Member Profile

Lisa Cummins

Lisa Cummins was elected to the MPPOA Board of Directorsthis spring, and begins her service to the association as theProfessional Recognition Chair.

She began her career with City of Rochester Hills in January2003 after receiving a Bachelor’s of Business AdministrationDegree from Baker College in June 2002. Lisa’s first fouryears were spent working in the City’s Accounting division. She accepted the position of Purchasing Analyst in December 2006.

As a professional who values continuing her education, Lisasays, “I am working toward obtaining my CPPB certificationand hope to become certified by next summer.”

Lisa lives in Lake Orion with her husband Matt, her two-year-old son Nathaniel and their Golden Retriever, Jesse. She enjoysscrapbooking, doing crafts, camping and any activity thatinvolves being outside. In addition. Lisa is also an avid softballplayer and a HUGE sports fan.

We have just caught up with Daryl ( Dar) Perkinsa year after her retirement, and even that hasn’tbeen easy. Dar is on the go!

Three days a week, while she’s in town, Darvolunteers at a nursing home, and another day aweek, she spend time helping out at Kalamazoo’sAir Zoo. However, she spent two months this lastwinter in Arizona, close to her eldest daughter, who lives in California.

After 34 years working for the Kalamazoo County RoadCommission, you would think she would put her feet up, a little.“Purchasing was just one of my hats,” said Dar. “When you work for asmall entity, you have to wear many, and in 1988, when I waspromoted to business manager, purchasing was included.”

That’s where MPPOA came in. She loved being in a group ofprofessionals who knew purchasing. “My education and certificationwas huge for me,” she said. “It made an enormous impact on the waypurchasing took place at the Road Commission.” She said thatMPPOA kept her current, and kept that aspect of the job undercontrol. “Joining MPPOA was pivotal for me,” she says.

In August, Dar is welcoming her first grandchild into the family.Since he’ll be right there in Kalamazoo, she plans to spend plenty oftime with her daughter’s family. She has several “trips of a lifetime”planned, too. In October, she’ll be going to Italy, staying in a villa inTuscany and visiting Rome and Venice. And if that’s not idyllicenough, she is also going to the Holy Land with a Bible study groupin February of 2009.

Of course Dar has also taken classes and, to top it all off, she’s goingto be a bridesmaid in her niece’s wedding in September.

Has she made you want to retire? It’s certainly not all bad!

Joe Hylla leaves Oakland Co.Many of us know the voice of Oakland Countypurchasing as that of Joe Hylla. Joe left his post atthe county earlier this year, but isn’t ready to sit ina rocker. “There’s a lot I haven’t done, and a lot ofpeople I haven't met yet,” says Joe.

Joe has recently been helping out Ford MotorCompany with their global purchasing by developing three partycontracts. His position there will end soon, as Ford decreases theircontract workforce.

A former president of MPPOA, and Marvin Klang award winner, Joewas well known in purchasing circles for his integrity and innovation. He offered his expertise to others in the group as a speaker for regionalmeetings and was a key “go to” person on the tough issues.

“I started working at Oakland County when I applied for a job duringcollege,” says Joe. “When I didn’t get the summer job, I was offered afull time position in the Stationary Store, as the storekeeper. So, I tookthat and finished my schooling after I was in Finance and Purchasing.”Joining a group like MPPOA was invaluable to Joe. “We were fightingto bring respect and professionalism to public purchasing when I firststarted. It was a tremendous forum for sharing ideas, stories andexploring new ideas. I’d like to stay in touch—it’s a great group.”
