VOLUME V 2013OCEAN

Page 2: Spark | Ocean | Volume 5

Lui Kawasumi spent a significant part of his life in Japan, the Czech Republic, Turkey and the USA. These places gave him an appreciation for different cultures, people and esthetics. And, those experiences were huge influences and crucial to his work. Kawasumi thinks his first inkling towards a creative profession sprung while he was living next door to a Japanese potter in the Czech Republic. He spent much of his weekends in his neighbor’s studio, mostly just playing with the clay, but also observing and attempting to emulate his technique. Although he does not work with clay anymore, he still likes to work directly with materials and processes whenever possible.

Spark Is All About The Energy That Ignites The Creative Process.

Welcome to our Ocean adventure. We invite you to dive in.

It is the journal of raw energy not yet harnessed and an incredibly diverse amalgamation of life not yet explored. It is a celebration not just of the things that intrigue and unnerve us, but of the captivating and mystical process that sets inspirations afloat and allows them to form into breathtaking ideas. In this issue, we explore the spark that draws us in, and has the power to influence our climate and weather. Ocean. In addition to providing joy and relaxation to millions of people every year, the ocean also provides us with the oxygen we breathe, food we eat and inspiration to create custom furniture.

ABOUT THIS ISSUEThe ocean is full of mysteries and makes our planet an interesting and wonderful place to live. It covers approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface and is the source of fairytales and ancient sea legends. It is also home to the majority of Earth’s plants and animals—from tiny living organisms to the majestic blue whale, the planet’s largest living animal. No wonder it inspires us to dream, write and create.

BEACH SAND CABINET Tiny grains of beach sand come from several different sources.

Some sand may be eroded bits of quartz and seashells, while other

sand is created from precious gems. This cabinet is inspired by nature’s

beauty and is reminiscent of beach sand – as the name implies.

What is it about the seashore that completely mesmerizes us,

and compels us to return to it year after year? Is it the smell of the water,

the warm wind against our faces, the feel of the sand between our toes or the gentle roar

of the waves as they come and go? Whatever it is, it’s intoxicating

and calming, all at the same time.

SEA URCHIN STOOL Sea urchins are visually arresting creatures, and in some

cultures—they are enjoyed as culinary delicacies.

With its red leather seat, silver base and black spiny legs,

this stool was inspired by red sea urchins.

Of the 1.5 million known species that live on Earth, approximately 250,000 inhabit the world’s

ocean. And, these creatures run the full spectrum of colors—often in beautiful and intricate

designs and patterns, ingenious camouflage, and varying degrees of transparency.

Like the ever-expanding ripples across water when an object is dropped into it,

ripples often appear on smooth ocean waters when the wind blows.

It’s also a sight to see the sunlight playfully dancing and reflecting

off the ripples on lazy sunny days.

SLICE OF WATER CONSOLE TABLE Mimicking the look and feel of ocean ripples, this

beautiful console table is made from Beechwood.

And the contrast of traditional and modern

makes for an interesting piece.

WHIRLPOOL TABLE Whirlpools are the ocean’s currents that move in a rotating direction,

produced by the rising and falling tides. In northern oceans, the water spins

clockwise. In the southern oceans, it spins counterclockwise. The tubular

chamber of this unique table was clearly inspired by the northern oceans.

Spectacular, and sometimes strange or scary,

natural events occur all around the world’s ocean. And, these natural phenomena—

whether they are whirlpools, tidal waves or ocean foam—are truly unique

and captivating because of their rareness in occurrence.
