Die Mastaba des Uhemka. Ein Grab in der JVuste. By HA NS AYSER. eitschrift des Museum s zu Hildesheim.Neue Folge, Heft 15. Hannover, 1964. Pp. 80, pls. 24, line drawings 4. Price not stated.

The Pelizaeus-Museum in Hildesheim is fortunate enough to possess an Old-Kingdom mastaba fromGiza, a fru it of th e excavations largely su ppor ted by Wilhelm Pelizaeus an d con ducted initially by Stein-dorff and later with such brilliant success by Junker.

Th is particular mastaba was discovered in 1906, bu t owing to the 1914 war did no t reach Hildesheimuntil 1925. Here it was erected, dismantled because of the 1939 war, again erected in 1948 and yet againdismantled for transference to the new m useum which had been built. Its erection there was delayed becauseof the necessity to carry o ut work to stop deterioration of the ston e, so that it was only in 1964 th at it wasagain on view.

The actual mastaba was12 x 6 m. in d imensions, but in the museum i t i s only the cul t-chamber ( 2 . 3 0 ~1 - 2 0 m.), which alone is decorated, that is on display. Incidentally it is stated that London is among theplaces in Europ e that has such a chamber, b ut this is unhappily no longer true.

T h e present book is a guide for the visitor to this monum ent. I t begins with a general account of th econtext in which suchmastabas were built and what purpose they were supposed t o serve, continues with astat em ent of what little is known of Uhemka himself, and the n goes on to a detailed description o f th e cult-room itself. Each of the four walls is the subject of a complete line drawing accompanied by a full descrip-tion.

After the general account of mastabas and them articular description of this one, an amount of spacecom prising nearly half the whole text of the book is devoted to setting ou t each hieroglyphic legend or passageindividually and accompanied by a translation. The use of this to the lay reader is dubious, firstly becausethe texts are, one or two small restorations apart, already fully printed in the line drawings with th e exceptionof the f a ~ a d e , nd secondly because it would be q uite impossible for a non-Egyptologist to correlate thetext with the translation. Incidentally these texts and translations are not entirely without small errors andinconsistencies. I have noticed:

    p. 45, 1st text. Tran slation ofr& niswt is omitted.p. 49, 3rd text. Translation ofmitrt is omitted.p. 50, 5th text.-- is represented byz, in p. 60, 6th text, bytsch, in p. 66, 4th text, byt.p. 52, 5th text. No t Niwosret bu t Njsutwosret as in p. 60, 2nd text.p. 54, 2nd text. Not Neferzes but Noferzes as in p. 50, 5th text.p. 61, 1st text. Kahe rsetef no t Kachersetef.p. 68, and text. Surely Nenofer not Nofer.p. 69, line 3. Surely a garment not a sack.p. 76, 5th text. Mertitfes not Alertites.p. 77, 5th text.-no t o .

Th is section ends with a note on U hemka and his family including their titles and showing how the informa-tion available stretches through five generations: grandparents, parents, Uhemka himself, his children andgrandchildren.

T h e book concludes with a set of twenty-four plates of good quality and apposite to th e subject. Onlyeight of these, however, are detailed illustrations of the ma stabain question. T hi s is a pity, for it would surelyhave been both instructive and interesting for the visitor to the m useum to have been provided with a fullpictorial record of what he had seen. C. H. S. SPAULL
