June is the ecclesiastical month devoted to the Apos-
tles. They were the followers of Christ who were given the
daunting task of proclaiming the Gospel. Jesus Christ com-
mitted His teachings to His disciples who, by witness and preaching, be-
gan the Church in His name. Christ selected from among many disciples and followers the

As we enter the early days of Summer, I want to highlight some of the wonderful events we’ve enjoyed since Easter and what we have planned for June. We celebrated the 10th Anniversary of our thriving Moms ‘N Tots program on Sunday, April 29th. As I shared with the parish that day, Moms ‘N Tots is the reason Christine and I began coming to St. Anthony 9 years ago. I know that it has done the same for many other of our families. Without question, I want to thank Esther Vavoulis and Vangie Dupas for having the vision and energy to start the pro-gram. Irene Albeck spearheaded the Anniver-sary event and had the help of many people,
especially Peter and Michelle Bissias. Immediately following our Anniversary lunch-
eon, we rolled into our first Building Program Town Hall. Father Anthony Scott of Steward-
ship Advocates presented his findings and rec-ommendations stemming from his Capital
Campaign Assessment. In addition to Fr. Scott, Randy Soewers, the head of our Design
Sub-Committee, presented a preview on the Master Plan work we’ve been actively engaged
in the past 6 months. This Town Hall was the first of several we intend to hold over the next
year, as we truly begin to realize a long-gestating dream for our St. Anthony commu-nity. From the feedback we received directly from parishioners and from Fr. Scott’s Assess-ment, we will be communicating more fre-quently with the entire parish. In May, we enjoyed a number of events to-gether, including the revival of our Family
Night on May 4, after a Lenten hiatus. I wanted to thank our St. Anthony Greek Dance Program for providing the wonderful dinner that everyone enjoyed.
Our GOYA Basketball teams competed val-iantly and honorably through the Semi-Finals. St. Anthony also hosted the League’s Awards
Banquet on May 6th in our Hellenic Cultural Center. Nick Angelos did an outstanding job of
heading up our GOYA Basketball program this year, and created the strong, positive environ-
ment that our children truly benefited from. I am particularly proud to see Nick take on so many responsibilities. He is a wonderful ex-ample of someone who grew up at St. Anthony and is now taking a leadership role to give oth-ers the same wonderful opportunities he en-joyed growing up here. We have some very important events in June that require your attendance and support. First, a very important General Assembly will be held on June 3rd immediately after church. We will be seeking approval from the parishioners in attendance to take the critical next steps in our Buidling Program. Now that we have completed our Master Plan and initial
Capital Campaign Assessment, we are ready to engage a Capital Campaign consultant and an Architectural Design firm to create the next
level of detail in our planning. All of this will be done with the goal of coming back to the
General Assembly in November to get final ap-proval to begin with the actually building
sometime in 2008. Obviously, this will all be predicated on how successful our first-wave
Capital Campaign efforts are in the next 6 months, as well as what we learn about the
refined cost estimates and trade-offs of the building itself.
Our annual Golf Tournament will take place
on Friday, June 15th at the lovely Brookside Golf Course by the Rose Bowl. As it is every year, the event is the primary event fundraiser for our Building Program. Over the past 6 years, we have raised $330,000. This year is
shaping up to be one of our strongest tourna-ments ever. The tremendous success of this event lies on the broad shoulders of a few key leaders and many others who selflessly give their time, talents, and treasures. I would like to thank Ted Attalla and Nick Angelos for chairing the Golf Tournament this year, as well as tournament founders Jimmy Christodoulelis
and Ted Vavoulis for providing their time and mentoring.

St. James the Lesser preached in Syria and Egypt. St. Symon the Zealot preached far and wide in African Mauritania and to the north in Britannia, present -day England. St. Matthias (chosen from the 70 to take the place of Ju-das) preached in Judea and outer Ethiopia. St. James, the Greater remained and preached in Jerusalem. Their chief mission was to bear witness to the Savior, His life, His teachings, and especially to bear witness to Christ's Res-urrection. "And with great power the Apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 1:22; 4:2,33).
The influence of their testimony was, and re-mains, enormous throughout the world. See how many followers of Christ there are today!
These men were not promoting themselves, but instead were representing their Lord Christ and proclaiming Him as the great High Priest.
See the profound influence they have had on our Orthodox Church. In the Orthodox Church,
there is never an ordination of a deacon, priest, or bishop performed without referring
to the Apostles. There is a reading of the com-plete list of the names of all the predecessors.
Christ and the Apostolic succession are the
foundation of the Orthodox Church, and are also the evidence of the Church's sanctifica-tion. The Orthodox Church began at Pentacost. It is historical and canonical in the Orthodox Church that the bishops of the Church are the successors to the blessed Twelve Apostles of Christ!
We thank God that He entrusted these twelve ordinary men with the mission of spreading the good news of Christ throughout the world. Because of their works and eventual martyr-dom we have the joy and assurance of know-ing and understanding, exactly, the origins of our Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy began in Christ and his exhortation to the Apostles, and Orthodoxy continues in Christ. Christ is the
head of the Orthodox Christian Church, which is served by bishops, priests, and deacons of
Apostolic succession.
Rejoice in the name, and in the Church, of the Lord!

Finally, I recognize that many will be taking extended vacations this summer. I hope to
take the family to Greece for a couple of weeks in July. Father Peter and his family will be in Greece for several weeks in July. Alma has plans for late September and several Parish Council members have similar plans through-out the summer. Though this will lessen the
intensity of our day-to-day parish activities, we will continue to aggressively move forward on our Building Program and other vital parish activities. Likewise, and dare I say, we need to push ahead on our Festival planning and prepara-tions. Our Festival will be September 14-
16 this year. I regret to inform you that we are still in need of a Festival Chair or Co-Chairs, but we have a very strong cadre of ex-
perienced individuals running particular parts of the Festival. In the interim, I will be
working closely with past Festival Chairs Julie Balas and Sam Dallas to make sure we are
making the necessary progress, but I welcome suggestions or volunteers for a well-organized leader for this very important community event. With that, I will wish you all a blessed and en-joyable June and July. Our Bulletin will be back in August with news about our Building
Program, our Festival, and events related to the start of ecclesiastical year on September 1st.

These are just a few of the enthusiastic comments from parishioners fre-quently heard by members of the Building Committee and Parish Coun-cil as we started the task of creating a Master Plan for the future of St. An-
thony.
This important challenge was met by a dedicated group of approximately 20-25 parishioners with a wide range of professional and practical experience, from architects to designers..... from contractors to those in real estate, business, and finance. Our goal was to create the best plan for our community.
What was the Building Committee's process? During the past couple of years, St. Anthony's Building Committee has diligently worked together with a Pasa-dena architectural firm (HMC) to formulate a Master Plan for St. Anthony's future. Reports and presentations regarding the progress of the Master Plan were made at General Assemblies during that period.
The Master Plan process was completed and presented to the community at a Town Hall meeting on April 29th, 2007. Thereafter, Building Committee members were
available after church during each Sunday in May to an-swer questions and provide additional information.
The Design Sub-Committee, Building Committee, and Parish Council all unanimously voted that a New Hall option be chosen as our desired plan for moving into the next phases of our program. This recommendation was taken to the General Assembly Meeting on Sunday, June 3rd. After hearing presentations from the Design and Fi-nance Sub-Committees, our General Assembly unani-mously voted to pursue the goal of building a New Hall and Community Center. The General Assembly further voted to proceed with a Capital Campaign, engage Fa-ther Scott of Stewardship Advocates and to hire an ar-chitect to complete the schematic design of the proposed structure. These were very important steps for all of us to take as a community. Construction of the New Hall and Commu-nity Center will be contingent upon a successful Capital Campaign and upon further refinement of design and costs. It is our intent to come back to the General As-sembly in the November timeframe with much greater information about our Capital Campaign and Design/Costs. At that time, we can decide on how to best pro-ceed, and with the blessings of God, approve the start of construction for our New Hall and Community Center..

Building Committee Update
Registration and classes began in Sep-tember with one hun-dred thirty-eight stu-dents. Due to limited space classes were
grouped together. Mrs. Margaret Vagenas was lead teacher for preschool children, Ms. Sophia Kypreos for kindergarten and first grade, with Mrs. Albeck, Mrs. Christopoulos, and Mrs. Vorgias filling in when needed, Mrs. Stavros, second and third grades, Mrs. Tsou-valas, fourth and fifth grades, Mrs. Tripodes, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades and Mrs. Grover high school. Mrs. Samaan and Carolyn Burkard were our substitutes. Here are some highlights from this years program:
• In November we held our annual Turkey
Drawing. Through the sales of tickets and lunch the profits were close to $2,000.
• December, we held our annual Christmas
program with a special guest following the pageant.
• February, we held Godparent Sunday.
• Sunday of Orthodoxy students brought
their icons and took part in the procession of the icons.
• The Oratorical Festival was under the lead-
ership of Mrs. Athena Dallas.
• In April we attended Divine Liturgy on Sat-
urday of Lazarus, followed by breakfast and making palm crosses.
• A retreat was held on Holy Friday and was
attended by fifty-five students.
• Sunday of the Holy Myrrh bearers, the
young girls who participated as a Myrafora assisted Parish council with their duties.
We welcome those who wish to teach a class, co-teach, assist, or substitute. Curriculum and training will be provided. Please contact church office to offer your service. Catechet-ical training of our young people is a reward-ing and lasting experience for both teacher and student. Through Father Peter’s inspira-tion and guidance we will develop a stronger catechetical program. Thank you Father Peter for your compassion, devotion to the teachers and students.

Named after the fourth century Archbishop of Constantinople, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival is a competition struc-tured at parish, Metropolis, and Archdiocesan (national) levels. In addition to the public speaking skills and theological learning that the students gain from participat-ing in the St. John Chrysostom
Oratorical Festival, the Festival also provides col-lege scholarships. Congratulations to all the par-ticipants from St. Anthony’s. Our young people made our parish very proud!
Our own 13 year old Lefteri Christodulelis placed 1st at St. Anthony’s and 1st in the District and 2nd in the Metropolis. At the Metropolis Competition he competed against other district winners from Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona & Hawaii in his category at St. Nicholas Ranch.
What was you topic for your presentation?
Lefteri: The life of Saint Andrew, the first called of the Apostles and his connection to the Ecu-menical Patriarchate.
What did you find most interesting about St. Andrew?
Lefteri: That St. Andrew was the founder of the church hierarchy.
What was your favorite thing about partici-
pating in this years festival? Lefteri: I really loved meeting kids from all the other churches, I met people from everywhere!

As we conclude our 2006-2007 school year, we would like to express our deep gratitude to our teachers, Eleni Tsaggouri, Dimitra Kasdagli, Georgia Tripodes, and Dr. Marianna Nikolaidou, for their hard and outstanding work in educating members of our community in the Greek lan-guage and culture.
We would also like to thank our parents and stu-dents for your dedication and help throughout our school year.

I would like everyone to know the satisfac-
tion I have felt from volunteering for this program and for our church. Watching our
kids build friendships over the years and learn and dance together has made me
very proud. To watch the pride of our cul-ture grow in our kids and shine out their
eyes as they dance and perform has rejuvenated my love of Greek folk
dance and has made me even more proud to be a part of our community. Thank you
for the opportunity to serve as the Dance Board President for the past two years. It
was my pleasure.

On April 29th, St. An-thony's celebrated Moms N’ Tot's 10th year anniversary honoring the teachers and its participants. A special thank you to Irene Al-beck, Michele Bissias and Sophia Angelos for organizing this beau-tiful event.
Moms N’ Tots has concluded its 2006/2007 school year. Many thanks to Michele Prappas for dedicating her talent and love to the St Anthony's Moms N’ Tots for the past few years. Moms N’ Tots will begin it's 2007-2008 school year in October 2007.
The St. Anthony's Moms N’ Tots program is still looking for a teacher for the 2007-2008 school
year. Our program includes prayer, storytime, music, art and playtime for children in-fant to 4 1/2 years of age. If you are interested, please con-tact Theodora Coulis at (626) 836-4849 or email at [email protected] for more information.
All 4 of St. Anthony’s basketball teams had a winning season because each player and coach gave their best effort every game. Everyone should be proud of their individual and team accomplishments. The season was filled with excitement, laughs, and some great basketball moments.
I want to thank all the fans and parents that supported the games each week. I want to tip my hat to the coaches that dedicated them-selves for the last 3 months to coach the great children and teens of St. Anthony’s. It was a pleasure for me and I know it was for the other coaches as well. It definitely shows the strength of our youth and the strong support of the St. Anthony’s parents. I certainly appreci-ate the support given to me and to the other

Easter picnic softball game knows that Fr. Peter has quite a swing! His great
long hits went right over everyone in the outfield!

adults and children enjoyed themselves at this year’s annual Easter picnic! It was a wonderful gathering for our parish held at
beautiful Lacy Park. Everyone enjoyed participating in the Easter

Dear Saint Anthony's Parishioners, Another festival is approaching and we need everyone to pitch in just like last year in order for Greek Fest' 07 to be our bestever. Greek Fest '07 will be early this year September 14th, 15th and 16th. Our next festival meeting will be on Monday July 9th at 7:00PM. We are hop-ing that more parishioners will get involved in the committee. The more of us that help the more successful our festival will be. We will begin cooking earlier this year. The first cooking dates are only 3 weeks away, and we are hoping to see all of you there. We will be starting with Mous-saka, Pastitsio, Tiropita & Spanakopita. There are several critical ways that anyone can help. Please send an email ([email protected] or call 626.390.1149, Julie): If you are willing to chair any of these dishes or cooking days; If you are willing to pay for and/or bring in supplies for any of these dishes, If you are willing to provide a light lunch (for about 15) for any of these days; Finally, and most importantly if you are available to come and participate.

The Twelve Apostles Jesus Christ endowed His Church with Himself and His divine Message. He handed it down to His disciples, who constituted His Church. Jesus Christ selected from among them Twelve Apostles to carry on with authority His Gospel, and He sent them to preach it and to baptize converts all over the world:
"Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with
you always, even unto the end of the world" (Matt. 28: 19-20).
The Apostles kept their mission with integrity and faithful-ness. They dedicated their lives to it; they injected the new faith in the' true God into society to heal its infirmities.
The Apostles organized the converts into groups called Churches. To these Churches the Apostles handed down the treasure of the new Gospel, their eyewitness account of the Word as they actually saw it take place, preserving it forever through the Church. This is the Gospel - the Tradition in the broad sense of the word - which we cherish today. Taking the Truth from the Apostles, the Orthodox Church is an "Apostolic" Church; it has its roots in the apostolic ministry and succession, the apostolic faith and creed, and the apos-tolic word and scriptures by which the Apostles and their im-mediate successors defended the Orthodox Faith and kept it undefiled against heresies and persecutions.
But who are these blessed Apostles who were chosen to hand down the new Gospel and establish the Church to which we belong today? Who empowered them to preach the Gospel and disregard all the threats which endangered and, in the end, took their lives? Who are these mighty personalities who were the instrumental figures behind the worldwide move-ment which has changed the pace of life of men thereafter?
Sometimes the voice of the past is the clearest and most vivid guide for the minds and hearts of men of today, taking them out of the confused values of this life. Sometimes the lives and deeds of men of the past are unforgettable and stand as lightposts to illuminate the road for a future achievement. They stand as unshakable rocks on which the waves of disap-pointment of life lose their force and disappear. The Apostles
of Christ are both the rocks and the lightposts for our life.
To them, our ancestors in the Christian heritage and faith, this pamphlet is humbly dedicated, that both the writer and the reader might imitate their devotion and work and appreciate their convictions in Christ, "in Whom they lived and moved and had their being" (Acts 17: 28).
The personal life of the Apostles is not very well known. For some of them we know nothing except names. But their work remains for generations to come. It was their intention to carry on the Lord's work and will, rather than their own. From the fruits of their work we visualize their character and inten-tions.
Short Biographies of the Twelve Simon, Peter Born in Bethsaida in Galilee, be was a fisherman and was named by Jesus Christ "Cephas" (in Greek, Peter), and called to be a fisher of men, an Apostle. In all lists of the Twelve he is named first, and belonged to the inner group of Apostles. He was present at the Transfiguration and at the Agony of Christ. When he professed his belief that Jesus is the Christ, the Lord promised that "Thou art Peter and on this rock will I build My Church", meaning on the rock of faith in the Savior. Peter's confession of faith was soon followed by a sharp re-buke, from the Lord. Peter said that he would never leave his Lord, and was answered by the prediction of his triple denial, which later took place. Later, Peter made reparation for his triple denial by a triple protestation of love. After the Ascen-sion, Peter took the leadership of the Apostles. He spoke on the day of Pentecost and was the first to perform a miracle in the name of Jesus. He accepted Cornelius for baptism and thus opened the Church to the Gentiles. His authority is evi-dent at the Apostles' Council at Jerusalem, although Paul re-buked him for giving in to the demands of the Jewish Chris-tians to disassociate himself from the Gentiles. Peter is the founder of the Church in Antioch. He probably went to Rome and was crucified head downward during the reign of Nero (54-68).
Andrew A disciple of John the Baptist, Andrew heard him refer to Je-sus as the Lamb of God. Andrew asked for an audience and saw Jesus for a day, then proclaimed, "We have found the Messiah," in itself a creed and confession for the Christian faith. He brought his brother, Simon-Peter, to Christ. Al-though not one of the inner circle, he played the first role in several events which are recorded. Eusebius in his Church History states that Andrew later went to Scythia. According to tradition he was martyred at Patras, Greece, crucified on an X-shaped cross, which since has become known as St. An-drew's Cross. He is regarded as being connected with the writing of St. John's Gospel. According to tradition, he is the founder of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

James (The Greater) He was the son of Zebedee. He, with his elder brother John and with Peter, constituted the privileged group - the inner circle of the disciples. James was present at the Transfigura-tion and the Agony in Gethsemane. His zeal was ardent and he and his brother were named by the Lord "Boanerges", which means "sons of thunder". James was beheaded by Herod Agrippa I in A. D. 44, the first of the Twelve to suffer martyrdom. A theory that he preached in Spain is counter to the tradition of the Church and the Epistle to the Romans, 15:20 and 24, which concur that he did not leave Jerusalem. According to an old Spanish tradition, the body of St. James was transferred to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where St. James was one of the most revered Spanish saints during the Middle Ages.
John He was one of the inner circle with Peter and James. The son of Zebedee, he and his brother James were named the "sons of thunder". John is the author of the fourth Gospel, the Book of Revelation and three Catholic Epistles. He was imprisoned with Peter and later appeared in the Sanhedrin. John also was sent with Peter to Samaria, where they prayed that the con-verts might receive the Holy Spirit. In Jerusalem, he was pre-sent at the Council of the Apostles. John was "one of the two" with Andrew who first had an audience with the Lord, He was the one "whom Jesus loved" and who reclined on his bosom at the Mystic Supper. Jesus from His cross entrusted His mother to John at the foot of the cross. He was the one who ran with Peter to the tomb on the morning of the resurrection, and who recognized the Risen Lord at the Sea of Tiberius, where our Lord spoke to him the words that he would not die (John 21:7). According to tradition, he went to Asia Minor and settled in Ephesus. Later he was exiled to Patmos, an island.
Phillip He is the Apostle from Bethsaida who obeyed the call of Je-sus and led Nathaneal to Christ. At the feeding of the 5,000 people, Jesus said to Phillip to buy bread, and Phillip an-swered Him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." Phillip on another occa-sion asked Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father" and Jesus re-torted, "Yet you do not know me Phillip?" Phillip the Apostle should not be confused with Phillip, one of the seven Dea-cons. The Apostle Phillip preached the Gospel in Asia and suffered crucifixion, according to tradition.
Bartholomew His name is patronymic, meaning "son of Tolmai". Some-times he is identified with Nathaneal whom Phillip led to Christ. According to the historian Eusebius, when Pantainus of Alexandria visited India between 150 and 200 A. D., he found there the Gospel according to Matthew left behind by Bartholomew one of the Apostles. According to tradition, Bartholomew was flayed to death at Albanapolis in Armenia.
Matthew He was the evangelist who was a Jew and a tax-collector re-ferred to as Levi before he was called by Christ, Whom be
followed. He is the author of the First Gospel. In his geneal-ogy of Jesus Christ, he emphasizes the Lord's human nature and origin. Therefore, in Christian symbolism, Matthew has been represented by the figure of man (cf Rev 4:7). The icon of Matthew in the Orthodox Church is to be found in one of the four triangles which are formed by the arches connected to the dome of the Church.
Thomas He was called the Twin. On the way to Bethany He offered to die with Jesus. He interrupted the last discourse of Jesus with the question "We know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?". Thomas doubted the resurrection of Christ unless he were to touch the wounds of the Risen Lord, but later con-fessed his faith in Him: "My Lord and My God" - the first to confess so explicitly the Lord's divinity. According to tradition, Thomas evangelized the Parthians. The Syrian Christians of Malabar called themselves "Christians of St. Thomas" and claimed they were evangel-ized by the Apostle Thomas, who was martyred and buried at Mylapore near Madras.
James (The Lesser) He was the son of Alphaeus. Was he the Lord's relative? This is doubted. Was he James the younger (or the "lesser", Matt. 15:40)? There are insufficient reasons to establish this either. Nothing is known of him.
Simon He was called Cananaean and Zealot, two terms of the same Hebrew word. According to the Apocryphal "Passion of Simon and Jude", both of them preached and underwent mar-tyrdom in Persia. In the New Testament, Simon, one of the brethren of the Lord, was identified with Simon the Apostle. There were many others bearing the same name in the New Testament.
Jude He is the Apostle referred to in the Gospel as "Judas of James", "Judas not the Iscariot". He also is known as Thad-daeus or Lebbacus. Jude was the brother of James (or the son of James RV), the "brethren of the Lord" - the Lord's relative. Jude is the author of the Epistle of Jude. The Apocryphal "Passion of Simon and Jude" depicted them in Persia where they preached and underwent martyrdom.
Judas Iscariot A selected Apostle, one of the Twelve, he betrayed Christ to the Jewish Sanhedrin - the supreme council and highest court of justice in Jerusalem - and kissed the Lord at the time of the arrest. He later committed suicide. The title "Iscariot", mean-ing in the Hebrew "man of Kerioth", a place in South Pales-tine, implies that Judas was from Judea. He was the only one from there, whereas the other Apostles were from Galilee. After his suicide the Apostles elected Matthias to replace him as one of the Twelve Apostles.
