It’s no secret that cats are now Amer-ica’s preferred pet. With 81 million pet cats now taking up residence in American households, you would think that cats are the most common visitors to the veterinarian’s office. Not so. Cats are taken to the veterinarian half as

often as dogs. But the reality is that they need regular veterinary care, too.

“I think part of the problem is

that we (as a society) still view

cats as barnyard pets that can

take care of themselves,” says

Billy Griswold, DVM, of Priority

Pet Hospital. “And cats are really

good at hiding signs of illness.”

Cats are prone to some illnesses such as kidney disease, arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disease and dental issues that if caught early can be managed. However, left unchecked these issues can become costly to treat and lead to pain and suffering for your feline. Dr. Griswold

recommends a yearly veterinary exam for your feline at a minimum. For older cats or those with ongoing health issues, visits to the veterinarian should increase to at least bi-yearly.

To make doctor visits less stressful for you and your pet, follow these steps for transport:

* Find a sturdy cat carrier that opens on the top and side and whose top removes easily.

* Train your cat to go into carrier by keeping it in one of your feline’s favorite spots.

* Make the carrier cat-friendly by leaving the door open, lining it with a scented piece of your clothing and putting treats and toys in it.

* Gradually get cat used to being in the carrier in the car – first while car is shut off then while car is running.

According to Billy Griswold, DVM, of Priority Pet Hospital, 80 percent of adult pets have some sort of gum or oral dis-ease and about half of all adult pets are overweight. If any of these issues are left unchecked, they can lead to more severe health issues down the road. But there’s one easy way to keep your companion in good health – take him for regular check-ups with a veterinarian.

During an annual exam, a veterinar-ian should check your pet’s coat, teeth, eyes and listen to the heart and lungs. Palpating the stomach and feeling the legs will let the veterinarian know if there are any unusual lumps. The doctor will also check anal glands to make sure there is nothing abnormal. “Basically, we

are looking for any change, even subtle changes, in your pet since the last time we saw him or anything abnormal,” Janet Bailey, DVM, DACVIM, at Ari-zona Veterinary Internal Medicine, says. Vaccinations, heartworm prevention and routine deworming are also important parts of an annual exam.

Detecting problems in the early stages, will lead to less expense, less difficulty in treating the issue and better success. “Regular wellness exams allow us to detect illness earlier,” says Dr. Bailey. “It is important to monitor organ function (liver, kidneys, thyroid) and to test for common infectious diseases, such as Val-ley Fever. Early detection of disease may allow for more successful treatment.”

Valley Animal Care Guide

Traci Hulse, DVM, of Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic, says if you’re a horse owner in Arizona, you’re lucky. Not only are there a variety of equine veterinar-ians to choose from in the Valley, but, she says, there are four referring equine hospitals available if surgery or other specialized therapies are needed for your horse. “In some states, horse own-ers have to travel for hours just to get to a hospital,” Dr. Hulse says. Equine medicine has come a long way in the past few years. With advanced diagnos-tic tools such as digital ultrasound and x-ray, MRIs and CT scans, equine vet-erinarians can diagnose disease or injury sooner, resulting in improved outcomes. Equine veterinarians have become more

specialized. Ophthalmologists, inter-nists, reproduction specialists, surgeons and emergency critical care specialists are available in our state. Dr. Hulse says veterinarians are also doing – quite suc-cessfully – stem cell therapy and IRAP injections for horses who have joint problems. In addition, colic surgery techniques have improved resulting in much better survival rates.

Dr. Hulse recommends at least once a year visits to the veterinarian for all horses. The recent EHV-1 (Equine Her-pesvirus) outbreak alone is good reason to have a regular veterinarian. The vet-erinary community was instrumental in getting the word out to the local horse

community about the outbreak and giving instructions to keep Valley horses healthy. “We had multiple cases here in the Valley,” Dr. Hulse says, “but we contained it quickly. Only one horse in the state died from the disease. It could have been much worse.”

There have also been a couple cases of CEM (Contagious Equine Metritus) de-tected in the Arabian horse community recently. While this disease is not fatal, it can cause infertility and miscarriages. Dr. Hulse says because of these cases, there may be more testing of stallions in the coming year when breeding season rolls around, and testing may be re-quired for international equine shipping.

Valley Animal Care Guide

Entertaining friends and family in your home is one of life’s many pleasures. Whether it’s a 100-guest birthday bash or an intimate dinner party, it’s important to take a minute before guests arrive to make sure your pet will be safe during the festivities. It may be necessary to put your pet in a back room for a large party if you feel the noise and commotion will be too upsetting. If your pet has dietary intolerances or if you just don’t want guests feeding your animal human food, place small bowls of your pet’s food out that party-goers can hand out as treats.

It’s important that pets are not al-lowed to clean up leftovers after a party because many human foods are too rich and spicy for them, and can lead to diarrhea, gastroenteritis or pancreatitis. If your animal is going

to roam free during the party, make sure he can’t get into the trash and ingest something harmful. Birds are especially vulnerable to inhaled par-ticles and fumes that might be present at a party such as aerosol products, tobacco products and air fresheners. Cooking fumes, smoke and odors can also present a potentially fatal hazard for birds.

HERE ARE SOME HUMAN FOODS THAT MAY BE HARMFUL TO PETS:• Avocado• Chocolate• Coffee• Alcohol• Macadamia Nuts (hazardous to dogs)• Grapes and Raisins• Yeast Dough• Raw Meat and Eggs, and Bones• Xylitol, which is in Gum, Candy, Baked Goods and Toothpaste• Onions, Garlic and Chives• Milk• Salt

Valley Animal Care Guide

Traveling with pets has become more and more common. And while it’s nice to have your constant companion right by your side during a relaxing holiday, there are some things to keep in mind to make sure your time away stays relaxing.

Before taking any trip with your pet, visit your veterinarian to make sure your animal is in good health. In most cases, if you are taking your pet across state or international borders, a health certificate signed by a veterinarian is required. Some countries (and Hawaii) require quaran-tine. If you have an anxious animal, you may want to talk to your veterinarian about medication for anxiety or even nausea. Be sure to test the medication on your animal before traveling. Also, make sure all tags and microchips have been updated with current information before you leave.

If you are traveling by air, check with the airline about any size restrictions, require-ments or regulations. Provide your pet with frozen bowls of water, activity toys and tape a leash onto the outside of the crate if he is traveling in cargo.

If you’re camping, always keep your pet in sight and on a leash. Depending on your destination, ask your veterinarian about flea, tick and heartworm preven-tion. Now, go have a great time.

DESERT DANGERSSpending time outside may be one of your pet’s favorite activities, but some of the things that make our desert unique and wonderful can also have harmful effects on your animal.

When you think of a desert, you think hot – some-times too hot for man or beast. Keep these desert environment rules in mind. Never leave your pet in a parked car. Avoid or limit exercise in the summer heat, and hot pavement can burn pets’ feet. While your pet may enjoy cooling off in the pool, you should always supervise his swim. If your animal gets into cactus spines, keep him calm and remove the spines with a comb or needle-nose pliers. Since this is a painful process, you should contact your veterinarian if there are multiple spines in case pain control is needed to get the spines out. Ani-mals should not be allowed to chew on the spines themselves.
