Boys Soccer Battles #1 Decatur to OT; Falls 3-2

Decatur High (#1 in AAAAA, #1 in region 6-5A) came into #8 North Springs (1st time being ranked in 20 + years) on 3/15/19 to put their status on the line against the Spartans. The game lived up to its billing.

The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 32:15 when Ryan Kaplin fed Simon Ben-Moshe a pass that Simon slammed past the Bulldog keeper.

Decatur came back at the 16:15 mark when a Bulldog winger got by the defense and had a 1v1 against the NS keeper and made the shot to even the score at 1-1. This score held up till half time.

North Springs came out in the 2nd half on fire as it scored a go-ahead goal with 1 minute 42 seconds on an “on goal” at 38:08. Zach Lyons got credit for the goal with Andrew Wright an assist. This gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

At the 29:59 mark the Bulldog #6 stuck once against down the sideline to burn the Spartan defense as he again even the score at 2-2.

Both teams were giving all they had but neither team could score that deciding goal as regulation time ended 2-2 as both teams headed to a 15 minute OT period.

In the OT Decatur was playing the long ball game which, the Spartan defense had been handling easily. At the midpoint of OT, the Bulldogs played a long ball that just cleared the Spartan defense with Decatur player (#9) on the run collecting the loose ball forcing another 1v1 with Spartan keeper. Decatur came out on top again to take a 3-2 lead and could hold on for an exciting win.

This was the 3rd game in a row with the final score ending as 3-2. One from a OT/PK win, one in a regulation lost, and now a lost in OT.

Boys LAX Handles Norcross 12-6

The Blue Devils from Norcross came into Spartan stadium tonight with stormy skies on the horizon and they went home empty handed. The Spartans played well on both sides of the ball and while the Blue Devils came out early and scored quickly, that first goal would end up being their only lead of the night – North Springs went on to dominate, winning 12-6. Senior Jake Rubin led the Spartans with 4 goals, followed by a hat trick from Freshman JD Kilbourn. Junior Charlie Turner had 2 goals and a goal apiece came from Senior Carlton Colley and Juniors George Christman and Jackson Colley. There were 8 total assists on the night with Colley contributing 4, Rubin 3 and Turner 1. The defense was strong tonight forcing a total of 11 turnovers and dominating the groundball game 36-18. Seniors Tiwan Jones, Jr. and Chandler Jackson anchored the D, with strong contributions from Juniors Nelson Cummiskey and Dylan Mah. A special shout-out goes to Junior Christian Holloman who was all over the field demonstrating great speed and hustle on both offense AND defense. Sophomore Jack Makowski had another big night in goal adding 8 saves to bring his season total to 67 in just 7 games. Senior Captain Charley Plumly went 13 for 19 on face-offs tonight and had an impressive 10 ground balls and Freshman JD Roseberry went 1-3. Come out and support the team this week as they are currently 5-2 overall and outscoring opponents 85-59 on the season! They take on Bremen on 3/18 and Decatur next week on 3/27. Matches will start at 5:55pm.
