The general timetable in Spain, and particularly in Marbella, is from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00. In summer most of the shops extend their hours until 21.00. Malls offer uninterrupted hours from 10.00 to 22.00 from Monday to Saturday. La Cañada shopping center is located at Road to Ojén. You can find a 24-hours pharmacy 2 minutes walking from school.

OLD TOWN We want to make you discover the historical and architectural buildings

of Marbella Old Town. Its pavement is practically the same as it was back at the 16th Century. It is preserved splendidly in favour of an intense commercial life where there can be found the greatest diversity of shops framed by white narrow streets with balconies full of geraniums.

THE CASTLE This building, located at the Old Town, is the only one preserved from Arab times. The fortified Marbella of the Arabs covered approximately an area of 90000 square metres. On this reduced area, it would be extended a maze of narrow streets that still today preserve its structure.

IGLESIA DE LA ENCARNACIÓN At the very heart of the Old Town it is located one of the most beautiful and popular squares: the Square of the Church in which ¡t was erected the Santa María de la Encarnación Church, built in 1505. On the old foundations of the old parish, the current one was built in 1712.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PLACEMENTS - Paleocristian Basílica Vega del Mar. (San Pedro). 5th century, surrounded by a

Visigothic necropolis with more than 180 burials of different typology. - Thermas of Guadalmina. (San Pedro). 2nd-3rd century, situated 500m from the

Basilica. In addition to their hygienic use, they were a social gathering place. - Roman Villa of Río Verde. (Marbella). 1st century, situated close to the municipality,

known since the 18th century, and it hasn’t been fully explored yet. The uncovered area includes a courtyard framed by columns (peynistylum) and a dozen rooms whose purpose was to give light to the interiors.

DALÍ SCULPTURES In the central Avenida del Mar, there is a permanent outdoor exhibition of sculptures by the great artist Salvador Dalí. A unique collection, which we can admire as we stroll by the sea.

PUERTO BANÚS It is one of the most attractive areas in our city. Named centre of national touristic interest and awarded with the golden medal to the touristic merit, it is visited annually by more than four million people. Established in 1970, it holds 915 docks for ships between 8 and 50 metres length where some of the most famous and luxury yachts in the world are docked.

BONSAI MUSEUM A perfect place to contemplate these interesting little trees with your family. It has a great variety of bonsais from different species.

CORTIJO DE MIRAFLORES MUSEUM Built on the foundations of a needlework house, it is a lovely place where you can attend conferencies and expositions.

CONTEMPORARY SPANISH ENGRAVING MUSEUM. It is a building from the 16th Century, built on three previous Arab houses, which gives the building its asymmetry. It was the residence of Mr Alonso de Bazán, mayor of the castle and perpetual councillor of the city. In this construction, there is a mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Mudejar elements. www.mgec.es/wp
