THIS IS NOT A BCDK REVIEW
As one who has gone through the closing ofthree libraries, my attention was taken bythe new SIA publicationClDSINGTHE CORPOR-ATE LIBRARY: CASE STUDIES ON THE DECISION-
MAKING,py Janes M.. Matarazzo; $11.00. Itincludes interviews with the cor{X)rateman-agerrent and libraripn of libraries that havebeen closed, focusing on the reasons andthinking in closing them.
I read it from the p::>int of view of whatshould or shouldn't I be doing to keepitfrom happening to me - again. One itemthat stands out is one we'reall aware of -that librariesgenerally arenotin themainstream of co:qx:>rate operations, and donot directly ixrpact cor{X)rate goa.ls. Thismakes it easy for us to miss changes inernphasi s or direction, and to over looksigns that could influence thehealthofour libraries.
We get caught up in day-to-day operations,perh2ps don't take the time to ccmmmicatewi th our managers and the library users weserve. We need to pause; toperiodicallyverify if we are still on the right trackand m?eting actual needs, not just main-tai..'1ing a collection and waiting to be asked.CIDSING THE CORPORATELIBRARY... can behelpful in reminding us to get out there andpress the flesh or else?
MAY 1982
MflARERSHIPDIREC'roRYIt's time to start workon the 1982-83MembershipDirectory, so the ExecutiveBoard and Advisory Council have been ex-ploring al ternati ve methods of production. With thanks to the footworkof RJse Kattloveand Jon Greene, the Executive Board hasapprovro contracting wi th a vendor to createa. data base, eliminating hundreds of 3 x 5cards, and imreasurable hours by the Member-shipCorrmittee in updating and cross-refer-encing entries. The result will be an en-tirely new look for the directory, noreinformation in it, hopefully, an earlierpublication date, and p::>ssibly other productsin future years, produce<i from the same database.
The redesigned questionnaire for the 182-83Directory will be in the June Newsletter.Be sure to returnit,as therewillnot be a.followup. If you have any changes betweenthe questionnaire period and directory pub-lication (about October), they should be sentto Pamela Cibbarelli, 1981-82MembershipChair, as well as to theAssociation office.
SLA PRESIDENTGEORGEGINADERAs previously announced, Association PresidentGeorge Ginader will visit the SouthernCa.lif-ornia Chapter, and will be the featuredspeaker at our Annual Business M=eting on May20. Presidents are able to visiteachChap-ter only every few years, so let's have agood turnout for George! The meeting announce-rrent is i..Tlthis issue.
DIAMJND JUBILEEI would liketo hear from nore of you onideas for the WPst Coast nrini-conference.
One suggestion has been for it to be held inSan Francisco rather than Monterey; v.i1at doyou think?
Happy May Day with flowers to you all.

DUPLICATE EXCHANGE
Twenty-three replies have been received andtallied from the questionnaire composed by
Pamela Cibbarelli, a member of the Duplicate
Exhange Committee. The fate of duplicate
exchange as a chapter project is uncertain
until more replies are received. Please send
replies to Pamela and your lists to Margaret
Cressaty. Since the Newsletter seldom has
space to publish the lists, the new policy of
listing the library and the availability of
the list will be followed. If you have not
already started a list, please follow thisformat:
List titles in alphabetical order. If acro-
nyms are used please enter the name of the
organization in parenthesis after the acronym.Follow the two column format with an inch
margin to the left and an inch between the
columns. At the head of each column give the
name of the library person to whom requests
should be addressed, mailing address, tele-
phone number, and the length of time itemswill be held. At the head of each column
indicate if the items are offered or needed.
Example:

~~en your list is received, a note will hesent to the Newsletter editors that it is
,available on request from you. Please send
with each list a self addressed, stamped en-velope. Please keep a record of the number of
items reqtlested and of those that filled yourneeds. This will be another way of determin-
ing the need of duplicate exchange.
