Traditionalists will want to check out the Tyee Club of BC located on Spit Road. It began in 1924 with a group of anglers who returned to Campbell River each year in pursuit of the elusive Tyee, a Chinook salmon, 30 pounds or larger. Tyee fi shing is done quietly in a small, classic row boat. No motors are allowed in the Tyee pool. The rower will slip the boat into the currents and eddies while keeping a basic plug or spoon beating in the current. If a fi sh is boated and weighs 30 pounds or more, the catch is recorded and the angler becomes a member of the Tyee Club.

  • The Campbell River is a user-friendly river to experience the joy of catch and release. Fish for trout year round and pink salmon later in the summer. The main fi shing spots are easy to reach and the sandy pool sees anglers of all ages congregate and jockey for position to cast out lures or fl ies. Where the Quinsam River enters the

Campbell at times will have a heavy concentration of anglers. Between the bridges, is where most of the action takes place. In late September, the coho will be running and offers big action on a drift or fl y rod. During the summer, Echo Lake can be fi shed with a fl y or lure. Echo Lake is stocked twice a year with catchable sized trout.

  • HikingCanyon View Trail (6 kms) This is a well maintained loop trail that winds along the banks of the Campbell River. One highlight is an 80 foot suspension walkway that spans the canyon and offers spectacular views of rapids and spawning salmon.

Lady Falls (1 km) This easy 20 minute round trip walk to the falls is just past the Buttle Lake Campground on Highway 28. At the end of the path is a viewing platform directly across from the falls that receives some mist from the falls.

Lower Myra Falls (1 km) Beautiful cascading waterfalls are the reward at the end of this short hike. You can climb up and down the falls and swim in some of the calmer pools. Travel Highway 28 and take Westmin Road south to the Lower Myra Falls parking lot.

Quinsam River Trail (2 kms) The trail starts at the playground area in the Elk Falls campground and follows the Quinsam River upstream. The Quinsam Salmon Hatchery is approximately 2 km from the campground.

Bedwell Lake Trail (about 4 hours) Located in Strathcona Provincial Park this day use trail has an elevation gain of 600 metres. It ascends through a steep forested valley with some stairs and bridge crossings. At the top is a subalpine area with two lakes. Beware of the presence of black bears in this area. Access the trailhead from the south end of Buttle Lake.

Crest Mountain Trail (10 kms) This physically demanding trail is steep with an elevation change of 1300 metres, but the views of Kings Peak and Elkhorn Mountain make it well worth the effort. To get to the trailhead follow Highway 28. Open 7 days a week M-F 8-8 Sat & Sun 9-6G-2116 S. Island Hwy., Willow Point

  • Stra cona ParkStrathcona Park is the largest and oldest provincial park on Vancouver Island founded in 1911. The park is home to the highest peaks of the Vancouver Island Ranges. From the Golden Hinde to Mount Albert Edward, people come from all over the world to explore this outdoor mecca.

For beginners seeking that fi rst toe hold to seasoned veterans pushing their limits, the park offers topography that ranges from inviting to downright scary.

The main access to the Park is via Highway 28. The main access route to Forbidden Plateau from Courtenay and Campbell River is via the Paradise Meadows Trailhead at Mount Washington.

Crest Creek Crag is another favourite. The local climbing community maintains the routes regularly offering expert climbs and some routes for beginners. The Crest Creek climbing area is located near Crest Lake and Crest Creek on Hwy 28 (to Gold River).

There are 19 crags with names like Black Crag, Pipeline Bluff, Narcissus Wall and Skid Row. Gravel roads and short hiking trails from the parking lot lead climbers to the crags. Combine the crags and there are over 100 different climbing routes.

  • Bursts of moonlight bouncing off a rippling lake, campfi re sparks rising on the heat like miniature fi reworks, kids turning marshmallows into fl aming balls of sugar summer camping is great just about anywhere. Here its awesome. In the lake dotted hills west of Campbell River there are more campgrounds than you can explore in a lifetime. A good place to start is Elk Falls Provincial Park where a thundering waterfall, an extensive network of forest trails and the nearby Quinsam salmon hatchery make it one of the best campground accommodations in the Salmon Capital of the World.

CampingJust two kms from downtown it provides quiet riverside camping. After a morning fi shing, pack a picnic lunch and take a cool stroll to the Elk Falls day-use area and wander through the only signifi cant stand of old-growth Douglas fi r north of MacMillan Provincial Park. Other more remote camp grounds that should be high on your list of options include Loveland Bay and Morton Lake. For more information of the area campgrounds, and to reserve a spot well ahead of time, go to: www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks and follow the fi nd a park prompts at the right hand top of the home page.

Campbell River is the gateway to the Discovery Islands group, an unparalleled paddling area. Theres nothing quite like a saltwater kayak for exploring remote islands and uninhabited coves.

This quiet mode of travel often allows you to get closer to marine and land wildlife than if you were on foot or in a motorized craft. Bring your own kayak or rent one from a local shop, lessons and guides are available.

You can chart your own journey or sign up for an eco-tour. Canoeing is also popular-the Sayward Forest Canoe/portage route is a 50 kilometre (30 mile) circuit encompassing 11 lakes, and takes approximately 3-4 days to complete the full circuit. We recommend doing the route counter-clockwise from summer to early fall. Numerous B.C. Forest Service Recreation sites are located along the route that provide adequate overnight camping facilities. Popular put-in spots are: The Campbell River Spit, Gosling Bay on Campbell Lake, Morton Lake, Strathcona Dam, Loveland Bay, Forbes Landing and McIvor Lake.

Stand up paddle boarding is also a fun, relaxing way to play on the water. So get out there and enjoy nature!

Get onto Highway 28 and turn onto the Duncan Bay Main and cross the Campbell River. Youll fi nd one trailhead just south of the intersection of Duncan Bay and Iron River Road and another located west of Duncan Bay Road on Iron Bay Road. The Snowden Demonstration Forest west of Campbell River and north of Highway 28 near Loveland Bay Provincial Park offers more than 30kms of trails suited to all levels of expertise and includes the Frog Lake and Lost Lake trail systems. Trails are usually 2 to 8 kms and frequently intertwine. Some of the easier routes follow old rail beds that have been rehabilitated as recreational trails. Beginners should check out the Beaver Lodge Lands near the North Island College campus. Old rail grades, logging roads and hiking tracks make for an enjoyable tour through tall trees.

  • Shoreline tsThis summer marks 20 years since Max Chickite carved Octi, the octopus out of a piece of driftwood. One mans imagination is now a fi ve day competition, featuring up to 30 carvers creating works of art out of raw cedar logs. Every year in June, large logs are delivered to Frank James Park in Willow Point. The carvers meet up to review the rules and safety requirements, and to choose their logs. The howl of the chainsaws starts and lasts until 7 pm, and eager spectators often visit daily to see what emerges.By the weekend, most of the logs are almost completely transformed into whatever the carvers have imagined. On the Saturday, there is a quick carve contest where carvers have an hour to transform smaller logs, and the results are then auctioned off to the public, with the carver sharing in the proceeds. On the Sunday, most carvings are painted and varnished, and ready for judging. The public gets to vote for their favourite as well, but our expert consultants (professional carvers themselves), make the decision as to which carvings win the cash prizes in each category. Sunday is also the day of the raffl e. First prize is The Pick of The Park the winner gets to choose whichever carving they prefer. Remaining carvings then are adopted by sponsoring companies or individuals to enjoy. So if you would like a carving, either buy the winning raffl e ticket, be the most generous sponsor for second choice, or buy a quick-carve at auction!

  • Theres nothing like a short ferry ride across Discovery Passage to transport you to a magical dimension in West Coast living. Welcome to Quadra Island and its neighbour Cortes Island just beyond. The measure of isolation these communities enjoy infuses them with unique characters and characteristics. Eclectic old timers, artists and artisans, First Nations people, retired and young families all share a pride of community and embrace a quality of stewardship that rubs off on all who visit.Quadra Island boasts crystal clear waters, spectacular scenery and sandy beaches attracting many to Rebecca Spit for day picnics or overnight camping. Kayaking, beach-combing, swimming, nature hikes, snorkeling Quadra also offers an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through lush rainforest and up exquisite moss-covered bluffs. Visitors are drawn to the many special events and ceremonies during the year at the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre where the heritage and history of the We-Wai-Kai Band is vibrant and alive. Both Quathiaski Cove and Heriot Bay have a good selection of stores and services for

visitors including groceries, pharmacy, post offi ce, liquor store, banking, gas station, guide outfi tters, gift shops, rentals, pubs, cafs, restaurants, and public docks.Visitors on foot should check out the water taxi from Painters Lodge just north of Campbell River to April Point Lodge.Cortes Island This jewel is just a 40-minute ferry crossing from Quadra through idyllic islands surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks.Cortes Island is covered by forest, blessed with sandy beaches, sunshine and a temperate climate. The islands central location at the top of Georgia Straight puts it right in the middle of a naturally occurring rain shadow. Warmer air and water temperatures make for great summertime swimming at Hague Lake, Smelt Bay Provincial Park, or on the sweeping sandy beaches of nearby Marina Island. Accommodation includes provincial and private campgrounds, cabins, and motels. There are restaurants, cafs, grocery stores and banking at Mansons Landing, Gorge Harbour and Squirrel Cove. For more information go to: quadraisland.ca and cortesisland.com.
