“Ending the silence for men whose partners
have breast cancer”
NBCF on Wednesday 26th June released a landmark report aimed at addressing the significant gap in information, resources and support which exists for male partners of women living with breast cancer. Co-authored by CEO, Carole Renouf, the report sheds light on the experience of male partners through case studies and a review of existing research. Issues which emerge range from a lack of information, inclusion and support through to changing relationships and concerns about employment, sexual intimacy and body image. NBCF’s objective in publishing this report is to identify and draw attention to this issue and to stimulate research into this area and encourage men to participate. The Ending the Silence report is available to download from NBCF
Dr Erica Sloan
Dr Erica Sloan had the idea to study the link between stress and cancer when she realised that yoga helped her to stay healthy during stressful times in her life.
“The way stress affects our health has interested me for a long time,” she says. “There’s no evidence that stress causes cancer, but it does appear to play a role in cancer progression.”
Thanks to an NBCF Early Career Fellowship, Dr Sloan and colleagues have shown that chronic stress may help cancer cells to spread (metastasise) in some patients.
Dr Sloan, from Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Melbourne, says adrenalin appears to be important in driving the spread of cancer. When your body is stressed, it releases adrenalin. Drugs that block the stress pathway – such as beta-blockers which are commonly used to treat high blood pressure – may slow or reverse cancer progression.
Dr Sloan mentions, that it’s too soon to suggest that people with breast cancer
6
should take beta-blockers to prevent breast cancer spread.
“We already know that people who happen to be taking beta-blockers for hypertension when they’re diagnosed with early breast cancer tend to do much better than people who aren’t taking beta-blockers,” Dr Sloan says. “Our research suggests that we urgently need to understand which beta-blockers protect women from breast cancer. Some of our recent work suggests that only some beta-blockers will slow cancer. Once we confirm that, it will be critical to quickly take this into clinical trials.”
In the meantime, she says there is enough evidence that people with cancer should try to relieve stress in a way that suits them. “For example, yoga and meditation help me reduce stress, but my sister prefers kickboxing. Stress relief is beneficial in many ways and there is growing evidence that it may help to block stress responsive pathways that help tumour cells to spread.”

“Breast cancer touched my life when my
sister-in-law was diagnosed six years ago.
Leaving a gift in my Will to a charity that
means something is very important to me and
my family and the vital research that NBCF
supports is very concrete, you know exactly
what you are leaving the money for.”
Maria, 45, has confirmed that she has left a
bequest in her Will to NBCF. Maria has left a
certain percentage of her estate to charities,
close to heart, one of which is NBCF.

Register4, NBCF’s online initiative to fast track research has offered 13 projects to members since launch in 2010. Members were recently invited to take part in Dr Victoria Bray’s project for ANY cancer survivor who had noticed changes in their memory following chemotherapy. The project was recruited in 24 hours and would normally have taken one year to recruit. The researcher was delighted and has since re-opened the project.
There are several projects currently looking for participants in areas including cancer and fertility, breast edema and exercise trial and treatment of post cancer fatigue. We encourage you to check projects currently recruiting

“Register4 is a brilliant initiative. It certainly
brings to my attention to research that
perhaps I wouldn’t be aware of. If I can do
anything to increase the knowledge about
breast cancer, I am fully supportive and happy
to do what I can”. (Response from member
survey, May 2013)
Review Australia launched an engaging in
store campaign to promote their new
partnership with the National Breast Cancer
Foundation.
The "Windows of Hope" promotion was
designed to help support NBCF’s aspirational
goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by
2030. For a small fee of $5.00, Review invited
8
customers to write inspirational message of
hope and support on beautifully designed
vintage postcards.
The promotion offered a visually appealing
display, with an important message of hope
for breast cancer survivors.
Look out for further in-store fund raising
initiatives from Review through the year.
