Good Morning Positive Ninjas!!!!! If you look at the words ice, bake, and serve. These are all root words. Now look at the y, ed, and ing. These are all vowel suffixes. When we look at what's happening in the first one, we have the word ice and the plus sign is telling us to add vowel suffix y.

If you look at the words ice, bake, and serve. These are all root words.

Now look at the y, ed, and ing. These are all vowel suffixes.

When we look at what's happening in the first one, we have the word ice and the plus sign is telling us to add vowel suffix y.

When we do this the final e was dropped before we added the suffix.

Let's look at some other words:

The root words here are like and safe.

Our suffixes here are consonant suffixes which are ness and ly.

So for our dropping rule today, it says that a silent e on a root word is dropped before adding a vowel suffix. Remember back to out "doubling rule" where we put check marks in the boxes. LOOK BELOW

A root word will get a check mark if it ends with a silent e and a suffix will get a check mark if it is a vowel suffix. When you have two check marks you drop the silent e.

One check mark tells you just to add the suffix without dropping any letters.
