e hunt is on for salmon and herring and when the bait is found, the shing begins. Matt Conelley from Courtenay also hunts down the salmon and will o en get out to water that was shed commercially years ago and will have good catch reports. e herring showed up at Qualicum Beach just last week and the word spreads rapidly to the shing community. Fishermen can limit out at Shelter Point and the area around Denman Island has had good catch reports coming in lately. I recently spoke with Dan Fear at the Kelsey Bay RV Campground and a group from the Courtenay area who had been out shing reported battling tide. Fishing was slow but prawns were great. ere are a number of commercial shermen in the Campbell River area who sh for a living and are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to giving out shing tips. When it comes to setting out prawn or crab traps, most sporties will sh in the same depth of water

usually around 350 feet of water. Andr Poulin shes deeper in depths of close to 650 feet of water. Crabbing is better and crabs have harder shells and are moving from 120 feet of water to 80.Deanna Collins from Royal Lepage Advance Realty has given me an update to the Fishing Derby in Campbell River June 11. ere have been inquiries from out of province asking if the derby is open to them and yes it sure is. e rst prize is $5,000 dollars

and there will be prizes for the top 10 sh caught. With the amount of donations received from the business community, there will be a silent auction table set up for the public to bid on. ere will be music and kids events at the log house at Robert Ostler Park. ere is lots of dock space at Discovery Marina. e entry fee is $40 and can be paid online at crsalmonderby.comMy next y tying open house will be at the Campbell River Library on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1-3 p.m. Its free and open to everyone. Trout shing has been slow but warmer weather is coming and I had a chance to test the waters at Echo Lake and caught trout that were 29 cms and they were biting on my size 8 pheasant tail and body y. ere was very little action on the surface but I was near the eastern area of the lake where the big trout carry overs from last year splashed and vanished. Another 650 trout will be planted in May and by that time the lake turnover will have happened and all can have good shing.

Important Things To Remember While Fishing:

1. A tidal water shing licence is required for any species of nned sh or shell sh.

2. A salmon conservation stamp must be af xed to licences held by anglers, both adults and juvenile, wishing to retain any species of paci c salmon.

3. Barbless hooks are required for all salmon, cutthroat trout and steelhead.

4. Both single and treble barbless hooks are acceptable except in the tidal portion of The Fraser.

5. Check size and daily limits for the species of salmon you are intending to catch.

6. The total daily limit for all species of Paci c Salmon from tidal waters and non-tidal waters combined is four(4).

7. The posession limit for Chinook is two(2). The total Chinook annual limit from all tidal waters is thirty(30).

8. Record in ink all Chinooks retained on your licence.

9. Unless otherwise speci ed, all Chinook must measure from 45 cm or more from tip of nose to fork of tail. Straight of Georgia waters is 62 cm. All Coho, Sockeye, Pink and Chum must measure 30 cm or more.

10. Check to determine if the area you intend to sh are open. Expect in-season changes to the regulations in the BC Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Guide.

Proof of operator comptency.

An approved Personal Floatation Device (PFD) or lifejacket of appropriate size foreveryone on board.

A buoyant heaving line at least 15m in length.

A manual propelling device (oar) or anchor with not less than 15m of rope, cable or chain.

A sound-signaling device.

A water-tight ashlight or three Canadian-approved ares of type A, B, or C.

A bailer or bilge pump with enough hose to pump from the bilge of the vessel over the side.

A class 5 BC re extinguisher for boats with inboard engines, xed fuel tanks or cooling and/or heating appliances.
