Cat C6.6 ACERT. The Cat C6.6 is a6.6 L (403 in3) displacement, in-linesix cylinder engine. The C6.6 utilizesACERT Technology, a series ofCaterpillar engineered innovations thatprovides advanced electronic control,precise fuel delivery and refined airmanagement, resulting in outstandingperformance and lower emissions.

The C6.6 with ACERT Technologyoffers a compact design with big, heavyduty engine features for outstandingdurability, reliability and performance.The C6.6 incorporates a new cross flowcylinder head design, 4 valve head andan ADEM™ A4 electronic controller.The C6.6 also features a proven cylinderblock, pistons and crankshaft.

Electronic Control ADEM™ A4.The Advanced Diesel EngineManagement – Electronic ControlModule consistently monitors importantengine conditions and functions. It usessensors throughout the engine to regulatefuel delivery and all other engine systemsthat require input to manage load andperformance. The ADEM A4 controlleris the brain behind engine responsiveness,self-diagnosis, controlling emissionsand fuel economy.

Air Management. Air managementis a key concept in optimizing engineperformance and controlling emissions.Engines must breathe clean cool air inorder to perform. To aid this, the C6.6uses a turbocharger fitted with a smartwaste gate to give precise and reliablecontrol of the boost pressure. A newcross-flow design in the cylinder headfacilitates air movement, while tightertolerances between the piston andcylinder wall reduce blow by gases.

Fuel System. Through multiple injectionfuel delivery, fuel is introduced in thecombustion chamber in a numberof precisely controlled microbursts.Injecting fuel in this way allows forprecise shaping of the combustion cyclewhile reducing engine sound levels

Fuel Pump. The C6.6 uses an oil-lubricated high-pressure fuel pumpto feed a common fuel rail. By usingan oil-lubricated fuel pump, the C6.6has been designed to be more tolerantof alternative fuels.

Fuel Priming Pump. An electrical fuelpriming pump is located between the fueltank and the combined water separator/primary fuel filter. The electric primingpump eliminates the need to pre-fill ormanually prime filters after a change,thus reducing contamination andimproving injector life.

Engine Idle Management. The EngineIdle Management System (EIMS)maximizes fuel efficiency and providesflexibility in managing idle speedsfor specific application requirements.Four idle control speeds are available.

Powershift Transmission. The IT38Hcontinues to use powershift transmissiontechnology proven on previous series.The countershaft powershift transmissionfeatures heavy-duty components tohandle the toughest applications.Built-in electronic controls enhanceproductivity and durability.

Control Throttle Shifting. Control ThrottleShifting regulates engine speed duringhigh-energy directional and gear changesfor smoother shifting and longercomponent life.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC) system modulates clutchesindividually to improve shift quality,component life and operator comfort.Adjustment is simplified with allsolenoid valves externally mountedon top of the transmission housing.

Axles. The IT38H axles are designed byCaterpillar for durability in all operatingconditions. The front axle is rigidlymounted to the frame to support theweight of the wheel loader and withstandinternal torque loads as well as externalforces encountered throughout operation.

The rear axle is designed to allow±12° oscillation. All four wheels remainon the ground over uneven terrainproviding excellent stabilityand traction.

Integrated Braking System. The Catexclusive Integrated Braking Systemreduces axle oil temperatures andimproves transmission neutralizersmoothness. IBS has a direct impacton durability of the axles and brakesespecially in applications involvinglong distances and/or heavy braking.

Radiator. Brazed aluminum constructionprovides a stronger joint for maximumdurability and resistance to leaks.The 6-fins-per-inch design decreasesthe chance of blockage and plugging.

Structures. The articulated frame designof the IT38H features a durable plateengine frame and four plate loadertower that is robotically welded.Robotic welding creates frame jointswith deep plate penetration welds andexcellent fusion for maximum strengthand durability.

Engine End Frame (EEF). The IT38Huses a proven solid plate engine endframe which provides a strong, rigidstructure that resists twisting and evenlydistributes impact loads. The result is anextremely solid mounting platform forthe engine, transmission, axle, ROPSand other accessories.

Hitch. The distance between the upperand lower hitch plates is an importantcontributor to machine performance andcomponent life. The Caterpillar hitchdesign provides excellent load distributionand bearing life. Both the upper andlower hitch pins pivot on double taperedroller bearings – improving durabilityby distributing both vertical andhorizontal loads over a larger surfacearea. The wide opening also providesexcellent service access.

Non-Engine End Frame (NEEF).The non-engine end frame provides asolid mounting base for the front axle,lift arms and lift cylinders. The fabricated,four-plate loader tower absorbs theforces associated with loading, twistingand material handling.

Counterweight. The one-piececounterweight is integrated into theIT38H design and provides addedprotection for the lights by incorporatingthem into the top of the structure.

8-Bar Linkage. This linkage providesparallel lift to keep the load levelthroughout the lift cycle – particularlyimportant when using forks. Parallel liftallows the operator to concentrate onplacing the load, instead of retaining it.Visibility to the work tool is excellent.

Load Sensing Hydraulics. The IT38Hfeatures a load sensing hydraulic systemthat supplies flow and pressure for theimplements only upon demand, andonly in the amounts necessary toperform the needed work thus providinga more efficient loader.

With the new S3PC Priority ProportionalPressure Compensation Valve, implementcontrol is improved over the previoussystem – raise/lower and rack back/dumpcan be operated simultaneously.

Operators will notice enhanced easeof operation, more rimpull into the pileas well as an increase in lift force.

New! Differential Lock. Maximizeproductivity with the new hydrauliclocking front differential. This standardfeature provides operators with theconfidence to maneuver through poorunderfoot conditions with ‘on the fly’engagement.

A Caterpillar exclusive, the optionalautomatic front/rear locking differentialcollects input from sensors throughoutthe loader and adapts tractive effort tomeet operating requirements.

Constant Net Horsepower. On manycompetitive machines, gross horsepoweris constant, meaning that net enginepower available for actual work will varybased on demands made from parasiticsources, such as air conditioning orcooling fans.

The Cat C6.6 engine is electronicallyconfigured to provide constant nethorsepower at full parasitic loadenhancing productivity and improvingfuel efficiency.

On-Demand Fan. With electronic controlof the variable speed on-demand fan,temperature levels of the enginecoolant, transmission oil, hydraulic oiland air inlet manifold are constantlymonitored. This data is used to controland maintain fan speed at the levelnecessary to maintain normal systemtemperatures. Controlled fan speedimproves fuel efficiency, lowers noiselevels and reduces radiator plugging.

Isolated Cooling System. The IT38Hcooling system is isolated from theengine compartment by a non-metallicshield. The hydraulically driven,variable speed fan draws in cleanair from the rear of the machine andexhausts it out the sides and top ofthe hood. The end results are optimalcooling efficiency, increased fuelefficiency, less radiator pluggingand reduced operator sound levels.

Countershaft Powershift Transmission.The electronic countershaft powershifttransmission with automatic shiftcapability is designed and built byCaterpillar. The very responsive, full-power speed and directional changesprovide excellent cycle timesand productivity.

Fuel Economy Mode. Match transmissionshifting patterns to machine applicationrequirements. The Fuel Economy Mode(within Messenger) provides operatorswith the ability to choose between threedifferent shift modes in order to maximizeshift quality and fuel efficiency.

Ride Control. The optional Ride ControlSystem improves ride, performance andload retention when traveling over roughterrain. Operators gain confidencemoving at higher speeds in load andcarry operations decreasing cycle timesand increasing productivity.

Material Handling Buckets. The MaterialHandling Bucket is a flat-floor bucketused for handling stockpiled materialssuch as aggregates or other easy-to-loadmaterials requiring moderate breakoutforce.

Coal Buckets. Coal Buckets maximizeproductivity in loading and stockpilingcoal and other materials of similar density.

Hydraulic Service Center. Transmissionand hydraulic oil filters are located inthe Hydraulic Service Center, behindthe hinged, right-side access ladder.The hydraulic oil tank can be drainedfrom this location using the access port.

Electric Service Center. A lockablecompartment located just below theleft side access platform contains keyelectrical components such as theremote jump-start receptacle, batterydisconnect switch, circuit breakers andhood actuation switch. The maintenancefree batteries are conveniently locatedunder the electric service center.

New! Multi-piece Axle. With theintroduction of Caterpillar’s new multi-piece axles, service brakes and finaldrives are located outboard and provideeasy access when service is required.

Ground Level Grease Points.Grease fittings are grouped throughoutthe machine thus facilitating easylubrication of vital components.

S•O•S SERVICES. Sampling valves onthe IT38H allow quick access to engine,transmission and hydraulic oils forS•O•S analysis. Oil change intervalsand other services can be optimizedaccording to your work schedule,reducing downtime and managingexpenses.

Remote Pressure Taps. Pressure taps forkey systems are grouped and centrallylocated throughout the machine andhelp facilitate quick diagnostics.

Brake Wear Indicators. Axles areequipped with standard brake wearindicators, allowing a technician toeasily determine when it is necessaryto service the brakes.

Sight Gauges. Well-protected, yet easilyvisible sight gauges for the transmission,hydraulic oil and radiator coolant alloweasy daily checks while reducing therisk of contaminants entering the systems.

Engine Compartment Access. A singlemechanical lift cylinder with manualback-up opens the hood. The tiltinghood provides excellent access to theengine and cooling compartments andif necessary, the entire hood can beremoved with the built-in lift points.

With the hood closed, quick checks ofthe engine oil level, coolant site gaugeand air inlet indicator can be completedthrough the side service door.

Ecology Drains. Engine, transmissionand hydraulic oils can be easily drainedwith standard-equipment ecology drains.An axle oil ecology drain is optional.

Electric Priming Pump. An electric fuelpriming pump located on the primaryfuel filter base eliminates the need topre-fill or manually prime filters after achange, eliminating engine contamination.

Cooling System. Cooling systemaccess for clean-out and maintenanceis outstanding. The perforated andcorrugated grill minimizes debrisbuild-up and swings out for easycleaning and access to the cooling cores.

The full-width air conditioningcondenser and oil cooler cores swingout 45° to allow easy cleaning of therear radiator face. An access panellocated on the right side of the radiatorsupport structure provides access to thefront face of the radiator and ATAACcores for easy cleaning.

Complete Customer Support. Cat fieldservice technicians have the experienceand tools necessary to service yourloader on site. Technical experts at thedealership and Caterpillar can provideadditional assistance to field servicetechnicians as needed.

When on-site repair isn’t enough, Catdealerships are fully equipped to serviceyour loader quickly.

Operating Environment. The IT38Hprovides operators with a comfortableoperating environment with generousstorage space and excellent visibility.

Seat. The durable seat adjusts 6-waysto accommodate all sized operators.The seat features an automotive stylelumbar support for maximum comfort.The Cat C-500 Series Comfort air-suspension seat is optional as is aheated backrest and seat cushion.

Implement Pod. The newly restyledimplement pod provides superior comfortthrough the full length adjustablearmrest. Standard transmission F-N-Rswitch allows operators to keep theirhand on the implement control leverswhile making directional shifts.An optional joystick with integratedF-N-R switch is available and replacesthe lift and tilt levers.

Visibility. The IT38H offers excellentvisibility to the front and rear of themachine. Distortion-free flat glassstretches to the floor of the cab forexcellent visibility to the bucket.Wet-arm wipers on both front and backkeep the windows clean in any condition.

Rear Vision Camera. An optionalrear vision camera is available toclearly monitor movement behindthe wheel loader.

Lighting Packages. In addition tothe standard roading lights, optionallighting packages are available for low-light applications. Optional auxiliaryhalogen or High Intensity Discharge(HID) cab lights provide exceptionallighting for night work. A rotatingbeacon is available as a safety feature.

Entry and Exit. A ladder with aggressivetread pattern keeps debris build-up to aminimum. The ladder is at a 5° forwardincline for easy entry and exit.

The main cab door opens a full180° and latches in place to allow safenavigation to the rear of the machine.

The right side door opens 10°, orcompletely for secondary exit simplyby pulling a pin. A full-length ladderon the right side facilitates safe exitif needed.
