Eighth grade enjoys rafting at Black Mountain By Chandler Gray For one last field trip before high school, the eighth graders went white water rafting in Black Mountain, NC. The trip started on a rainy day but the sun decided to come out on the long drive to the mountains. We stayed at Christmount Christian Retreat and were thankful that they offered rooms with heat since it was so cold outside. Saturday was the day for rafting down the French Broad River. We had a crazy tour guide, Wags who kept us safe and excited about the trip. White water rafting was really fun and exciting. “I loved the white water rafting, it was so much fun going over the rapids,” Esther Odeke said. “White water rafting was the best part of the trip because it was the first for me and was a big adrenaline rush, ”Gracie Ziegelmann said. After the class returned from rafting, Jason Dulworth and Coleen Buckingham took some students hiking. “I loved hiking up the mountain because of the great view and it made me feel accomplished,” Allison Chiancone said. Even though it took a lot of energy to get up the mountain, it was worth it because of the beautiful view from the top. At night special fellowship time was held with encouraging words from the parents and teachers in preparation for high school. It was filled with praise, worship and lots of emotional moments. “I have really enjoyed hearing what everyone had to say,” Mady Burrell said. Stories from the parents and previous students that have moved on to high school and college were interesting. The night was complete with s’mores and games. “I loved hanging out with my class or should I say family,” Gracie Ziegelmann said.

By Lily Johnson “Oh my gosh!” said eighth-grader Trent Barton when he first entered parent Peter Caldwell’s huge warehouse full of cars. Father of second-grader, Mersina, Mr. Caldwell has inherited a lot of spectacular vehicles from his father-in-law, John Winslow. He keeps them in a huge warehouse and works on them, not just for a living, but also for fun. He has about 13-14 vehicles, seven of which are huge army trucks, and he also has four motorcycles. Also, just for kicks, Caldwell rides through the carpool line in any of his vehicles and picks up his daughter, Mersina. One day he drove through the carpool line in a huge 1991 BMY five-ton army truck. It was quite a scene as Mersina, a little blonde second-grader, climbed into the huge truck and smiled. Eighth-grader Kaylie Shoemaker witnessed Caldwell’s grand entrance in carpool. She said, “It was fun to see a different vehicle in the line. I wish my dad would pick me up in a car like that.” Caldwell’s favorite car is his 1969 Dodge Dart, and when he starts it, you can’t even hear yourself think. This car must be a common favorite, because when Mersina was asked which car was her preference, she said, “The loud one,” and pointed to the Dodge. A common theme in Caldwell’s garage is the color orange. A 1972 orange Corvette Stingray, which was bought brand-new by his grandfather, Richard Kearns, is a prized possession of his. Caldwell doesn’t just collect old cars. He also owns a 2012 fully-loaded Dodge Challenger, of course, in the color orange. What does Mr. Caldwell plan to do with his cars, you might ask? He has considered putting a few of them in car shows, but ultimately, he wants to pass his cars and boats down to his daughter and her two brothers, John and James, ages four and one, to carry on the family car tradition. For now, though, he just plans to enjoy them and says, “Cars and boats, they’re my two favorite things.”

Q. What kind of changes are you planning to make? A. I’m not looking to make so many big changes, but to make sure that what we are doing, we are doing well and for the right reasons. I’m a big picture kind of guy, and the big picture always centers around Jesus and His will for our lives. I know He has a specific will and plan for each individual here and Christ Covenant, and I look forward to seeing all those individual roles come together into a unified group. Q. What is one thing you want your future students to know about you? A. I love unity. Unity of the Body of Christ, a unified team, a unified vision. The Bible says in Genesis 11 that when the people came together, nothing would be impossible for them to achieve. I believe by seeing a unified staff and student body, we will be able to achieve all God has in plan for us. Q. What is your favorite Disney movie? A. Assuming Joseph: King of Dreams does not count, and Spirit is a Dreamworks movie, then I would have to go with The Lion King. The first one, not 1½ or 2.

By Ashley Martin Barbeque, trophies, and teammates. These things make up the excitement of the Christ Covenant School Sports Banquet. From fifth grade to ninth grade, students and families poured into the cafeteria on May 20th, ready to eat some good ol’ Parker’s Barbeque. “My favorite part of the sports banquet was just hanging out with people and remembering what we did during the sports season,”

eighth grader Jacob Schmidt said. For some students, the dinner is the best part. After finishing the delicious meal, everyone was ushered into the assembly room for the award ceremony. Medals and trophies were being handed out left and right. Coaches spoke, students laughed, parents cheered. Sports Banquet is the highlight of the year for many students. A night of celebrating athletic success, great food, and reminiscing about the season.

Gray team wins Field Day

Upper school math teacher Coleen Buckingham was as active as anyone on the gray team. “She was really happy when we won,” eighth grade team captain Bethany Lee said.

“Everyone was saying that Green and Orange had won, and when we did we were all really surprised. Whenever [first grader] Bergan [Osborne] said we wouldn’t win, I tickled her. All the little kids had a ton of first places, so that’s probably why we won,” captain Bethany Lee said.

By Ashley Martin Teachers rapping, people dancing like crazy, and hanging out with friends. Where could you have found all that? At the dance at Ironwood Country Club. It was filled with great food, amazing music, and some sharp looking eighth and ninth grade students. Many students enjoyed watching Jason Dulworth rap “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. “My favorite part was dancing like an idiot because I can’t dance,” eighth grader Bethany Lee said. Another fun part was seeing what everyone wore. “Lachlan dressed very interestingly,” ninth grader Sivana Holler said. “Obviously I was the best dressed girl,” Hannah Morgan said. And of course there were a few slow dances! “I slow danced with Alex Peralta, Bethany Lee, and Hazel Smartnick,” eighth graderLachlan James said. Our school’s first dance could not have happened without student life director Will Chancellor, history teacher Allen Guidry and assistant head of school Tessie Guidry, the parents who decorated, and the Prefect Council. The students are definitely ready for another one!

By Hazel Smartnick & Lily Johnson The Social. A night full of games, pizza, and laughter. Where teams persevered and sixth grade girls beat seventh grade boys. Also the laughter of minions was heard throughout the Covenant Student Ministries building. The whole night was pretty intense. Teams fought strong, students laughed hard, and lots of candy was awarded. Students brought friends and these friends got to see the crazy side to Christ Covenant. Sports were played and teams dominated. Dodgeballs were thrown and hit many people in the face. Overall it was an amazing night. “The best part of the night was when Emily blocked Grant. We all cheered really loud,” seventh grader Ben Bradsher said. “I enjoyed beating three guys in air hockey,” sixth grader Morgan Ayscue. Said. The girls did amazing at the social, but the guys also played hard. The winning basketball team was seventh graders Grant Brodeur, Garris Manning, and their friend Revon Whitehurst. The group had a great time playing games, and hanging out with friends. This will be a night that they will never forget.

By Mady Burrell Ratings, resemblance, and relevance are some of the most key terms when making a book into a movie. Divergent came out in March, based off of the world wide best seller book. For rating reasons, the movie didn’t contain some of the more violent scenes from the book. Though they weren’t of complete importance, I felt that it took away from the movie even though the sacrifice was necessary to reach a larger audience. For the totally climatic points that they felt couldn’t be shown, they merely briefly mentioned them. There were characters left

out who basically made up crucial moments in both Divergent, and its sequels. It’s not just these structural moments that they didn’t include that are bothering me. They also completely changed scenes. Certain characters were introduced too early in place of others who weren’t shown (Like really? You kick other characters out yet it’s totally okay to bring these plot twists in like this?), Characters died in the wrong way, while others weren’t injured correctly. They all lead up to my biggest complaint. They changed details about the faction system. In the books, the

faction system is a main part of the structure. In the book, Veronica Roth states things that seemed to crumble in the book. At one point Roth states that looking in the mirror is considered vain (book), yet we see Tris (the main character) stealing glances at herself in a spoon (movie). It’s like scenes were added that were plot changing while others were taken out and there was not even a second thought. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the movie, as a moviegoer, I loved it! But having read the book, I picked up on a ton of things that made me feel like I wasn’t watching the Divergent I read.

By Lachlan James Every morning my parents wake me up at 7:00 a.m. I always stay in bed trying to fall back asleep until they come back into my room at 7:20 a.m. After I wake up I have to run around half asleep trying to get ready for school. When I arrive at school, I have to go to math first period, I literally cannot focus at all because I am half asleep. Can anyone relate? Schools all across the USA have moved their school hours up

one hour. Instead of starting at 8:00 and ending at 3:00, the schools have started at 9:00 and ended at 4:00. It is scientifically proven that starting an hour later improves the overall productivity of students. Teenagers in our society tend to stay up later in the night. As a product of staying up late, teenagers do not get the sufficient sleep they need to focus in school. Spending one extra hour in bed in the morning has many great affects.

The grades of kids who are in schools that have made this change have greatly improved. The overall moods of these kids have also improved. Kids who have a “boring” class during first period tend to not focus as much and fall asleep during class. So, do you think Christ Covenant school should start at 9:00 instead of 8:00?

Schools should wake up to teens’ needs

By Kaylie Shoemaker The Spartan Games were and adventure, between teacher Jason Dulworth dancing “Gagnam Style” to Charlton Mandizha chasing a volleyball through the lake. “My favorite part was when we played the song game and the relay,” sixth grader Jackson Collie, House of Paul, said. House of Moses won Spartan Games and got closer to winning the house competition. “I was super excited when I heard we won Spartan games,” eighth grader Ashley Martin, House of Moses said. Between the games and scavenger hunts, Spartan games turned out to be an amazing experience for the different houses.

By Olivia Warren Since the beginning of time, facial hair has been a part of life for men all over the world, & the purposes have varied in countless ways. For some, it’s cultural, or practical, or just cool. Facial hair, beards in particular, seems to be the “thing” in many families. Some middle school boys made hilarious faces as they considered the question. Others were angry at being bothered. Approximately 69% of the upper school guys say that they don’t think that they want facial hair, but about 31% say they would like facial hair, beards in

particular. Several of the teachers have beards, & it seems to be a funny aspect of Logic class with Mr. Jason Dulworth. For his wife’s birthday, physical education teacher Mr. Will Chancellor came to school without a beard. Latin teacher Mr. Buck Holler has a cool moustache board on the wall in his classroom, as well as a unicorn horn on that same wall. He also has an awesome moustache that has always been a source of laughter for Latin students. And so the question remains; to beard or not to beard? What is your answer?
