Two-thirds of the Best of the Best firms appeared on the list in both 2016 and 2017, demonstrating an impressive commitment to excellence and sustainability. They represent what is possible in a public accounting firm and are the peer group that high-performing firms can benchmark themselves against.
“Most firms don’t aspire to be average. Best of the Best firms are the peer group to which progressive firms aspire,” says Michael Platt, principal of the Platt Group and publisher of IPA. “In presenting the results of the IPA Best of the Best, we are proud to continue the tradition of expanding the imagination and the understanding of what is possible to achieve in running a public accounting firm.” IPA
The IPA Best of the Best Methodology: All metrics in this issue are based on the top-scoring 25 Best of the Best, unless noted. The top-scoring 25 Best of the Best firms represent the top 5% of all U.S. firms that participated in the 2018 IPA Annual Survey and Analysis of Firms. The 10 Best of the Best Under $5 Million and the five Canadian firms are identified and recognized in this
issue of INSIDE Public Accounting but are not included in the full analysis.

The 2018 IPA Best Of The Best Under $5 Million Operating at an IPA Best of the Best level is a notableaccomplishment for any firm, particularly those with less than $5 million in net revenues. The Best of the Best Under $5 Million operate with a relatively small staff – from eight to 26 employees – yet their performance is indicative of much larger firms thathave adopted sophisticated structures, policies and systems.
Three firms this year have earned the Best of the Best Under $5 Million recognition for three consecutive years.
IPA congratulates the following firms for bringing a refined combination of nimbleness, skill and entrepreneurial acumen to their management and operations.IPA

The 2018 IPA Best Of The Best Canadian Firms
The 2018 Best of the Best Canadian firms range in size from$6.8 million to $30.9 million and represent the top 20% of the highest-performing Canadian firms that participated in the 2018 IPA Survey and Analysis of Firms. All but one is a single-office firm, and they are located between Montreal in the east and Vancouver in the west.
As was the case last year, the dominant service line for the Best of the Best in Canada is audit and assurance services, representing an average of 65% of total revenues for the five firms. Tax revenues account for an average of 26% of the total within these firms. With average staff turnover at a modest 9.7%, and growth in revenue at 11%, Best of the Best Canadian firms are fine-tuning their teams and growth engines with no merger activity.
Professional staff leverage for these firms ranges from a low of 5.5 professionals per equity partner to a high of 12.5, with professional staff producing an average of 91% of all chargeable hours of the firm. Although women make up 15% of all partners in these firms, two of the firms are run by women with a collective 16 years of experience at the helm. IPA

What Makes INSIDE Public Accounting Unique
INSIDE Public Accounting collects and analyzes more
financial and operational data than anyone in the public
accounting profession. IPA is the independent leader for
the profession, and is not tied with a consulting or
association division.
Firm leaders have trusted IPA with their firms’ financial
and operational data for more than 30 years to compile
one of the longest-running, most comprehensive
benchmarking (MAP) reports within the profession.
Annually, hundreds of firms participate in IPA’s survey,
which benchmarks firms ranging in size from $1 million
to $1 billion across North America. IPA’s annual award-
winning National Benchmarking Report and the monthly
newsletter have earned the respect of the top minds in
the industry.
The survey is the basis of all that is done at IPA, as it
provides the information that is analyzed in the
benchmarking report and in newsletter articles that aim
to help leaders push their firms to grow, become more
profitable and better serve their clients.
INSIDE Public Accounting’s Survey & Analysis of Firms
Gain your competitive advantage and grow your firm with industry insight from the independent benchmarking

survey is open to all firms in North America and launches in January every year. All
data collected, including salaries, compensation, income, etc., will be held in strict
confidence.
Participants are benchmarked against more than 570 firms and may be ranked
among this year’s IPA 100, IPA 200, IPA 300 and the coveted IPA Best of the Best firms
in the nation.
