Spatial Asset Management at Cobb County Water System
Introduction to Cobb County Water
• System Architecture– Feature Datasets
– Networks
– Editing/Versioning
Annually, the Water System Delivers approx. 24 Billion Gallons of water to 150,000+ customers in Unincorporated
Cobb County.
Approx. 73 Million Gallons of wastewater is processed at one of the 4 WasteWater Treatment
Facilities daily.
The Water System GIS team is responsible for maintaining a spatial database consisting of:

Silverlight Web Maps
• Arc10 Server
• For use by County Maintenance personnel
• Used by mobile workforce to identify assets and work in the field
• Very useful for identifying buried assets
Upgrade Project to Maximo Spatial
• ArcGIS 10 and Maximo 7.5• Used for Asset Management Water Systems
– Water, Sewer and Storm Water
• Maximo serves as a transactional and historical repository
• Maximo manages corrective and preventive maintenance work orders
• GIS serves as the As‐Built state of the Networks
Sharing of Data Between Systems
• The Spatial integration allows each system to maintain its data but share with the other.
• Data can be entered and exchanged from one system and viewed in the other.
• No synchronization of data for maximum accuracy.
• Work processes can be streamlined using the tools provided.
• Flexibility for users to work in the system they are most comfortable with.
Business Risk Exposure (BRE)
• A County wide initiative to standardize a grading system to better enhance asset management.
• BRE will provide a scale to determine the ramifications of asset failure.
• The trend data collected from the program will help prevent future asset failure.
• Prevents extremely costly repairs and negative environmental impact.
• Repairs can be proactive instead of reactive.
• Condition Assessment – the physical condition of an asset• Mitigation Factor – percentage value assigned to an asset
which determines • Likelihood of Failure –Probability or expected frequency of
a negative impact occurring.• Consequence of Failure – a negative impact on the
established or required level of service
Expose Maximo Data to ArcGIS
• Expands available data sources related to assets in the network.
• Increasing the number of analysis options.
• Provides historical data for trend analysis.
• Allows for more intuitive symbology related to status and condition.
• Provides field personnel with visual condition of the current network.
