History of Seville’s Cathedral

General informationArchitect: Juan de CastilloOpening: 1528History: The cathedral's construction lasted over a century, from 1401 to 1506. The basilica occupies the site of the great Aljama mosque, built in the late 12th century by the Almohads, the ruling Moorish dynasty, of which the only remaining parts are the Patio de Naranjas, the Puerta del Perdon (on Calle Alemanes, on the north side), and the Giralda (formerly the minaret, now the belltower).

Basilica of CovadongaThe BasilicaWhen ascending the steep curves to the sanctuary one finds it there, suddenly, in a steep place. Very close to the Santa Cueva is the Basilica of Covadonga. Built between the years 1877-1901.For its construction was used stone of the same mountain of Covadonga, from there it obtains its characteristic rosaceous color. It was King Alfonso XII who in an inaugural act of the works fired the first borehole used to fly Mount Cueto over where the basilica is currently. The spectacular bell known as "La Campanona" is three meters high and weighs four tons. How to get:From Cangas de Onís, take the AS-114 for about 2.5km, at the roundabout take the AS-262 that goes up to the basilica. The way is indicated.Note: On busy days, especially in summer, accesses may be collapsed and access may sometimes be cut off in a private vehicle. For this there are minibuses that take visitors to the basilica as well as the lakes. History about itCovadonga is the place where the Reconquista was begun by the king Pelayo. It is the gateway to the Picos de Europa National Park. The basilica, next to the cave where the image of Santina is venerated, is a place of worship and pilgrimage of all the Asturian people. The basilica is a Neo-Romanesque style building, with two tall towers flanking the main portal. Inside it houses works of great value, such as a Madrazo canvas. In the square of the basilica is the statue of King Pelayo. In a cave, which is accessed by a large staircase, is the image of Santina, the tomb of King Pelayo and that of King Alfonso I. From the cave a cataract emerges and at the foot of it a source of seven pipes. At the altar, a gold panel represents the battle of Covadonga.
