As a new member of the music department at ECI it has been an honour to work with so many talented and dedicated young artists and the many people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this show possible. As the credits reveal, this has truly been a “group effort”: I owe a debt of gratitude to all those who put in countless hours to see this project to completion, especially Karlea Kimmel who has directed the play with equal measures of panache and patience, and Margaret Potvin for her guidance and assistance with the Pit Band.

Choosing Urinetown this year meant diverging from the well-travelled path of the traditional musical canon; and it has made all the difference. Satirical, zany, farcical, even scatological—the play is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Broadway musical. But it is much more than that. Like all good art, it manages to challenge, instruct, and soothe our sensibilities. Urinetown plays with our preconceived notions of oppressor and the oppressed, delivers an important message about ecological mismanagement, while enlightening us with some of the most inspiring music you will hear anywhere.

Thank-you audience member for supporting our efforts; your presence enables us to continue fostering empathy, a love of art and the importance of hard work in these young artists--our future leaders. Buckle up and on with the show!

From the Director, Karlea Kimmel

Many have said that theatre is a place to escape from the hectic, stressful events of our daily lives. It is often known as a place to explore the optimistic possibilities of life through song, laughter and happy endings. Although it may seem otherwise, Urinetown is no exception. From the beginning, many have wondered aloud who would write a play with such an unattractive title. However, to look beyond the title is to realize the sheer brilliance of the story, the characters, the music and the message of environmental awareness. To look beyond is to see the heart, yes that muscular, blood pumping organ that this production contains. No one has made this more apparent to me than the students, artists and staff working on this production. The talent and commitment of the students at ECI has shone throughout this process and I want to thank all of you for bringing the heart to this show!

This production would not have been possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and leadership of Murray Smith as producer and music director. To all those who put their time and skills into this production I am deeply appreciative. Finally, to our audience members thank you for supporting this amazing cast and crew as they have explored, through music and drama, the possibilities that their lives hold.

We would like to thank UPS for their

Urinetown Synopsis

URINETOWN begins at the poorest, filthiest urinal in town. Officer Lockstock enters and addresses the audience directly, telling them that Urinetown is a mythical bad place that we won't see until Act Two. After a brief chat about how much exposition an audience can digest, Lockstock and Little Sally discuss the current water shortage which made expensive public toilets the only legal way to do your private business. Lockstock and the company sing of "Urinetown", the place you are sent if you try to pee (pardon our French) for free. Bobby's pa, Old Man Strong, is trying to get a free mercy pee (there's that word again) and Penny sings to him "It's a Privilege To Pee." Bobby's father then decides to use a wall to relieve himself, so Lockstock and Officer Barrel drag poor Old Man Strong off to Urinetown to be exiled.

The next scene finds us in the executive offices of the Urine Good Company and its president (and our resident villain) Caldwell B. Cladwell is having a meeting with Senator Fipp about the new fee hikes. Hope, Cladwell’s daughter enters and is going to be the new fax/copy girl for the company founded to keep the pee off the street and the water in the ground. Cladwell (and his yes men) sing a song humbly entitled ‘Mr. Cladwell’.

In "Cop Song" that evening, Lockstock and Barrel sing about the journey to Urinetown. Hope enters after a long day of faxing and copying and meets Bobby Strong, still smarting from the removal of his father to you know where. They then sing the song "Follow Your Heart" which hopes for a somewhat nicer world.

The new fees are announced the next day and Bobby and Penny talk about Bobby's feelings that perhaps the laws about peeing are just plain wrong. In "Look At the Sky" Bobby sings about a brighter, perhaps sunnier future.

At the offices of UGC, Cladwell and Fipp discuss the recent legislation. Hope talks about falling in love, and Penny enters and tells Cladwell there is free peeing at Amenity Nine where Bobby is letting people go for free. When Hope tells her father that he could try a little sympathy, he responds by singing "Don't Be the Bunny."

At the amenity, Bobby is letting everyone in for free. Cladwell arrives to snuff out the uprising and there is a big song-and-dance number involving the entire cast. That happens while Bobby discovers who Hope's father is and he and the rebels kidnap Hope, run for their lives, and the Act ends.

The second act begins in the place where Bobby and the rebels are hiding and holding Hope. In the song, "What Is Urinetown?" everyone ponders the above question giving their own views on its location. Inside the hideout, the rebels sing "Snuff That Girl" to kill Hope until Bobby explains that no man should be denied his essential humanity due to the condition of his pocketbook. Just by chance this segues in another song, "Run, Freedom, Run." Penny arrives and tells Bobby that Cladwell wants his amenities back to normal and is willing to discuss a solution with Bobby. Hope is left with the rebels as collateral and Bobby leaves for the meeting after Bobby has a little talk with Hope. She then reprises, "Follow Your Heart."

At the offices of Urine Good Company, Cladwell offers lots of cash to Bobby and full amnesty to all the rebels as long as they are willing to return to the fee schedule. Bobby refuses the cash cause he’s the hero, and Cladwell has him sent to Urinetown. Penny, Hope, and Fipp ask, "Why Did I Listen To That Man?" at the end of which Bobby is hurled from the UGC building roof into Urinetown-DEATH!

Back at the secret hideout, Little Sally tells the rebels that she saw Bobby being thrown off a building and that his last words were, "Tell Her I Love Her." It is then decided that Hope is to die but Penny (who turns out to be Hope's mother) offers her life instead. Hope then tells the rebels that together they can defeat Cladwell. They agree and march towards Cladwell's headquarters singing, "We're Not Sorry." Hope confronts her father and he tells her that love is not really the most important thing in life. He is taken away to Urinetown (we know where that is now, don't we?) proclaiming that he kept pee (there's that word again) off the street and the water in the ground. Hope sings "I See A River" with the rebels. Lockstock tells us that before long the water disappeared and that all of Cladwell's measures to regulate consumption were to spare the town the same fate as Urinetown. The story ends unhappily even though the music, as Little Sally muses, is happy. With a hail to Malthus, who in the 19th century hypothesized that unchecked population will exceed the means of subsistence unless checked (are you following all this?), the musical ends.

At this point, you will have to stop laughing at this very funny tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution. In case you hadn't guessed before, the show is a satire on issues that affect us everyday even if it does use the word "pee.”
