E’sNOTE
The 2nd quarter of the year is always a busy time for Milan as it gears up for the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile otherwise known as the Milano Fair. This year’s fair definitely did not disappoint and proved to be nothing short of spectacular. To celebrate its 50th year anniversary, furniture makers from all over the globe showcased their newest most inspired designs. In this issue, we unveil the top designs from the various leading brands in furniture and home design.
For our featured designer we have none other than the world renowned, Philippe Starck, who has done such remarkable work with brands like Kartell and Parrot. Starck is the man behind iconic pieces from Kartell such as the Louis Ghost chair and the Masters chair, to name a few. Now he has very recently collaborated with rock icon Lenny Kravitz, a designer himself, to reinvent the Mademoiselle chair. The series was launched at the Milano Fair which created an enormous buzz that attracted thousands of Kravitz, as well as Starck, fans. In my opinion, this has to be one of the biggest collaborations between two icons. Design and music have always complemented each other, Starck and Kravitz are the evidence of this.
This issue also features Starck’s collaboration with Parrot, one of the leading brands in music technology. Starck designed the ever so sleek Zikmu Speakers with a 360-degree surround sound. His later creation, the Zik wireless headphones was also recently launched and it will soon make its debut in the Philippines.
The Milano Fair has paved the way for our many brands like Busnelli, Living Divani, Tisettanta, Catellan, Verzelloni and many more to showcase their new pieces. My personal favorite would have to be Busnelli’s Blumun sofa in leather by Christophe Pillet. With its sleek lines and the illusion of it floating off the ground, it is truly a work of art. Another design that caught my eye was the Kiru by Giopato and Coombes, two of the emerging talents behind Living Divani. They drew inspiration from the traditional Japanese Kimono which is evident in how the fabric was folded at the back. In addition to that, a brand that also made waves at the fair was Gan for its innovative and modern approach on the rug. Using Nowood, which composes of natural and plastic fibers, Gan created a new collection that is awe-inspiring and can complement any living space with its bright colors and beautiful patterns.
To end this note, given the Kartell hype from the Milano Fair, I would like to proudly announce in behalf of Spazio that we have recently signed a distributor partnership with the leading brand, and it is with great honor that we will be opening the first-ever Kartell flagship store in Manila very soon! We are truly excited for this and for the many other good things that are to happen within the next few months. So just a little word of advice, don’t blink and stay tuned! Cheers!

Philippe Starck is undoubtedly the world’s most revered living designer. For four decades, he has liberally spread his creativity and ideas across the design landscape, putting his mark on everything from toothbrushes, motorbikes, sanitary ware, restaurants and even the presidential Elysee Palace. One of the originators of the boutique hotel interior, and currently putting finishing touches to the ultra-grand Royal Monceau Hotel in Paris,
A man thatneeds no
introduction.
“I like to open the doors to people’s brains”
Philippe’s influence on the way we live now is everywhere – in our uses of colour, materials and space, and in our desire for good design at every juncture. The pinnacle of Starck’s career is the iconic Louis Ghost chair for Kartell, since its launch over a million pieces have been sold. One of his latest creations for Kartell, awarded with the 2010 Good Design Award, is aptly called the Masters chair. Philippe Starck pays homage to three great masters in contemporary design by patterning the Masters chair to their three great masterpieces. Reinterpreted in a space age key, the

three designs interweave their unmistakable silhouettes into a sinuous hybrid giving life to a fusion of engaging styles: a new product, a new project and a reflection of our new society.Starck has also created elements for the Zikmu wireless speakers for Parrot which was awarded the Global Bluetooth SIG “Best of CES” in 2009. Inventive and surprising, it’s stunning and ultra-modern sculpted shape incorporates advanced technology that delivers powerful sound with spectacular clarity. Coming into the scene is his newest design for Parrot unveiled at the CES 2012 , the Zik wireless headphones. The Zik is one of the most clever implementations of
wireless technology we’ve seen in headphones to date.
Inventor, creator, architect, designer, artistic director, Philippe Starck is definitely all of the above. His passion and dedication to art and design has become a part of our daily lives by creating unconventional objects whose purpose is to be good before being beautiful..

IN THESPOTLIGHT
Among the many highly anticipated product launches, pop ups and parties at Salone del Mobile in Milan is the iconic Italian furniture company, Kartell. This year, Kartell presented a new series of Philippe Starck’s Mademoiselle chair as re-designed by none other than famous rock star, Lenny Kravitz. Although known for his music, Kravitz has expanded his scope and founded his own studio called Kravitz Designs in 2003. He has been involved in multiple high-end hotel projects, in collaboration with Swarovski and has now collaborated with famed design personality and friend, Philippe Starck, to create an exclusive collection of six reinterpreted Mademoiselle chairs.Kravitz upholstered Starck’s design with a combination of fabrics of varying textures, from exotic textiles of fur, leather, python and woven materials. These fabrics have come together to create a visual and tactile experience that serves as a reflection of the soul of both artists.
“An environment is made of materiality; wood, stone, metal… but also made of immateriality such as light, temperature, sounds, music... Lenny proved at the highest level he could create an entire musical universe. It is now time for him to translate the magic of his music into
materiality; into chairs, into lamps…”
“Philippe Starck has been wonderfully supportive of my design endeavors, so when he asked me if I would interpret his ‘Mademoiselle chair’ for Kartell, I was excited about the ide of two icons collaborating in this way”

Busnelli
Identifying a design classic is a largely subjective business. Although a few criterias like longevity and innovation speaks loudly of the new collection presented by Busnelli, which this year continued all its projects without researching extreme minimalism, but a morbid and delicate style, that harmonizes with every environment. New pieces included were designed by Patrick Jouin, Christophe Pillet, Marco Boga, Kicco Bestetti, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Enrico Cesana and finally Umberto Asnago.
Living Divani
Living Divani’s selection of fresh pieces this year from Piero Lissoni, Victor Vasilev, Francesco Rota and Nathan Yong, alongside new and emerging talents such as Studio Juju, Mario Ferrarini and Giopato&Coombs were enclosed in a mesh of grey-painted sheet metal conveyed a sense of lightness in a cocoon-like environment.
Kartell “Work in Project”
How we love their full on Las Vegas lighted booth last year at the Salone’s 50th. But this year, architect and artistic director Ferrucio Laviani created a “no frills” conceptual booth to further display the brand’s multifaceted identity.“The 2012 booth is the celebration of the new Kartell projects and the ways in which the brand develops innovative ideas in the world of furnishings thanks to the new technologies”
Cattelan Italia
Part of the appeal of this brand is its attention to comfort, details, design and materials innovation. No wonder a record of visitors had browsed through its fifty-two new products comprised of conceptual chairs, wooden top tables with irregular and natural edges, desks, sideboards, coffee tables and a new textile line.
112SPAZIO20

Frag
The booth’s design evolved from the inspiration brought by the well-
defined edges and precise angles of thick leather, a raw material
in Frag creations according to Ferruccio Laviani. The perimeter is punctuated with tall structures – simple rectangular elements that evoke rationalist architecture and create ‘windows’ and plays
of perspective, thereby maximizing the volumes with
just a few materials.

Verzelloni
Though scarce in new items this year, Verzolloni nonetheless made a presence to a large audience by introducing an overstitching technique - the new special seam “saddle stitch”, embellishing the Zoe collection, and the new collection of leathers & fabrics that have enjoyed great consensus of the public.
Gan Rug / Gandia Blasco
The Gan Rug and Gandia Blasco have once more produced beautiful modern and contemporary collection. Known for its ecofriendly ways, the outdoor furniture brand used a 100 percent recyclable material called NOWOOD, which mixes natural and plastic fibers for its new collection. At the same time, the rug company’s handcrafted rug with a pixel like design was adored very much by the public.

Kenkoon
This Thai outdoor furniture brand is no amatuer in the global design fair. Believing that the best design is the one faithful to one’s identity, the new Self collection comes in a wide palette of materials, textures, which can be mixed and match to anyone’s liking. With this philosophy, Kenkoon creates the perfect outdoor life letting nature flow into your space.
Visionnaire
Divertissement and romance: this is the key to enter the dreamy visions of the interior projects by Visionnaire. One of the participating designers, Alessandro La Spada, pays homage to King Louis XVI with a romantic piece of luxurious dressing tables, mirror and pedestal stool. With Samuelle Mazza, divertissement plays a big role to the Bismarck family of upholstered furniture.
Baxter
Designing for the extreme high end luxury market demands one brilliant talent with a very specific skill. In the furniture design industry, Baxter is recognized for its craftsmanship, which is why it’s perfect that they chose Paola Navone, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez and Draga & Aurel to collaborate with who successfully created a collection fit for the brand’s image.
Bonaldo
Producing rigorous simplicity with complex ideas might seem to be perplexing. But that’s how the brand Bonaldo narrates the research and production of its new collection. All of this suggests a representation of complexity which finds its synthesis in a new simplicity, holding itself, in a balanced and creative way, the many different aspects of these days.

Arketipo
Arketipo’s many charms were put on display with two new sofas - Inkas and Malta. The first one have an irregular design, which effect is an interlocking pattern of soft and geometric shapes that convey a sense of rhythm and vivaciousness. The latter inspired by the classic taste of Anglo-saxon in a contemporary manner is supported by retro styled feet, along with comfortable and welcoming seat cushions.
Emeco
As furniture design ever more considered and technologically advanced, the introduction of an entirely new material composite come to be a big deal. Even with just one chair launched this year, they partnered with none less than Philippe Starck. Producing the Broom chair with a three-fold environmental impact - less energy, less waste and less carbon.
Emu
The spirit of placing technological development at the top of its priority
is EMU’s goal. Fulfilled with the new MIA collection, the whole concept
stems from the RBC Design Centre in Montpellier, where three important elements were brought together: design, production and distribution.

Kin Pendant Light Installation for Oluce
Francesco Rota curated the Oluce installation this year with the Kin Pendant Light in the Brera district. Suspended from the blackened ceiling, the Kin pendants lights, in 2 sizes and different shiny coats; deep red, silver, bronze, white and blacked steel , shone and hovered in space like coloured stars or UFOs, creating a sky of lights. Wellness Rooms by Visionnaire
As expected, the Salone del Bagno 2012 attracted more visitors and companies this year. For example, with the idea “Visionary eclectism” - the fil rouge of the bathroom proposals made by Visionnaire. The new wellness room Phuket by Stefano Pirovano, like a spaceship, brings the audience into the future. While Simone Micheli proposed a conceptual wellness room, Forma Mentis, mainly designed for a male audience, it captures us with its richness and its cool imperial attitude.

TECHNOLOGY TODAY
True to Life Sound
THERE ARE SEVERAL REASONS BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES HAVEN'T TAKEN OFF SUCH AS LOUSY DESIGNS, POOR EXECUTION AND THAT UNHANDY PAIRING BUT THE ZIK, A NEW HEADSET THAT PARROT UNVEILED AT THE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW 2012, APPEARS TO ADDRESS PRETTY MUCH ALL OF THEM.

TECHNOLOGY TODAYFor starters, the Zik has serious design cred behind it. It’s another baby of
designer Philippe Starck, who also collaborated with Parrot on speakers, and
he seems to have struck gold here. The Zik’s earcups completely enclose
the ear, a style made popular again by Beats Audio, but the headset is
comfortable to wear and has an elegant look.
In a headphone industry, the Parrot Zik comes with integrated
NFC (near field technology) communication. The key advantage
here is that you can pair up the headphones with a compatible
NFC and Bluetooth-touting device simply by tapping them
together. You no longer have to deal with “discovering”
new devices and entering passcodes.
The Zik’s sleek look is partly due to the unusual fact
that it has no buttons for volume or jumping tracks. The
feature that makes the biggest immediate impression is the
touch-sensitive panel covering the entire outer surface of
the right earcup. You can control the headphones using
touch gestures: swipe a finger up and down to adjust
the volume, or swipe from side-to-side to go back and
forth between songs. A tap pauses the music, another
starts it back up again. A tap is also used to answer an
incoming call or to hang up. Or you can simply just take
off the headset and it knows to stop the music until
you put it back on — very smart.
But there’s even more technology in there. Parrot has
also shoved in five microphones to aid in the active noise
cancellation, which they say is effective in eliminating
up to 25dB of ambient noise. As far as the 40mm neodynium
drivers themselves, you get a rating of 32 ohms, a
frequency range of 10Hz to 25kHz, and a sound
pressure level of 110dB per volt at 1kHz.
The 800mAh battery is good for 6
hours of full featured use
and up to 24 hours in
standby.
