INTRODUCTION The Special Operations (SO) Branch, Office of Strategic Services, London,

was charged with conducting sabotage operations, support and supply of resis- tance groups, and guerrilla warfare in enemy and enemy-occupied territories of the European Theater. The "London Group" of the Special Operations Execu- tive (SOE) is its British counterpart.

On January 10, 1944, the two organizations were integrated into Special Forces Headquarters under which they were charged with carrying on their operations.

This War Diary is an attempt to record the work of SO Branch, OSS, London, prior to its integration with SOE and to give an account of its participation in the work of the Special Force Headquarters. SI War Diary, Foreword, Volume I.

The purpose of the Secret Intelligence Branch, OSS, London, was to "collect and analyse such strategic information as may be required by the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. London provided unique opportunities for the collection of such information since England was the headquarters and central operating for at least six foreign intelligence services in addition to the British.

"The purpose of this diary is to describe the establishment and functions of the SI, and to outline the growth and development of the activities, objectives, and plans of SI London, and of the missions and units which operated under its direction," SI War Diary, Vol. 1, Survey, p.1.

The teams were to consist of a noncommissioned radio operator, an officer native to the country in which he would operate, and a second officer, either British or American. The purpose of these teams was to make contact with resistance groups, to bring them instructions from the Supreme Allied Commander, wireless/telegraph communications, supplies, and if necessary, leadership." Office of the Chief, p.XXXVIII. RF-Section: Section of the Western European Directorate dealing with the existing independent French resistance group which maintained liaison through the Free French Bureau Central de Renseignements et d'Action (BCRA), with French resistance.
