Alexis Morgan, Consultant, Canadian Index of Wellbeing (Waterloo, ON, Canada)

Alexis Morgan is a consultant who solves business and biodiversity challenges. His latest project is helping WWF and the Alliance for Water Stewardship to develop a global water stewardship standard. His background covers sustainability indicators, planning and environmental economics and he has degrees in geography (BA, MSc) and business (MBA).

Andrew Robinson, Senior Socio-economic Scientist, Rescan Environmental Services Ltd. (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Andrew Robinson works as an environmental consultant and advises both business and government on engagement strategies as well as policies and practice to advance social sustainability. He worked internationally with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Environment Programme on issues linked to livelihood development, natural resource management, and multilateral environmental agreements while also pursuing documentary filmmaking.

Ann Rowan, Manager, Sustainability Strategist, Metro Vancouver (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Ann Rowan works at Metro Vancouver as Acting Manager of Sustainability Policy and Research which marks one more stop in a journey combining an interest in environmental issues, academic work in economics and a commitment to social change. Her two children are excellent at asking probing questions about values and lifestyles.

Annie Leonard, Founder, The Story of Stuff (Berkeley, CA, USA)

Annie Leonard’s Story of Stuff Project uses popular education, new media and community engagement to inspire people to join the movement for sustainable and just systems of production and consumption. Previously, she worked for Greenpeace, Ralph Nader and others on environmental health and justice issues in the US and internationally.



Bard Suen, Director, RangiChangi Roots / Alternative Food Movement (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Bard Suen is a senior Honours Sociology student at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is conducting research that looks at the ways in which Vancouver's Chinese "modernist" restaurants are re-branding and re-envisioning Chinese cuisine through "alternative food" sensibilities. Bard is also a Director at RangiChangi Roots Society--local non-profit dedicated to engaging diverse cultural groups in the environmental movement.

Betsy Taylor, Breakthrough Strategies & Solutions (Takoma Park, MD, USA)

Betsy Taylor is a consultant who focuses on catalytic

initiatives to address climate change and promote a

sustainable culture and economy. She was President of the

Center for a New American Dream, President of 1Sky, and

executive director of the Ottinger Foundation, Stern Family

Fund, and Merck Family Fund. She wrote What Kids Want

that Money Can’t Buy and co-edited Sustainable Planet:

Solutions for the 21st Century.

Bev Thorpe, Co-Director, Clean Production Action (Toronto, ON, Canada)

Beverley Thorpe is Co-Director of Clean Production Action, an organization that advances safer chemicals, and sustainable materials through collaboration with leaders in global supply chains. She promotes green chemistry and extended producer responsibility as essential drivers for a closed loop and healthy economy.

Christopher Barrington-Leigh, Assistant Professor, McGill University (Montréal, QC, Canada)

Chris Barrington-Leigh is an Assistant Professor at McGill University, jointly appointed at the Institute for Health and Social Policy and the School of Environment, and is an associate member in McGill's Department of Economics. His research makes use of subjective well-being reports to address the relative importance of social and community-oriented aspects of life along with material consumption. Chris is a Junior Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.



Dagmar Timmer, Manager, One Earth (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Dagmar Timmer works with One Earth (a non-profit focused on transforming the materials economy) and co-hosts “The Sustainable Region” TV show with her sister Vanessa. Dagmar is passionate about building sustainability leadership, through convening, policy, research and practice. For nearly a decade, she managed global networks of policy-research-practice on forest management and conservation, based in Switzerland and Kenya.

Daniel Brody, Graduate Student Fellow, Environmental Protection Agency (Region 10) (Seattle, WA, USA)

Daniel Brody is a graduate student fellow working in the U.S. EPA Region10 Seattle office. At EPA, Daniel works to support a collaboration of state and local governments called the West Coast Climate and Materials Management Forum. The Forum identifies opportunities to reduce the life-cycle environmental impacts of materials.

David Allaway, Senior Policy Analyst, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (Portland, Oregon, USA)

David Allaway is a senior policy analyst at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, where he coordinates DEQ’s Waste Prevention Strategy and works on a variety of projects to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of products and materials.

David Levine, American Sustainable Business Council (Washington DC, USA)

Denise Taschereau: Denise is the CEO and Co-Founder of Fairware, a Vancouver based company specializing in custom branded sustainable merchandise. Fairware’s clients include leading sustainable brands and organizations such as AVEDA, Patagonia, Vancity and Stonyfield Farms. Her company specializes in ethically sourced products using environmentally preferred materials.

Eleni Sotos, Director, Funders Workgroup for Sustainable Production and Consumption (Berkeley, CA, USA)

Eleni Sotos is the director of the Funders Workgroup for Sustainable Production and Consumption (the Sustainability Funders), a funder affinity group focused on engendering a truly sustainable and just culture and economy by addressing the hidden social, environmental and health costs of production, consumption, and the flow of material goods through our society. She has previously worked at the Health and Environmental Funders Network, the Collaborative on Health and the Environment, the Jenifer Altman Foundation and the Tides Foundation.

Emmanuel Prinet, Executive Director, One Earth (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Emmanuel Prinet is Executive Director of One Earth, a Vancouver-based not-for-profit. He holds an MSc in planning from the University of British Columbia. He has spent seven years living in France to work on sustainable production & consumption and production issues, and has been extensively involved in the UN Commission for Sustainable Development over the last 12 years.



Erik Assadourian, Senior Fellow, Worldwatch Institute (Washington, DC, USA)

Erik Assadourian is a Senior Fellow at Worldwatch Institute. He is currently co-directing State of the World 2012: Moving Toward Sustainable Prosperity, and continues to direct the Transforming Cultures Project (www.transformingcultures.org). In 2011, he developed Catan: Oil Springs, an eco-educational scenario for the popular board game, Settlers of Catan.

Esther Speck, Director of Sustainability, Mountain Equipment Co-operative (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Esther leads MEC’s sustainable business strategy to create business value and maximize MEC’s impact in doing less harm and more good, internally and externally. Previous to 5 years at MEC, she had her own consultancy and worked with organizations such as Fairmont Hotels, Whistler, and Vancity, on strategy and change implementation. Esther has an MBA and a Masters of Resource and Environmental Management from Simon Fraser University.

Garth Yule, Vancity Community Foundation (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Garth joined VCF in 2011 to apply his skills in social issues communication and strategic management to Demonstrating Value and other social impact evaluation programs. He has ten years’ experience in non-profit communications, planning and governance support, and running a graphic design business. Garth holds an MBA (UBC) and a BA Communication (SFU).

Halina Brown, Professor, Clark University (Worcester, MA, USA)

Halina Szejnwald Brown is Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at Clark University. Her research focuses on socio-technical transitions; sustainability policy; and sustainable consumption; with a focus on housing and transportation. Brown is a co-founder of SCORAI, a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science and Fellow of the Society for Risk Analysis.



Jack Luskin, Senior Associate Director, University of Massachusetts (Lowell, MA, USA)

Jack Luskin, Toxics Use Reduction Institute Senior Associate Director (emeritus), has focused for the past 20 + years on sustainable consumption and production. He advised and worked with the UN National Cleaner Production Center program. As director of the UMass Lowell Program for the Practice of Sustainability, Jack co-founded the North American Sustainable Consumption Alliance.

Jacqueline Koerner, Ecotrust Canada (Vancouver, Canada)

Ms. Koerner is the founding and Past Chair of Ecotrust Canada, a Vancouver-based enterprising non-profit working at the intersection of conservation and community economic development. She also served on the board of Ecotrust (Portland, OR) as a Director and Vice-Chair, 1994-2005. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD at UBC in the Department of Geography.

James Goldstein, Senior Fellow, Tellus Institute (Boston, MA, USA)

James Goldstein is a Senior Fellow at Tellus Institute where he directs the Sustainable Communities Program. His research centers on the development of analytic methods and stakeholder processes in support of community-based initiatives to integrate environmental protection, economic development, and social well-being. Areas of expertise include waste reduction, integrated water resource planning, waste reduction, and regional scenario analysis.

James Meadowcroft, Professor, Carleton University (Ottawa, ON, Canada)

James Meadowcroft holds a Canada Research Chair in Governance for Sustainable Development and is a Professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration, and in the Department of Political Science, at Carleton University. His research focuses on reforms to structures and processes of governance to promote the transition towards sustainability.



Jane Lister, Postdoctoral Fellow, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Jane Lister is a postdoctoral fellow at the Liu Institute for Global Issues. Her research focuses on corporate sustainability with a particular interest in global supply chain responsibility and new modes of co-regulatory environmental governance.

Jeffrey Barber, Executive Director, Integrative Strategies Forum (Silver Spring, MD, USA)

Currently, Mr. Barber works with a number of civil society networks and coalitions, including as Co-Chair of the Northern Alliance for Sustainability (ANPED) and as Northern Co-Chair of the NGO Caucus on Sustainable Production and Consumption at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. Mr. Barber is one of the founders of the recently formed Sustainable Development Issues Network (SDIN) for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Jennie Curtis, Executive Director, The Garfield Foundation (New Bedford, MA, USA)

Jennie Curtis is the originating executive director of the Garfield Foundation. Before joining the Garfield Foundation, Jennie managed a donor advised fund at the Marion Foundation. Prior to that, Jennie spent ten years managing humanitarian refugee relief programs for International Rescue Committee in Pakistan, Thailand, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. From 1985-1987 she served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand.

Jennie Moore, Director, BC Institute of Technology (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Jennie Moore is Director, Sustainable Development and Environmental Stewardship at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Previously, she was Strategic Initiatives Division Manager for the Greater Vancouver Regional District where she played a key role in advancing a range of sustainability initiatives in Vancouver. Jennie is a Leadership in Energy and Environment Design Accredited Professional. She has a Masters of Arts from SCARP and is now undertaking a PhD focusing on the concept of One Planet Cities.



John de Graaf, Executive Director, Take Back Your Time (Seattle, WA, USA)

John de Graaf is the Executive Director of Take Back Your Time and co-founder and senior advisor to The Happiness Initiative. He is the co-author of AFFLUENZA and WHAT’S THE ECONOMY FOR, ANYWAY? and the editor of TAKE BACK YOUR TIME. A documentary filmmaker, he lives in Seattle.

John Helliwell, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

John F. Helliwell is Arthur J.E. Child Foundation Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and co-director of CIFAR’s program on ‘Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being’. He is also Professor Emeritus of Economics at the UBC, and a member of the National Statistics Council.

John Robinson, Executive Director UBC Sustainability Initiative, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

John Robinson is the Executive Director of the UBC Sustainability Initiative, responsible for leading the integration of academic and operational sustainability on the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus. He is also a professor with UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment & Sustainability, and the Department of Geography. The Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS), recently opened on the UBC campus, is a major project.

John Stutz, Senior Fellow, Tellus Institute (Boston, MA, USA)

Dr. Stutz is a Senior Fellow of Tellus Institute. Since 2004 he has been an active participant in Tellus' Great Transition effort. He is a founding member of the Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative (SCORAI).



Joji Kumagai, Executive Director, Strathcona Business Improvement Association (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Joji Kumagai has been the executive director of the Strathcona Business Improvement Association (SBIA) since 2010. He majored in ecology and toxicology at Simon Fraser University and is currently working on his accounting designation. He has a keen interest in the role business plays in a more environmentally sustainable world.

Joyce Shen, Associate, One Earth (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Joyce Shen works with One Earth on the Rethinking the Good Life project, a North American social change initiative that identifies and acts on high impact areas for accelerating breakthroughs in sustainable consumption and production. Joyce is passionate about design thinking, mindfulness and the great outdoors. She holds a BASc in Environmental Engineering and a MSc in Forest Ecology from UBC.

Juliet Schor, Professor, Boston College (Chestnut Hill, MA, USA)

Juliet Schor is Professor of Sociology at Boston College. Her most recent book is True Wealth: How and Why Millions of Americans are Creating a Time-Rich, Ecologically Light, Small-Scale, High-Satisfaction Economy (previously published as Plenitude). She also wrote the national best-seller The Overworked American, The Overspent American and Born to Buy. Schor is a co-founder of the Center for a New American Dream, a former Guggenheim Fellow, winner of the Herman Daly Prize, and a member of the MacArthur Connected Learning Research Network, for which she is studying connected consumption.

Karen Litfin, Professor, University of Washington (Seattle, WA, USA)

Karen Litfin is a professor of political science and environmental studies at the University of Washington. Karen is author of Ozone Discourses and The Greening of Sovereignty in World Politics, and is currently writing a book on her travels to fourteen ecovillages around the world. Kathryn Cholette, Representative, Village Vancouver Transition Town Initiative (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Kathryn Cholette is a Canadian environmentalist and left-green, who served as leader of the Green Party of Canada from 1988 to 1990. She was the first woman elected to lead a federal political party in Canada, preceding Audrey McLaughlin by a year. Kathryn has a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies from Simon Fraser University.

Laura Stanik, Assistant Director, Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ, USA)

Laura Stanik holds a Master of Science degree in Global Affairs from Rutgers University and teaches "Society, Technology, and the Environment", an undergraduate course at NJIT. Her research focuses on sustainable consumption with special attention to individual behavior change, innovative uses of online tools, social movements, and virtual learning communities.

Louise Schwartz, Co-Founder, Recycling Alternative / Be the Change Earth Alliance (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Galvanized by garbage, Louise set out in a hatchback in 1989 to start collecting recycling from businesses. She has been trashbusting and trash talking ever since. Contrary to the prediction that paperless offices were just around the corner, 20 years on, we’re churning it out more than ever.

Marc Lee, Researcher, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (Ottawa, ON, Canada)

Marc Lee researches and writes on a variety of economic and social policy issues for the CCPA’s BC and National Offices. Marc is the Co-Director of the Climate Justice Project, a five-year research partnership with the University of British Columbia, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, examining the links between climate change policies and social justice.



Mark Holland, Vice President of Development, New Monaco Enterprise Corporation (Peachland, BC, Canada)

Mark is Vice President of Development for the New Monaco Enterprise Corporation – a company developing a highly innovative master-planned community in the Okanagan. Mark’s past work has included serving as a city planner in Vancouver, founding and managing Vancouver’s Sustainability Office, and cofounding two consulting companies, the Holland Barrs Planning Group and subsequently HB Lanarc Consultants.

Mark Roseland, Director, Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, BC, Canada)

Dr. Mark Roseland is Director of the Centre for Sustainable Community Development (www.sfu.ca/cscd) and Professor of Resource and Environmental Management (www.rem.sfu.ca) at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Roseland lectures internationally and advises communities and governments on sustainable development policy and planning. He is leading development of a global network linking Sustainable Communities researchers and practitioners (www.pando.sc).

Maureen Cureton, Green Business Manager, Vancity Credit Union (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Maureen works with Canada’s largest Credit Union, Vancity, to advance environmentally progressive business development in our community. Her focus is innovative financing solutions, partnerships, and other support for green businesses and social enterprises. She serves on government and industry association working groups and committees, and teaches sustainability for UBC and Royal Roads University, and has co-authored 3 books.

Maurie Cohen, Director, New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, NJ, USA)

Maurie Cohen is Associate Fellow at the Tellus Institute and Associate Professor and Director of the Program in Environmental and Sustainability Policy and the Program in Science, Technology and Society at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Dr. Cohen is a co-founder of the Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative (SCORAI) and the editor of Sustainability: Science, Practice, and Policy.



Michael Narberhaus, Researcher, SMART CSOs Lab (London, UK)

Michael Narberhaus is leading the SMART CSOs Lab, an international network of civil society leaders, academics and funders aiming to develop and put into practice strategies that embrace the cultural and systemic root causes lying behind the social and environmental crises of our times.

Michael Travers, Manager, BC Hydro (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Michael’s mission is to create new value for Power Smart through the application of a Business Development & Partnership building approach. His team is focused on developing New Models, New Channels of Promotion, and building new Workforce Capacity for energy conservation & efficiency.

Naomi Krogman, Professor, University of Alberta (Edmonton, AB, Canada)

Naomi Krogman is a professor in Environmental Sociology in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology at the University of Alberta. Her research on sustainable consumption has examined the opportunities and constraints for sustainable consumption practices in suburban vs. inner city neighborhoods, and the bundling of various kinds of social practices in different contexts.

Noelani Dubeta, Social Researcher (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Noelani Dubeta has an MSc in Well-being and Human

Development and has worked internationally on environmental

and social initiatives. By embedding culturally-sensitive

Paulette Padanyi, Associate Professor, University of Guelph (Guelph, ON, Canada)

Paulette Padanyi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies (College of Management and Economics) at the University of Guelph. She teaches non-profit marketing and marketing communications. Paulette also conducts research in two pro-social topic areas: the use of local foods in health care and sustainable household consumption.



Peter Dauvergne, Professor, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Peter Dauvergne is Professor of Political Science and Canada Research Chair in Global Environmental Politics. His research focuses on the politics of global environmental change, including current projects on sustainable consumption and corporate social responsibility. Peter currently holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant (2010-13) on the "Global Environmental Politics of Eco-Consumerism."

Peter Victor, Professor, York University (Toronto, ON, Canada)

Dr. Peter Victor is a Professor in Environmental Studies at York University. He is an economist who has worked on environmental issues for over 40 years as an academic, consultant and public servant. His most recent book is, Managing without Growth, Slower by Design, Not Disaster.

Philip Vergragt, Fellow, Tellus Institute (Boston, MA, USA) & Research Professor, Clark University (Worcester, MA, USA)

Philip J. Vergragt PhD is a Professor Emeritus of TU Delft; a Research Professor at Clark University, Worcester, USA; and a Fellow at Tellus Institute in Boston, USA. His research interests include technological innovation; sustainable consumption; housing; backcasting; technology assessment. He has widely published in academic journals and co-authored two books. Prof. Vergragt obtained a PhD in Chemistry from Leiden University in 1976.

Rosemary Cooper, Coordinator, Simon Fraser University & Principal, Creating Places (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Rosemary has been working to advance sustainability for almost 20 years with an emphasis on sound strategy, communications and effective collaboration. She currently runs her own consulting firm, CreatingPLACES, and is Curriculum Coordinator for SFU’s Certificate in Sustainable Community Development. She holds a Master’s in Environmental Studies from York University.



Ruben Anderson, Sustainability consultant and behavior change specialist (Victoria, BC, Canada)

Ruben Anderson is a behaviour change specialist and sustainable systems consultant. He has taught Sustainable Design at Emily Carr University and consulted for both the public and private sector. He has won awards for Cradle-to-Cradle product design, but is most proud of the 250% increase in recycling at an apartment pilot project.

Sadhu Johnson, Deputy City Manager, City of Vancouver (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

As Deputy City Manager’s Manager, Sadhu contributes to the overall management of the City of Vancouver. Sadhu oversees the environmental and emergency development areas within the City Office. Prior to moving to Vancouver, Sadhu served as Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Chief Environmental Officer responsible for the City of Chicago environmental initiatives. Sasha Caldera, Co-Founder, Fair Trade Vancouver (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Sasha Caldera holds degrees in Political Science and an extended minor in Economics from SFU. In 2009, Sasha co-founded Fair Trade Vancouver, and established International Development Drinks. In 2011, Sasha chaired a national working group with the Canadian Earth Summit Coalition. Sasha is completing his MA at Royal Roads University.

Stephen McCauley, Research Associate, Clark University (Worcester, MA, USA)

Steve is a Research Associate at the George P. Marsh Institute at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. With colleagues in the Socio-Technical Transitions Initiative at the Marsh Institute, he is engaged in collaborative action research aimed at stimulating and evaluating efforts to promote a broad energy transition in Central Massachusetts.



Tania Del Matto, Managing Director, My Sustainable Canada (Kitchener, ON, Canada)

Tania Del Matto is a co-founder and managing director of My Sustainable Canada (MSC) – a national not-for-profit organization. MSC bridges the gap between research and action for a more sustainable future. Through our research, expertise and collaborations, we encourage change through the purchasing power of consumers, institutions, business and government.

Thomas Princen, Associate Professor, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, USA)

Thomas Princen explores issues of social and ecological sustainability at the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. He works on principles for sustainability, overconsumption, the language and ethics of resource use, and the transition out of fossil fuels. He now serves as an Associate Professor of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy at the University of Michigan.

Tobi Reyes, Director, One Earth & Chair, Port Capital Group (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Currently, Tobi is the Chair of Port Capital Group, a private equity

investment firm primarily investing in commercial real estate

located in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. Prior to Tobi’s

involvement in real estate and the sustainability movement, he had

been working in the information technology sector since

graduating from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario (B.A.

Psychology/History).

Tom Bowerman, Director, PolicyInteractive (Eugene, OR, USA)

Tom Bowerman has a degree in architecture from the University of Oregon, and has practiced in the field of architecture, urban design and planning for three decades at the interface of development and environmental protection. He co-founded several non-profit organizations and currently directs PolicyInteractive, a public opinion research project studying consumption issues.



Vanessa Timmer, Executive Director, One Earth (Vancouver, BC, Canada) & Associate, Harvard University (Cambridge, MA, USA)

Vanessa Timmer is the Executive Director of One Earth, a nonprofit focused on advancing sustainable consumption and production. She is also an Associate with the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Vanessa co-hosts the Metro Vancouver television show, The Sustainable Region, and is part of the Creative Team for The Future We Want, a global campaign to create positive and compelling visions of life in a sustainable future.

Viccy Salazar, Senior Advisor, Environmental Protection Agency (Region 10) (Seattle, WA, USA)

Viccy Salazar is the Senior Advisor for Energy and Sustainability at US EPA in Seattle. Her mission is to integrate sustainability and sustainable energy into EPA Region 10’s programs, partnerships and operations. To achieve her mission, she addresses environmental problems holistically, solving them at their root instead of cleaning them up after they have already occurred.

Wendy Philleo, Executive Director, Center for the New American Dream (Charlottesville, VA, USA)

Wendy Philleo is the Executive Director of the Center for a New American Dream. Prior to joining New Dream, Wendy ran her own consulting company and worked as a program officer at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation where she designed and ran a $25 million, five-year cross-cutting grant program.
