Graduation Remarks from President Gordon Oliver(Edited from full original speech)

Congratulations to the Class of 2012!

On behalf of our Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations, I welcome you to the Saint John’s Alumni Association and I congratulate you for being the first class in our school’s history to be offered a record $7.2 million in college scholarships and for also being the first alumni class ever to have 100% par ticipation in the Alumni Annual Fund Campaign.

To the parents of our graduates: Thank you for sharing your children with us and for entrusting their secondary education to Saint John’s. I remarked recently to senior parent Mr. Kenneth Leiter that we have enjoyed having Matt with us and I have especially enjoyed watching him play baseball this spring. I asked Mr. Leiter if he has any more children to share with us and he said he didn’t but added that he did have grandchildren. He said he would recommend Saint John’s to other families. We like to hear that! Word of mouth is one of our strongest marketing tools.

To the class of 2012: You are tomorrow’s leaders. I do not know specifically what that will mean for you. I do not have a crystal ball to see into the future, but I do know that you will need to embrace and develop leadership skills that will guide and direct our country forward. Each of you will develop your own style of leadership and the skills necessary to accomplish your tasks and goals. You will be tasked with solving challenges that my generation of baby boomers have been unable to resolve. In addition, there will be other challenges I am sure that have not yet bubbled up to the surface.

To somewhat paraphrase Forrest Gump, “life is like a box of chocolates, we never know what we are going to get.”

On the question of leadership: Are leaders born or made? There have been endless books and ar ticles devoted to this very question. Winston Churchill was a great war time leader and the people knew this, but in peace time he was not the people’s choice to lead.

Dwight D. Eisenhower said of leadership, “You do not lead by hitting people over the head. That’s assault, not leadership.” He also said, “I would rather try to persuade a man to go along because once I have persuaded him, he will stick. If I scold him, he will only stay as long as he is scolded, then he is gone.” And leadership is the ar t of getting someone else to do something you want done because they want to do it.”

Teddy Roosevelt, a little more heavy handed was given credit for invoking his foreign policy leadership style, “walk softly and carry a big stick.”

In my career development over the past 35 years, I have worked for some truly inspirational Headmasters who have served as role models and mentors.

One par ticular Headmaster I worked for was a strong proponent of the “service” or “servant” leadership model where one leads by example and rolls up one’s shir t sleeves and pitches in to help. Although not always successful, I have tried to emulate this model.

Each of you as tomorrow’s leaders will develop your own styles of effective leadership. One thing I have learned over time is to find a good role model and to learn by listening and inquiry. And when you do become leaders, whether it’s in the entrepreneurial area, education, civil service, or any one of a myriad of professions, please try to remember to always be civil, polite, and respectful in your dealings with others as you have been while at Saint John’s.

One final thought: At Mass recently, our pastor Father Mar tin delivered a homily that tied the theme of service into the readings. At the conclusion of his homily, father shared with the congregation that a friend of his, an Episcopal priest, had erected a sign at the back of the Church so parishioners would see it as they exited out. It read, “The service has ended, now service begins.”

And so I say to the Class of 2012 as you exit Saint John’s as students becoming alumni, “The service has ended, now service begins.”

From the PrincipalChristopher CosentinoIt is with great pleasure that I write to all of you. As of this writing we are gearing up and preparing for the 2012-2013 school year. Only a few shor t months ago we said goodbye to the Class of 2012 at our Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises. As par t of my remarks for the graduating seniors, I shared with them what the late Steve Jobs said at the commencement exercises at Stanford University in 2005. In his remarks Mr. Jobs said, “Follow your Hear t; when I was 17, I read a quote that went something like, ‘If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most cer tainly be right.’” Mr. Jobs goes on to say, “Since then I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, if today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Your time is limited…don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your hear t and intuition…everything else is secondary.” I truly believe these young women and men will take that advice and go on to accomplish great things.

We are so pleased that our families continue to par tner with us in the education of their children. We anticipate star ting the year with our Mass of the Holy Spirit where we will induct our newest members of our Student Government Association. This will also provide an oppor tunity for the entire school community to sign our Code of Conduct, wherein we all pledge to live our school’s mission every day. As we get closer to the fall, we excitedly anticipate the move to our new location in Buckeystown to star t the second semester.

This school year promises to be exciting and I look forward to all of us making fond memories.

Mary Cella Santangelo Rice, class of 1933, passed away in her home at Buckingham’s Choice in Frederick, MD on November 16. She was born on January 1, 1917 in Frederick. Mary was the wife of the late Donald B. Rice, Sr. who was a former Mayor of Frederick, a local business leader, and founder of the Donald B. Rice Tire Company. Mary was a lifetime member of St. John the Evangelist R.C.C., of Frederick, and later attended St. Joseph-on-Carrollton Manor R.C.C. after moving to Buckingham’s Choice. She was a Silver Member of the Catholic Daughters, a founding member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxilary, and

past president of the Frederick Women’s Civic Club. Mary was the valedictorian of her graduating class of 1933 at Saint John’s. She has three sons who also share a long history with Saint John’s - Donald B. Rice, Jr. ‘57, James R. Rice ‘58, and Kenneth W. Rice, who attended Saint John’s. In 1992, The Donald B. Rice, Sr. Scholarship Fund was established to help deserving students attend Saint John’s. Until a few years ago, Mary would attend many school activities, especially the Scholarship Assemblies on campus. The Rice family made a lead gift to the Legacy Campaign for the new school campus where four Math/Technology Classrooms and a Math/Science/Technology Seminar Room will be named for The Donald B. Rice Family.

Planned Giving

“Philanthropy has the potential to inspire a personal legacy and allow us to leave a lasting mark.” Charles W. Collier, Senior Philanthropic Advisor at Harvard University.

As you may know, many non-profi t organizations – including Saint John’s Catholic Prep, rely on charitable donations and planned giving strategies implemented by generous donors to help fund operations and support the organization’s long-term fi nancial needs. Planned gifts of life insurance, appreciated holdings, charitable trusts, and bequests are among the many ways to support the future of Saint John’s. Planned gifts are strategic charitable contributions that can provide the donor with important tax benefi ts now and in the future.

An attractive planned giving strategy is donating appreciated stock or other securities. Many taxpayers may have appreciated stock that would be ripe for donation. This strategy offers an immediate income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities and avoids capital gains taxes.

There are many other planned giving options that offer a wide array of immediate and long-term tax benefi ts, which is a great way to reduce your tax burden while helping your charity of choice. We encourage you to please consider Saint John’s. Please check with your fi nancial advisor to see what works best for you.

SJCP Presents Donor Recognition Gift to Major Donors

This past school year, President Gordon Oliver presented a donor recognition gift to the following donors in appreciation for their generosity to the Legacy Campaign: John and Karen O’Boyle, parents of alumnae Allison ‘08 and Lauren ‘11; Pat and Molly Crowley, parents of Kelly (class of 2012) and Colleen (class of 2015); Rick and Michele Rogers, parents of Taylor (class of 2012) and son Bailey (class of 2015); and to Jack and Betty McShea who are wonderful friends to the Saint John’s School community. Jack and Betty are also close friends to the Truxillo family and consider themselves grandparents to Alexis Truxillo (class of 2012). The Legacy Campaign funding will help suppor t the construction of the new school campus. Saint John’s is sincerely grateful to these families for their suppor t.

Remembering Two Wonderful Alumnae Who Were Very Special Gifts to the

Saint John’s Family

Mrs. Lois Ann Lipps Edwards lost her two and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, January 14. The oldest child of the late Alton and Louise Lipps of Frederick, Lois graduated from St. John’s Literary Institute in 1954 and St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, MD in 1958. She married Albert Edwards in 1959 - they have three children and four grandchildren. Al’s career took them to San Francisco, CA, Frederick, MD, Newark, DE, Belle Meade, NJ, Cincinnati, OH, Yardley, PA, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Australia and Dallas, TX. They resettled in Frederick in 1998. Al served on the Board of Trustees for Saint John’s Catholic Prep from 2003 to

2009. Lois was a full-time homemaker and mother. In addition to her husband, Lois is survived by her three children and their spouses, four grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, a great-niece and a host of dear friends, cousins, and neighbors.

Lois was a devoted volunteer where she enjoyed serving as president of the Montgomery, Ohio Women’s Club, a religious educator and lector at various parishes, and a Meals on Wheels visitor. Beyond her volunteer work, she began an interest in writing while in college. In 1957, she won an Atlantic Monthly Contest and had a dramatic monologue published in the magazine. She won additional writing competitions throughout her life. An avid reader, she par ticipated in several book discussion groups and loved dance. As a child she was a student at the Evelyn White School of Dance and as an adult she studied at various studios located in places she lived including Tom Waters’ Ar tistic Dance Centre and Dance Unlimited. Lois also loved her close friendships that were formed with her fellow alums from St. John’s.

Saint John’s Catholic Prep has lost two great

friends indeed. May they continue

to watch over us from the heavens above.

Another Successful Year for The Booster Club

The SJCP Booster Club was formed to help supplement the current athletic budget through a variety of fundraisers and to also promote the SJCP athletic program. It has been another successful year raising over $16,847 through the membership drive, concession sales, the BBQ Bash, golf tournament, apparel sales, and general donations. Also, the Booster Club worked the beer garden at the Swinetastic BBQ Festival in June. Over two days, many SJCP parents, staff, and coaches volunteered their time to help raise money for the Booster Club. The monies raised from the Swinetastic will be applied to the 2012-2013 school year.

The Booster Club fundraising efforts throughout the 2011-2012 school year provided much needed items for the athletic programs, which included: • Cross Country Uniforms • Track Stopwatch and Printer system• Girls’ Basketball Tournament • Girls’ Lacrosse Tournaments• Boys’ Basketball Tournaments • Scoreboard repairs in the Gym• New Volleyball Power-lite System • Gym/Field Maintenance• Defibrillator for Athletic • Fall Pep Rally Training Department • Softball Field improvements • Baseball/Softball Drag for • Championship Athletic Sweatshirts field maintenance for Boys’ Basketball

Lights...Camera...Soirée!

The 31st Annual Soirée was held on May 12 at Musket Ridge Golf Club and was a wonderful and festive evening for the Saint John’s School Community. The festivities began in the tent, provided by the Board of Trustees, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Afterwards, everyone was escorted into the main dining room for a delicious sit-down dinner followed by a live auction. The evening wrapped up back in the tent where it was turned into “an after party” theme.

Some of the highlights of the Soirée included: the beautiful, festive decorations (chaired by Wendy Cook); a wonderful and creative selection of silent and live auction items (chaired by Michele Rogers and Beth Wright); the popular class-themed baskets were amazing (chaired by Michele Filyo and Marybeth Warner); auctioneers, Bill Ballantyne and Tom Thomas raised $39,677 in the live auction; and Greg Harraka, Chairman of the Board, addressed the crowd with an update on the new Buckeystown campus. It truly was a successful event for Saint John’s.

A special thank you to Jean Ballantyne, Amy Foss, and Liz Kinley for taking care of important “behind the scenes” activities as well as committee members Susan Feudale, JoAnne Grus, Mary Mathewson, and Cary Plamondon. An event like the Soirée cannot happen without the great work and support of parent volunteers and we are most grateful.

The Soirée raised a total of $72,500 from sponsorships, advertisements, donations, reservations, and silent/live auction items. This includes $18,550 that was raised in the live auction for science labs at the new campus. After expenses, the Soirée netted $53,950 - the most it has raised in the past several years. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the Soirée!

A Great Season for the Mock Trial Team!

After completing the regular season with four wins and two losses, Saint John’s Mock Trial team went to the semi-finals on March 13. Our team - lead by seniors Alex Nigida and Emily Tolino - delivered a stunning blow to the previously undefeated Oakdale High School team, beating them 52 to 51. As a result of that win, Saint John’s went on to compete in the County Championship on Wednesday, March 14.

For the third time in three years, Saint John’s went up against Urbana in the County Championship. After a difficult match wherein Saint John’s played the prosecution and Urbana the defense, the judge ruled in favor of the prosecution. However, Urbana won on total points.

Although there was disappointment over the loss to Urbana, the entire Mock Trial team deserves to be commended for a solid season.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SJCP MOCK TRIAL TEAM MEMBERS:

Attorneys: Jonathan Clark, Mark McGrail, Alex Nigida (Captain), Danny Russo, Emily Tolino, and Summer Villarosa

Saint John’s Catholic Prep is honored to have five students earn the highest rank in Scouts, the Eagle rank. Four seniors, Michael Allen, Alex Massi, Mark McGrail, and Gregory Stewar t, and junior Brian Hickman, completed their requirements this school year.

When asked how Scouting has impacted their lives, all of them mentioned the leadership skills they have learned. Alex said he learned “patience as a leader.” Brian said the values of Scouting, through the Scout Oath and Law, have been important in shaping his actions and decisions. Michael added that he gained confidence in his abilities and made life-long friends through Scouting. Mark emphasized the leadership skills and confidence building he gained in his Scouting experiences. Gregory mentioned the organizational skills and outdoor activities that taught him many important life lessons.

SJCP Boys’ Varsity Basketball Captured its First Ever MIAA Title

The Saint John’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball team experienced tremendous success this past season. The varsity team, led by its All-MIAA seniors Nick Peifer and Evan Austin, finished the season with a stellar record of 20 wins and 10 losses and captured the school’s first ever MIAA “C” Conference Championship for boys’ basketball. Coach Cheung stated, “This was a

great group of guys to coach, I am really going to miss the seniors, they are a special group of young men. The future of the program is very bright and I am really looking forward to next season.”

Baseball Wins 2nd Straight Conference Championship

Saint John’s baseball won the Conference Championship game by defeating Chapelgate 11-1. The game star ted off slow as neither team scored for the first 2-1/2 innings. The Vikings broke the game open with 7 runs in the bottom of the third inning and followed with 4 runs in the bottom of the four th inning. This was the second straight

Conference Championship for the Vikings and the four th straight year playing in the title game.

Helping Those in Need

The Campus Ministry Club volunteered at the Frederick Rescue Mission. The students, along with other volunteers, helped prepare food for over 200 Frederick residents who were served a free lunch that day. They helped prep food and drinks, cleaned dishes and trays, and were the hands and feet of Christ to the people in need. This was such a moving experience for our students to be able to help people in our area and they look forward to helping again.

Mr. Viking Pageant Benefi ts Cystic Fibrosis

The 1st Annual Mr. Viking Pageant, organized by the Student Government Association, was held this past spring. The event was a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis, which raised approximately $1,240 for the foundation. The SJCP male contestants competed in talent, evening wear, seasonal wear, on-stage presence, and a Q & A session. At the end of the show, the judges - our own Ms. Minsker, Mrs. Splaine, and Mr. Krajewski - announced the winner. Senior John Lewis was crowned “Mr. Viking.” The gentlemen performed an impromptu line dance at the end for an encore. The event was a huge success!

Helping Build “Kevin’s Room”

Kevin Ballantine, whose father and aunts graduated from Saint John’s and whose grandmother served on the original Board of Trustees, was losing his battle with leukemia this past year. His cousin, Mr. Tim Van Schaick and aunt, former faculty member Mrs. Sandra Ballantine, had asked The Vikings for Hope club to help raise funds for the project “Kevin’s Room,” which is a room in a Habitat for Humanity build. It had been Kevin’s dream to be a high school chemistry

teacher and to inspire his students to participate in this type of service.

The Vikings for Hope club, spearheaded by English Teacher Ms. Melissa Phillips, held several fundraisers over the past year to help raise money for “Kevin’s Room.” The initial goal was to raise $2,000 toward the room. The response from the community was so overwhelming and the Vikings for Hope raised over $8,000 to make Kevin’s dream a reality.

SJCP Walks to Raise Funds for Homeless

The Saint John’s community par ticipated in the Way Station’s “Help the Homeless” program. The program is a community-wide fundraising effor t that suppor ts organizations in the fight to prevent and end homelessness. Students, faculty, and staff walked around the school campus and raised over $2,620 for this great cause. Our associates at the Way Station could not say enough good things about the staff, faculty, administration, and students at Saint John’s.

Marching for Life!

Saint John’s Catholic Prep took 35 students and four adults to the March for Life in Washington D.C. They joined tens of thousands of protesters who marched from the National Mall to the Supreme Cour t for the annual call to end abor tion in the United States. This year marked the 39th anniversary of the march, which has been held every year since 1974 to mark the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Cour t Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abor tion nationwide.

Successful Blood DrivesSaint John’s hosted two American Red Cross blood drives. Both drives were a huge success and the units collected went to the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Regional blood services. A special thank you Mrs. Sandy Splaine and the SJCP Red Cross Club for all of their help in organizing the blood drives.

ALUMNI HAPPENINGS

Class of 1961 Celebrates Their 50th Reunion

The class of 1961 enjoyed several “mini reunions” to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. They culminated their reunion celebration the weekend of September 17 and 18 with a dinner and a visit to Saint John’s. Classmates reminisced about their high school years during a tour of the mansion and the McSherry gymnasium. They enjoyed visiting their old classrooms and remembering the dances and activities in the gym.

Alumni Share College Experience

A panel of alumni returned to SJCP to provide an overview of college life to our current senior class. A great discussion was held about everything from prioritizing your time to dealing with a complicated roommate situation. The panelists brought with them wonderful experience, wisdom, and insight to share. The discussion proved to be beneficial for our seniors.

Class of 1991 Celebrates 20 Years!

In late October, the class of 1991 held a series of events to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Greg Ross, History Department Chair, class of 1991, fi rst met up with several alums at the school for a stroll down memory lane, which included a reenactment of the Chemistry class seating chart! Alums were impressed with how Saint John’s has grown over the last 20 years. After the tour, there was a dinner at Brewer’s Alley, in downtown Frederick, where more alums joined in the fun.

Class of 1959 Celebrates Their 70th Birthdays!By Mary Louise Chesley-Cora, ‘59

In October, the class of 1959 gathered to celebrate those of us who “graced” this planet in 1941! Bob Hartman and his wife Jeannie hosted the group at their charming farmhouse near Thurmont. Eleven of the 22 from the class were able to attend along with spouses or friends. Everyone brought something to share and the level of comfort and friendship was a delight! This was our second gathering at Bob’s house. We came together two years ago to celebrate our 50th reunion from St. John’s at Prospect Hall. We were the fi rst class to move to the “new facility”...the days of the chandelier in the front hall and the swimming pool down the hill!

Our 70 years have brought many unexpected experiences and blessings and we were happy to be able to share them with those with whom we spent our teen years (and for some of us our entire childhood - grades 1-12). We look forward to future “reunions.”

Micah Distinguished Alumni Award Presented

The Micah Distinguished Alumni award was presented posthumously to Lois Ann Lipps Edwards, class of 1954, by President Gordon Oliver. She graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1958 and a year later married her devoted husband, Albert Edwards. Together they lived and worked in many areas of the world, including seven states and two countries before settling in Frederick, Maryland in 1998. Throughout her life, Lois participated in many charitable activities in her community. She was a member and president of Montgomery Ohio Women’s Club; taught CCD classes in Frederick, Delaware, and New Jersey for 14 years; was a lector at various parishes; and was a Meals on Wheels visitor. Lois was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, and along with her husband Albert, were committed and dedicated volunteers and generous contributors to Saint John’s Catholic Prep. We are ever so grateful for Lois’ generosity and support of Saint John’s.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually at Commencement to celebrate the accomplishments of an alumnus or alumna and is based upon the following Biblical quotation: “…This is what the Lord asks of you: only this, to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

Paul and Glenna Crutchley, 1957, 1958Paul and Glenna will be celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this year on December 29. They recently went on a cruise to Alaska with their children and families. Leslie Nuse, 1963Leslie retired on January 1, with 40 years of service with the State of Maryland at the Frederick County Cour thouse. She has been enjoying retirement by traveling to Europe and the Dominican Republic.

Donald Stevens, 1987Donald shared some exciting news with SJCP about his recent effor ts in Haiti. In February, he was featured in the Northern Virginia Daily about his effor ts to help bring jobs to Haiti. He also shared this wonderful picture of Marie Constant and her son standing proudly in front of her newly built, highly ear thquake and hurricane resistant home. The home was built by Shelter2Home-Haiti, SA through funding provided by Cross International, a Catholic non-profit based in Miami with operations helping families in need in more than 40 countries. REACH volunteers helped install the doors and windows on this house. Donald says, “This home was built as par t of our Corporate Social Responsibility so the smiles on Marie and her son’s face is all the profit that we will ever need.”

John Heslin, 2000 John received the Stephen Ailes Award for Outstanding Drill Sergeant of the Year in October 11.

Annie Ricci, 2006 Annie graduated from Mount St. Mary’s University with a major in Communication Studies. She resides in Frederick and is a Marketing & Communications Manager at Lonza Company.

Katie Denney, 2007 Katie is a registered nurse and works at Northwest Hospital.

Krystel Martinez, 2007 Krystel graduated in May of 2011 with a major in English Language and Literature along with two minors in French and Spanish from the University of Maryland in College Park. She attained academic honors for three consecutive semesters and states, “I attribute these accomplishments to my strong academic record at SJPH and to all of my teachers who have helped me achieve my academic goals.” Krystel was hired by SOC LLC, a full service security company managing international operations for many clients such as the United States Depar tments of State, Defense, and Energy. Her role in the company’s current contract with the Depar tment of State is to edit clearance documents for foreign nationals hired as guards for the U.S Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq.

Marie Burneko, 2008 Marie conducted research with The University of Vermont College of Medicine studying the effects of the medication, aliskiren, on diet induced obese mouse models. Her thesis was titled, “The effects of aliskiren on adipocyte proliferation, blood glucose, and insulin levels.” Her research involved looking at the drug to see if it increased glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in obese mice as a model of type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is correlated with diet induced obesity. The hope was to see if the drug could help those at risk for developing T2D from actually developing it, or decrease the risk of developing T2D. No conclusive results are available at this time. It was quite a process, but the research that Marie conducted earned her a distinguished undergraduate research award.

Kate Kersey, 2008 Kate recently graduated cum laude from James Madison University (JMU), a semester early, with a 3.7 GPA for her BA in History and a 3.8 GPA for her minor in Africana Studies. During her time at JMU, she worked as a research assistant looking to re-conceptualize the idea of what constitutes racism, exploring the idea of neocolonialism - specifically looking at the American race-based ghetto as an internal colony, and proliferation of segregation stemming from discrimination in the housing and job markets. Kate was for tunate enough to present at several conferences, including a PhD panel. She also studied abroad in the summer of 2011 in Ghana - both to take classes and volunteer in a school established for children whose parents either could not afford or chose not to send them to school. Kate states, “I feel very blessed to have been at Prospect Hall and to have received the educational basis to graduate early and without a single C!”

Chris Monacelli, 2008Chris graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on May 16 at the Coast Guard Academy in New London.

Sean Connole, 2009Sean was named to the Centennial Conference First Team for the 2012 season. Visit the Washington College Athletics website to read more about Sean’s baseball stats for the Shoremen.

Alex Asuncion, 2011Alex made a surprise visit to Saint John’s on November 11. She caught up with her former cross country coach Mr. Herr along with other faculty members and students. Alex currently attends the US Naval Academy and recently joined the Division I Varsity sailing team. Overall she is doing very well, and while the academics are difficult, Alex is up for the challenge and succeeding.

Aaron Hull, 2011 Aaron received a nomination to the United States Air Force Academy from Senator Barbara Mikulski.

DeShawn Weaver, 2011Fifty-fi ve players were named to the 2011 NAIA Football All-Independent Teams and DeShawn Weaver of Robert Morris was selected. Players are voted on and selected from ten different NAIA Independent football programs and those respective coaches.

2011-2012 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS REPORT

Message from the Chair of the Board

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your generous support of our 2011-2012 fundraising efforts. We gratefully recognize your fi nancial sacrifi ces to help ensure Saint John’s Catholic Prep’s continued success.

It was an important year to meet our budgeted fundraising goals, with preparing to move to our new campus. Total cash contributions from all sources of income amounted to $526,186, which is an increase of $44,559 over last year. Generous donors answered the call by making Saint John’s a priority in their charitable giving and our school benefi tted immensely.

With your gifts, we continue to live our mission of providing an environment for our students to grow spiritually, morally, academically, and physically for the glory of God.

As a parent of three graduates, I share with you the passion for excellence at Saint John’s and feel a deep sense of responsibility for the future of our great school.

Thank you again for your generosity. Your support is evidence that a Saint John’s education is truly valued – for this generation and the next generations to come.

Gregory E. HarrakaBoard Chairman

A Message from The Advancement Offi ce

Again this year, in an effort to save costs, the Honor Roll of Donors Report is combined with the Summer Newsletter and is a modest recognition of an exceptional year. Please take a few moments to read through the report.

The faculty, staff, and students at Saint John’s are tremendously grateful for the enthusiastic support of our entire community of parents, alumni, board members, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends. Thank you, one and all, for your generosity.

It was truly a great year of fundraising for the Saint John’s school community. The Soiree was the most successful it has been in the past 20 years; the Annual Fund exceeded its budgeted goal for the second year in a row; the Booster Club continues to grow and greatly supports our athletic programs; several Legacy Campaign pledges were fulfi lled; and new friends to our school community kindly established a $50,000 scholarship fund for deserving students at SJCP. In addition, we were awarded a technology matching grant from The Knott Foundation this past June. For every dollar raised, the Knott Foundation matches with $2.00 – at a maximum of $80,000. As of this date, $25,900 has been contributed toward the matching grant. We anticipate raising $40,000, bringing the total grant to $120,000.

The generosity from our donors allows us to help close the gap between the true cost of a Saint John’s education and the funding available from tuition. Your fi nancial commitment is never taken for granted – every donation is greatly appreciated.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, we sincerely and wholeheartedly thank our many donors who continue to invest in Saint John’s.

Diane L’Huillier-FavretExecutive Director for Institutional Advancement
