Brighten Your Day – March 2020 The Beauty of Spring Captured in Dance

We Are the World: Historic Anthem from 1985 Rings True Today

Lionel Richie Thinks It's Time to Bring Back 'We Are the World' for Coronavirus Victims

People magazine – In March 1985, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross

and more than 40 other A-list recording artists came together to sing “We Are the World.” The cause:

African famine. The sales: $63 million. The chorus: “There’s a choice we’re making, we’re saving our own

lives.”

Those words became part of a unifying, legendary anthem. Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic,

and the 35th anniversary of the release of the hit song, that chorus is on Richie’s mind today…This moment

of crisis has made him stop — and step back for a wider look. “What happened in China, in Europe, it came

here. So if we don’t save our brothers there, it’s going to come home. It’s all of us. All of us are in this

together,” he says…

Someday…We're all in it together: Song by Julian Lennon

Interview with Julian Lennon on his new release “Someday” feat. Steven Tyler (4/10/2013)

IndieStardust – Excerpt from the interview: We

were trying to consider a ‘Hopeful’ outlook and

realized that, in every way shape & form, we all

really felt the same & that ‘Someday’ one way or

another, we would all have to come together…

whether by our own process/demise, or by

natural events…

Music to Raise Your Spirits

Global Love Song Performed Entirely by Children

One World, One Heart Beating…

Four Languages, Three Continents, One World…One World, One Heart Beating is an anthem to global unity

sung and played – and with a video created – entirely by children. It is an invitation to kids and grownups

all over to act and live with tolerance, harmony, and hope.

“All it takes is one person to believe in a young man or woman”

'America's Got Talent' host Terry Crews awards Detroit Youth Choir the golden buzzer

receiving the golden buzzer for its performance on NBC's "America's Got Talent." The Detroit Youth Choir

is a local nonprofit composed of youth ages 8-18 that teaches and develops students through music

education and dance…

Crews welcomed the group, drawing attention to choir director Anthony White…White, who has directed

the choir for 21 years, said the mission is to show that "young people from Detroit can be somebody."

"We're here to let the world know we have some beautiful young people in the city of Detroit," White said

Bridge Over Troubled Water: Aretha Gets Kudos from Paul Simon

Paul Simon on Aretha Franklin's version of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'

Los Angeles Times - Los Angeles, CA – Like millions of other music fans, Paul Simon had Aretha Franklin on

his mind Aug. 31, on the day of her star-studded memorial service in Detroit. He spoke softly as he

reflected on her rendition of his spiritually minded pop-rock classic, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,”

frequently cited among her greatest recordings…

More on Aretha’s version of the song

Aretha's Version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (short video)

Emory University – Poet Kevin Young, Atticus Haygood Professor of English and Creative Writing, talks

about Aretha Franklin's soulful version (1971) of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (1969). He

describes the hymn-like aspect of the song and its use of language in describing a primal landscape of

rivers, bridges, crossings and connections.

The stories behind 5 of Aretha Franklin's biggest songs (inc. videos of Aretha performing each one)

CNN Entertainment – With her powerhouse voice, Aretha Franklin could make any song an event. The late

singer drew from a range of inspirations -- her life, her loves, her faith -- to bring passion to every verse.

When she sang it, you believed it. Behind every great song is a story…

“Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1971) – Franklin grew up singing gospel at her father's church in Detroit,

so "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was right in her wheelhouse. She slowed the song down, funked it up a

little, added an organ and brought out its inherent gospel roots…"Paul says he heard the phrase 'Bridge

Over Troubled Water' sung as a Baptist riff," Garfunkel told Rolling Stone after Franklin's death. "I took it to

mainstream radio. Then Aretha so brilliantly brought it back to church."

Mr. White, all it takes is one person to believe

in a young man or woman to reach their dreams.

And you are that man, sir!

Terry Crews, AGT Host

of my songs that anyone ever did

Movies with a Message Rising to Heights Beyond Expectations

October Sky based the book: Rocket Boys: A Memoir by Homer Hickam

This buoyant movie shows the triumph of the spirit amid a young man's quest to find his true destiny

Spirituality & Practice –This wonderful movie takes off with a bang and soars upwards: it will lift your

spirit and make you feel good about all those who pursue their dreams in the face of large

obstacles…Following the Soviet launch of the satellite named Sputnik, Homer Hickam, a mediocre high

school student, is inspired to build a rocket…

October Sky presents a rounded portrait of life in a small West Virginia town where the options available to

most of the young men are very limited. Homer's grand rocket project gives wings to his dream of another

life. The universality of this young man's quest resonates with our own yearning to find our true destiny.

Playing for Change

This song says no matter who you are, no matter where you go in your life,

at some point you’re going to need somebody to stand by you.

The Soloist: The power of friendship across class and racial lines

Movie Review: The Soloist

The Mental Health Clinician – The Soloist is a 2009 American film based on the true

story of Nathaniel Ayers, a Juilliard musical prodigy who has schizophrenia. The film

is set in Los Angeles, California where an L.A. Times writer, Steve Lopez, has his life

changed forever.

The story begins featuring Lopez at his job frustrated with a dose of writer's block.

He is unable to find a lead or story captivating enough for his column and to save his

job. As a result, he goes looking around the streets of L.A. for inspiration. While

looking, he runs into Ayers who is homeless and making very little eye contact,

speaking hurriedly, and repeating phrases about unrelated topics—winters in

Cleveland, how he feels about the composer, Beethoven, and playing the cello. Almost

immediately, Lopez believes he has found his story, and Ayers believes he has found a friend. They become

acquainted and nevertheless inseparable as their unique relationship begins to develop…

Sometimes you just can't listen to what anybody else says, you just got to listen inside.

Turn your eyes to the sky and watch what happens when everything you believe in soars.

Nature to Soothe Your Soul Spring is Just Ahead!

Capture that Springtime Optimism

PsychCentral – Spring is the season of new growth, and the signs of change are all around us. Flowers

smatter parks and lawns, the days are longer, brighter and warmer, and our emotions are lifted by the

extra light and raised temperature. Springtime is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life being born,

and of the cycle of life once again starting. It is also seen more generally as the start of better times. At this

time of year we begin to feel less sluggish, and become more open to inviting changes – both big and small –

into our lives.

Spring has always been considered as a time for change and personal evolution, and another common way

to embrace the sense of optimism and enthusiasm is to have a good old clear-out… Ultimately spring is all

about opportunity – a time for cultivating the qualities of courage and optimism, of strengthening the belief

in ourselves and our powers to achieve and overcome obstacles – the greatest of which is perhaps our own

fear, which prevents us from taking risks and stepping into the unknown.

Aging: Truly a State-of-Mind for These Role Models

Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Leroy "Satchel" Paige

Fans of this year’s men’s college basketball tournament were captivated by the appearance of 98-year old

Sister Jean, the chaplain of the Loyola-Chicago basketball team. Her story, along with those of 111-year

old Richard Overton and 99-year old Phil Coyne, speak volumes to the secrets of continued engagement

with life no matter what your age!

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt

Sister Jean shines as Final Four star: 'This is the most fun I’ve had in my life' (inc. video)

Chicago Tribune – The 98-year-old Loyola team chaplain was the celebrity of Friday’s Final Four media

news conferences. Actually, who are we kidding? She’s the celebrity of the tournament. “I walked by (and)

thought it looked like Tom Brady at the Super Bowl,” Loyola coach Porter Moser said...

Love the Sister Jean story? Take a cue from Loyola players on how to treat the elderly (inc. video)

Chicago Tribune – Loyola’s basketball players’ hearts raced as they sprinted toward the fan section at

Philips Arena in Atlanta... They had just made it official that they were headed to the Final Four — one of

the biggest moments of their young lives. It was Saturday night. It was time to party...But then each player

spotted 98-year-old Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt smiling and soaking in the scene as a sea of maroon-and-

gold confetti clustered around her wheelchair. They paused...

Richard Overton

On the cusp of 112, a whirlwind tour for World War II’s oldest veteran

Washington Post - Washington, DC – Richard Overton, the grandson of a slave, worked in a furniture store

and as a courier for decades until he finally retired when he was 85. That was more than 25 years ago...

Last week, he mentioned to one of his visitors that he’d like to someday see the National Museum of African

American History and Culture in the District. The following morning, Overton and a few friends were on a

private jet heading toward the nation’s capital. They got a private tour of the museum before it opened to

the public Sunday morning.

...On Sunday, Richard Overton said it was meaningful

for him to see the museum and the African American

story through time: from his grandfather’s history as

a slave to his own history as an African American

fighter in World War II and then the pride of the first

African American president…

Phil Coyne, Pirates Usher Since the Great Depression, Retires at 99

New York Times – Three ballparks. Fourteen presidential administrations. Eighty-one years. That’s how

long it’s been since Phil Coyne became an usher for the Pittsburgh Pirates... “After 81 years you better get

something better than a watch,” he said. “In my time here, and I’ve been here for 11 seasons, he never

“I think having a uniform and a job and a place to go and people to see, I think that’s kept him really

healthy,” said Dan Coyne, Phil Coyne’s 47-year-old nephew, who refers to his uncle as “Philly.” “You never

Advancing Peace and Justice: Muhammad Ali & Thomas Merton

Two men from vastly different backgrounds and religions shared deep beliefs in the loving and honoring

the dignity of all humanity. Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) was a heavyweight boxing champion and world

ambassador. In 2005, Ali was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush

“for his lifetime of achievement and for his principled service to mankind.” Thomas Merton (1915-1968)

was a Trappist monk who became a social activist. In his 2015 address to a joint session of Congress, Pope

Francis referred to Merton as “a promoter of peace between peoples and religions.”

As described in the following op-ed by Lonnie Ali, the legacies of Ali and Merton are forever linked together

at the intersection of two streets in Louisville, Kentucky.

Op-Ed by Lonnie Ali

What Thomas Merton and Muhammad Ali Had in Common

The New York Times – It is the convergence of their message of faith that bears noting as we mark what

would have been Muhammad’s 75th birthday on Jan. 17. Over time, Muhammad’s deep, evolving devotion

to God, whom as a Muslim he called Allah, came to be rooted in his love of all people. Boxing had taken him

around the world and it opened his eyes to the beauty in diversity. Akin to Merton’s revelation,

Muhammad was fond of saying, “the key to a man’s soul is in his heart.”

“Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams — they all have different names, but they all

contain water. Just as religions do — they all contain truths.”

Muhammad Ali

“In Louisville, at the corner of Fourth and Walnut, in the center of the shopping

district, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that I loved all these people,

that they were mine and I theirs, that we could not be alien to one another even

though we were total strangers. It was like waking from a dream of separateness, of

spurious self-isolation in a special world.

Community Action, Inc. – Topeka, KS – A series of Community Action profiles reflecting each person’s

dedication to fighting poverty. The photos with accompanying stories provide recognition to board and

staff and help bring together all the “pieces” of Community Action working to fulfill the overall mission.

Community Action, Inc.’s #MissionMoment profiles have been appearing throughout the month of May to

celebrate Community Action Month. Staff and board are encouraged to share the posts on their own

Facebook timelines to help extend the agency’s reach. Feedback has been incredible and individuals

profiled have received great community support. Mission Moments will continue to be collected

throughout the year in preparation for next May. A collection of the profiles is being created, which can be

re-purposed as hallway posters, presentation inserts, and legislative postcards.
