After a sharp drop in2009, the Frenchleisure andyachting business
has recovered well. Accordingto the Fédération desIndustries Nautiques in Paris, the industry, including themanufacturing of boats, rosein France by 11 per centbetween 2010 and 2011.
In total, 54,548 boats werebuilt in the past yearincluding 4,530 sailing boatsand 19,294 motorboats, achieving a turnover of 901million euros. Exports rose bya remarkable 67 percent andevery second newly built boatis now exported.
Meanwhile, this success inthe area of new builds ishelping to push up thesecond-hand market, whichgrew by five percent.
It is all having a positiveimpact on the various boat-related companies thatoperate in the Côte d'Azur.Businesses in the conversionand repair fields have a strongpresence here and under-
standably so. Boat buyersalmost always requestchanges to the vessels.
A quarter of all boats inFrance is located in the portsof Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur(PACA). In the Alpes Mari-times alone, there are 33harbours and within them are17,450 boats and yachts.
The ports employ 3,671 full-time employees and pull-in1.2 billion euros annually. There is no doubt this is asignificant contributor to thelocal economy.
But something's missing.Demand is high and supply ismore or less stagnant.
The need for new orextended ports is being metwith a lack of suitable landand opposition by environ-mentalists is inhibiting plansthat are already in place. Forexample, rumours of col-laboration between SaintLaurent du Var and Cagnessur Mer remain remarkablyquiet.

Yacht show confirms the trend: there’s an upswing in the boating industry
The Monaco Yacht Show 2012 was another huge success, achieving a
record attendance of 33,000 and continuing a 20-year legacy that has soli-
dified Monaco as the yacht capital of the world. Yachting companies, yacht
owners, wealthy customers and representatives of future purchasers came
to explore the 500 stands and more than 100 superyachts. Organisers say last
year’s show signalled an upswing in the market, and this year confirmed that
trend. Offshore, 120 superyachts were at anchor, directly linked by tenders
to the exhibitors on the docks. Cocktail parties at the stands, press talks
and onboard parties, gala dinners in Monte Carlo’s grand hotels: there were
about 100 events this year. A record. The Riviera Times’ stand welcomed a
host of VIP subscribers and clients with a welcome glass of superb

Local News > Monaco > Monaco Yacht Show a success
Monaco: 100 yachts assemble on Port Hercule for the four day event, from 19th to 22nd September
Monaco Yacht Show a successThe yachting event of the year took place in spectacular style with 100luxury yachts assembled at Port Hercule. The 22nd Monaco Yacht Showhas seen many firsts, including the Ipanema from Bavaria and aninternational influx like never before.
With a yacht club that boasts over 1,000members from 56 nationalities, Monacohas become the international centre ofyachting. This year's show put Monaco'sglobal reputation into the limelight as theworld's top 15 customised yacht buildersexhibited their creations on the famousPort Hercule from 19th to 22nd September.
Gaelle Tallarida, general manager of theMonaco Yacht Show, says: "We feel verypositive, with signs of renewed interest."Tallarida expects that the 80 per centmajority of foreign visitors have boostedMonaco's economy. Meanwhile, it appears
that the celebrated show has discovered a new demographic in Asia: "The Chinese are part ofour new clientele," she adds.
The Graf Ipanema was among the international display at Port Hercule. This hand-crafted boatexudes tradition as the keel, frame and stringers are made entirely of oak and mahogany. At firstglance, you are transported back in time to the 50s and 60s, where movie stars and monarchscruised the Cote d'Azur in similar specimens. But don't let appearances fool you, this Bavarianrunabout can reach top speeds of 40 knots and tackle the tightest corners. It is the perfectambassador for a yacht show which is both progressing into modernity and rooted in tradition.
Also new for 2012 was the upper-deck lounge, where exhibitors and visitors could meet at thechampagne bar or dine at the official MYS restaurant. Media co-ordinator of the Monaco YachtShow, Johan Pizzardini, says: "We transformed the restaurant to a lounge 650 metres squared toaccomodate the elite of society and of the yacht market." This social space also played host tothe official sponsers of MYS, German car manufacturer BMW and Swiss watchmaker UlysseNardin.
