(Russia / 2019 / Directed by Kantemir Balagov)

During World War II in Leningrad, the siege of the city is finally over, but life and deathstruggles continue in the wreckage that remains. Two young women search for meaningand hope during their struggle to rebuild their lives amongst the ruins.

This year's Russian entry for the Best International Feature at the Oscars arrives havingalready scored a directing award for filmmaker Kantemir Balagov at Cannes. Iya, or Beanpole,is a nurse at a hospital for wounded veterans in St. Petersburg at the tail end of WWII. A quietand gangly figure still suffering the effects of a concussion sustained in the war, she cares forher patients with stoic resolve while looking after a young boy for whom she has a mysteriousobligation. When another woman, Masha, shows up at the hospital, we begin to understandhow past events motivate Iya and tie the characters together. A character drama exploringthe manifestations of PTSD in a social climate of repression, BEANPOLE takes a sensitive andincisive approach to its two female protagonists. Offering more than just a portrait of misery,it provides a female perspective on the early stages of healing from the traumas of war.

"Not only is BEANPOLE one of the first essential cinematic works released in theaters thisyear, it is also among the most involving character studies in recent memory." -MattFagerholm, RogerEbert.com

Varda By Agnès

February 21 - 27:Fri-Sat 3:00Sun 5:30Tues 5:40Thur 5:40

(France / 2019 / Directed by Agnès Varda)

In this autobiographical documentary, we join beloved Belgian-born French auteur AgnèsVarda (CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, VAGABOND, THE GLEANERS & I, FACES PLACES) as she revisitsmoments from her extensive and influential body of work.

We know Agnès Varda from her contribution to the world of French New Wave, as well asfeminist cinema, but it is her curiosity of spirit and willingness to experiment that made hersuch a compelling voice. VARDA BY AGNÈS, her final film before her death, is like a cinematicscrapbook in which we find the filmmaker exploring feelings on her own identity and what itmeans to be an artist. Varda takes us on a tour through her photography, films, artinstallations, and meaningful personal experiences, as she resurrects old memories andshares wisdom from a long, rich life of creativity and exploration - all on her own terms, fromher own distinct and playful point of view. The film is "both an excellent primer fornewcomers, and a wonderful parting gift for longtime fans (...) The perfect way for thelegendary auteur to have the last word." (David Elrich, IndieWire)

Vagabond

February 22, 23, & 26:Sat 5:20Sun 8:10Wed 8:10

(France / 1985 / Directed by Agnès Varda)

Agnes Varda's VAGABOND is a stunner that was hailed as one of the great films of the1980s by critics and film juries alike.

Sandrine Bonnaire won the Best Actress César for her portrayal of the defiant young drifterMona who lives on the road as the film's French title proclaims "Sans Toit ni Loi" without roofnor rule. She's found frozen to death in a ditch at the beginning of the film. How she endedup there is what we piece together as Varda tells Mona's bleak story through flashbacksrelated by dozens of people who encountered her, producing a nonlinear, splintered portraitof an enigmatic and fiercely individualistic young woman. In French with English subtitles.

Parasite

February 21 - 27:Fri-Sat 8:10Sun 5:35Mon-Tue 8:10Wed 5:15Thur 8:10

(South Korea / 2019 / Directed by Bong Joon-Ho)

Academy Awards Big Winner (director, picture, screenplay, international)! Also took theCannes Film Fest's top prize, the Palme D'or, here's a film its director calls "a comedywithout clowns and a tragedy without villains," a film that keeps us delightfully off balanceas it mixes pathos and satire with thrills and drama as it nails the dichotomy between thestruggling poor and the wildly rich.

A vertical story of class struggle - meet the moldy basement dwelling Kims: Ki-taek (SongKang-ho) an unemployed husband and father; his hard-working wife Chung-sook (ChangHyae-jin), his clever twenty-something daughter Ki-jung (Park So-dam), and his teenaged sonKi-woo (Choi Woo-shik). And then there's the Park family living in a fabulous airy house withtheir teenage daughter Da-hye and terribly spoiled young son Da-song, who has suffered achildhood trauma that occasionally causes him to exhibit strange behavior. Due to anunexpected stroke of luck and some clever moves, Ki-woo is hired by the Parks to be theprivate English tutor of Da-hye, and soon figures out how to get his sister hired as an arttherapist. Before long all the Kims are inside the Park's bastion of privilege as the destinies ofthe two families become interlaced. As they become enmeshed, the film takes us on afascinating ride that culminates in a powerful and utterly original outcome. In Korean withsubtitles.
