The untimely death of Dr. Terence N. Thomas (1961-1991), a first year Ob-stetrics and Gynecology Resident at Hurley Hospital of Flint, Michigan inFebruary 1991, led the Thomas family to create an Endowment for otherminority students at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The initial funds were augmented with a $25,000 pledge by Speech hisbrother and leader of the group Arrested Development. The Dr. Terence N. Thomas Memorial Fund, that grants scholarships todeserving students was officially incorporated in September 1996 in thestate of Wisconsin.Graduates from the Medical College of Wisconsin who were beneficiaries

of the Dr. Thomas endowment now practice throughout the United States. And two Milwaukee recipients, Dr. Christopher Webb, an eight yearscholar, completed his fourth year of Residency in Anesthesiology at theUniversity of Columbia Medical School, New York City and graduated inMay 2012 and Angelica Worthy matriculates at the St. Kitts University withsupport from the fund.

The Mission ofthe TNT Schol-arship Fund:“We are com-mitted to iden-tify andsupport schol-arship awardsto studentswho excel; andto continuethat supportthroughouttheir collegeand graduateyears.”

Ernestine O'Bee(1907-2007), thelegendary co-owner and presi-dent of theNorthwest FuneralChapel, was intro-duced to the schol-arship fund as anHonoree, in 2001. She witnessed thereturn of manyscholarship recipi-ents and laterjoined the Board ofDirectors after itsformation. A devotee of edu-cation and sup-porting seriousstudents who ex-celled, she oftenshared her storiesof matriculating atthe University of

Michigan when fewwomen were com-pleting college de-grees. She worked forfamilies to earnextra money forbooks, while manyfamilies pooled re-sources for tal-ented students togo to top ten col-leges and universi-ties. Mrs. O’Bee lovedthe students. Sev-eral knew her per-sonally andbenefitted from heradvice and hergenerosity. Mrs. O’Bee leftone fourth of herestate to the Dr.Thomas Scholar-

ship Fund. This unprece-dented gift has per-mitted currentstudents to receivean increase in theirannual stipends. A few years ago,the stipend was$1500, for the lastfive years it hasbeen $ 2000 fullawards and $ 1000Honorable MentionAwards. The increase hasbeen directly tiedwith the economyand increasing tu-ition costs. Over $ 800,000was given to stu-dents from thecommunity, todate.

They are eating “fresh,” active inpolitics, exercising and partying. Our readers find us in print, with our twice-weekly editions in tenured retail outlets, churches and selective distribution spots.
