Summer is once again upon us in a few short weeks and we
only have one major event left before we break until fall. Stay
tuned as we do have some summer events planned for you. As
you are aware, one of our missions is to work to elect
Republican candidates and support the Republican party. I
know I am redundant emphasizing the importance of this
mission. Like I’ve said previously, the Democrats are out to
take this state we love and will do anything and everything to
accomplish this. It is of the utmost importance for each of us to
get involved and work towards keeping this state RED.
One of the important events we will be doing is a training session offered by the
AzGOP in June. Please refer to Barbara Melkin’s article in this newsletter for the date
and time and what information will be included in the training session.
For those of you who worked on Debbie Lesko’s campaign, please turn in your hours to
Mary Williams, Awards Chairman. Remember the club will receive extra points when we
work on campaigns. Also, we should turn in our hours worked for Arrowhead Republican
Women projects. I know we have until June of 2019 to turn them in, but if we do it now, it
will not be so overwhelming next year. You will find Mary’s instructions and a tally sheet to
keep track of your hours towards the end of the newsletter.
Thank you to all who participated in the Fashion Show. It was a huge success and I would
like to give a special shout out of thanks to Tracy Livingston, 3rd VP Ways and Means and to
her team for a job “well done!” Great job, ladies!!! Shopping was fantastic and I must say I
spent way too much, however I am really enjoying all of my purchases.
Our 2018 Candidates’ forum is June 2nd from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Please tell all your friends to
attend. It is a great opportunity for them to meet the candidates and hear what they have to
say.
I wish you all a great summer and look forward to seeing many of you during the summer

Not only is it a good refresher for those with campaign experience, but it particularly helpful to our new members.

GLENDALE, AZ – Congresswoman Debbie Lesko announced the locations of her offices and the hiring of key staff members. “After taking the oath of office just one week ago I am happy to announce we have both a West Valley and Washington D.C. office, open, staffed and ready to serve the constituents of the eighth district,” said Congresswoman Lesko.

Congresswoman Lesko also announced the hiring of several key staff members, including her Chief of Staff, Abby Gunderson-Schwarz. Abby, joins Congresswoman Lesko’s staff after serving the last four years as Legislative Director for Congressman Lamar Smith. She brings over a decade of experience on Capitol Hill. Also joining the staff are Legislative Director Matt Simon, former policy advisor at the Arizona Senate and Goldwater Institute, and Lisa Gray who will serve as District Director. Lisa previously served as Operations Manager of the Arizona Registrar of Contractors and the Executive Assistant to the Director.

Hello ladies, Already we have, in our very short time, become known in our respective neighborhoods. We have provided and delivered ten knockers! It is a very exciting time for us. This process was established, after having made contact with the originators in Washington state, establishing "PR"
(personal relationships) with the organization, creating a name for ARW, getting on the Knitted Knockers directory, obtaining knitters and materials, and finally, producing the knockers for the survivors! Yes! It's been a whirlwind! The results are very rewarding! Please continue your support. Our new address: [email protected], which will be on their website soon. If you know of someone in need, you would go to this website. Give the organization at least a week to get it up and running. Thank you very much for your support. I have heard from Barbara, the leader of the Knitted Knockers, and have been personally invited to meet with her and the knitters this summer in Bellingham, WA. I will take pictures/film of the knitters in action so ARW can view them in the fall. So far, we have received nothing but hugs and smiles from our recipients! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! My Nail Friends We have closed our activity for the summer. We celebrated with a luncheon at Nick's Diner. I invited a surprise "guest" to attend, and our members learned we have ANOTHER Arrowhead Republican member joining us in the fall! It's never too late to join. Contact me from the directory. We have fun! You come when you can, so you do not have to make it every 2 wks. If something else takes precedence, such as Illness, travel, etc. there are no dues. You work as a team, not alone. Subject: The National Motto
Look on any U.S. coin or paper currency and you’ll find America’s national motto, In God We Trust. The suggestion to recognize God on U.S. money initially came during the Civil War from Pennsylvania minister M. R. Watkinson. “From my heart I have felt our
national shame in disowning God as not the least of our present national disasters,” Watkinson wrote to Salmon P. Chase, Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of the treasury. Chase thought the suggestion a good one, and he instructed the U.S. Mint to come up with a motto recognizing that “no nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense.” The resulting phrase, In God We Trust, may have had its inspiration in the fourth stanza of Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner”: “Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, and this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’ ” On April 22, 1864, Congress passed legislation authorizing use of the phrase In God We Trust, and it first appeared on two-cent coins issued that same year. For many years after that, the slogan appeared on some coins and not on others. In 1955 Congress ordered it placed on all U.S. currency, and in 1956 Congress made In God We Trust the official national motto. The phrase continues to remind us that our country has long found strength through faith in God, and that He has bestowed many blessings on America, including our freedom.

Coupons for Heroes Coupons for Heroes is a program that provides expired and unwanted manufacturer coupons to military families stationed overseas through the commissary programs. Our program enhances the lives of the military families stationed overseas by sending them pertaining manufacturer coupons through the
commissary program. I wanted to express my gratitude for those who have donated coupons to the program thus far. So far, we have sent 794 coupons for a value of $1,711.45. Our goal is to send 100,000 coupons from ARW. We need continued support through donating your coupons and collecting coupons from family, friends and neighbors. If you are able to cut them, then please cut them. If you can sort the cut coupons, then sort them into food and non-food coupons. Then get the coupons to me. What Should I Send? Coupons for Heroes is a unique program because we are able to accept cut and uncut coupons. This means we can accept whole inserts as well as cut and sorted coupons. Yes, we would love for you to cut and sort your coupons you send us however if you do not have time we will gladly accept what you can send us. We do ask that you remove all staples from the coupons if you utilize staples in your coupon organization practices. If you do not have time, that is okay. But, if you can, that would help us a great deal. We are looking for manufacturer coupons for individual products. They can be from the newspaper, dispensers in grocery stores, tear-pads, and elsewhere as long as they state “Manufacturer’s Coupon” on them. This also includes the printable coupons from the internet. Our Heroes and their families’ stationed overseas can use coupons up to 6 months after their expiration date. You are encouraged to send any coupons you that you will not be using for your savings program. We can only send manufacturer coupons that are less than 4 (four) months expired. THE STATE AND THE NATION Report of the AzFRW Legislative Committee Senate Concurrent Resolution 1034: Arizona Redistricting Is Coming 2020 redistricting is looming before us, and, with news of recent court battles over redistricting maps drawn in States such as Pennsylvania and North Carolina, Arizonans take pride in political pundits’ declarations that Arizona’s congressional and legislative
boundaries are among the least politically skewed in America. For example, in 2017, a statistical analysis by the Associated Press ranked Arizona 4th lowest for the effect of gerrymandering, or “partisan map manipulation,” on congressional districts in the 2016 elections. These election experts attribute that to one fact: “politicians from either party aren’t drawing the lines.” This is the direct result of Arizona voters choosing to create the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) to avoid political, or partisan, control of the redistricting process. But the five-member AIRC, consisting of two Democrats, two Republicans, and the Chairman who is registered as an Independent, has been said to have acted more partisan in recent years. Steven Lynn, the registered Independent who chaired the AIRC from 2001 to 2010, states he believes the most recent 2011 AIRC acted more partisan than ever before given its frequent 3-2 votes. Chairman Lynn advises compromise could better be injected by requiring a super majority vote with a larger number of Commission members appointed. Thus, in this past legislative session, Senate Concurrent Resolution 1034 was introduced to further improve Arizona’s already highly regarded process by increasing the number of AIR Commissioners from the current five to a total of nine – three Democrats, three Republicans, and three Independents. The rationale of the Resolution’s sponsor, Republican Senate President Steve Yarbrough, was to avoid placing so much power in the one Independent, who serves as the Chairman, as occurred in the most recent round of drawing new district boundaries where decisions were made with the two Democrats on one side, the two Republicans on the opposite side, and the one Independent Chairman choosing throughout the process to vote with the Democrats, effectively placing the decision-making power in the hands of one political party. From the beginning, the Resolution encountered opposition from progressive organizations such as Arizona Wins and Arizona Advocacy Network but especially from the National Democratic Redistricting Commission – a group led by former U. S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder’s group invested $75,000 in Arizona to defeat the proposal then sent Holder on a three-day trip to Arizona to meet with progressive groups and liberal candidates and to speak at the Arizona Democratic Party’s recently held Heritage Dinner. The corrective measure ultimately failed when a Republican majority could not be achieved as two Republican Senators, Kate Brophy McGee (R-Central Phoenix) and Bob Worsley (R-Mesa) cast decisive votes against its passage, preventing the measure from being placed on the November ballot to be decided by Arizona voters. House Concurrent Resolution 2007: Providing for General Oversight of the Mandates Imposed by the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission House Concurrent Resolution 2007 will appear on the November ballot and, first, asks Arizona voters to place the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission under the supervision of the Governor’s Regulatory Review Council, a seven member commission that reviews the rules and mandates drafted by and proposed by State agencies to ensure they comply with State law. Of its seven members, six are appointed by Governor and the seventh is appointed by a Governor’s appointee. The resolution, an attempt on the part of Republicans in the Legislature to ensure oversight and statutory compliance on the part of the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission, passed on a strict party-line vote and is scheduled to appear on the November ballot pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed by the Center For Law In The Public Interest seeking to remove it from the ballot. The lawsuit claims the Resolution is unconstitutional. Their bottom line stems from liberals’ dissatisfaction that the Resolution fundamentally alters the independent power of the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission by subordinating its rules to what they claim is the partisan, governor-appointed Governor’s Regulatory Review Council – never mind that all State agencies, when drafting agency Rules which affect mandates and regulations imposed upon Arizona citizens and businesses, must first obtain approval of proposed mandates showing they conform to State law before presenting them to the public. The measure will also ask voters to prevent the Arizona Citizen
Clean Elections Commission from allowing the taxpayer dollars it awards to qualifying candidates to later be funneled by those candidates to their political party or to certain tax-exempt organizations. SB1268 Arizona Senior Citizens Tax Relief Act The Arizona Senior Citizens Tax Relief Act was defeated this session in spite of its goal of permitting
Arizona’s senior citizens aged 65 and older to receive property tax bills based upon 5 percent of their
homes’ value instead of the 10 percent most homeowners pay. The legislation was designed to
protect Arizona’s seniors who have worked hard all their lives from facing foreclosure of their home
when they cannot afford the increasing property tax assessments while living on annual income of
less than $35,000 for an individual or $45,000 for a couple.

If you contact Mary, she can send them an Excel format that will auto-calculate for you! Each one of you contributes hours, on a volunteer basis, to our Republican causes. OUR volunteer hours are
tracked to generate a club total which helps Arrowhead Republican Women earn our outstanding Achievement
Award status every two years! Our numbers are then also added to those of all other clubs in Arizona to create
a combined total for AzFRW. This translates to helping Arizona earn top awards nationally as an outstanding
state. As a past State President, I cannot tell you how proud I was of Arizona’s achievements when I was
accepting those awards on behalf of Arizona at the NFRW Convention!
The achievement awards cycles are tied to conventions which happen every two years in the fall. That is why
there is an odd cut-off date for campaign hours that goes back to last July 1, 2017 and ends on June 30, 2019. I
know you all just worked hard for Congresswoman Debbie Lesko so I want to see some reports for hours!!
This is all on the Honor System so no one is going to scrutinize your report, just do your best. A form is attached
that you can use…or just email them to me and I’ll create a form and track for you! To help you out, the
following MAY be counted as political campaign hours:
All NON PAID campaign activities benefitting the Republican Party, candidates and/or the Federation.
(Club or state newsletter editor hours may be counted in this category). Campaign work done at home
or elsewhere including mailings, phone calls, computer work, social media or blog posts. Work at, or for,
a special campaign event but NOT if you attended as a paid guest OR if you are compensated for the
event. Campaign work at meetings such as getting petitions signed but NOT just attending a club
meeting.
