Where innovation meets tradition

BOMAFA was founded in 1919 as BochumerMaschinenfabrik . The founding families –Schneider & Diefenbach - concentrated onthe repairing of the valves for mining sites.

In 1935, an innovative method of armouringthe valve seat was used for the first time.This was thanks to the application of a highwear resistant material. This resulted inconsiderable demand for the new serviceand the BOMAFA legacy was born.

The experience that had been gained throughrepairing valves in power plants and chemicalindustries gave the company momentum.Consequently, Friedrich Appelberg – son-in-law of the founder Arthur Schneider – chosein 1952 to start developing and manufacturinghis own valves. Nowadays, BOMAFA concen-trates our business on producing special highquality valves.

1956 saw the production of feed water controlvalves for power stations. And just one yearlater, Friedrich Appelberg developed thetransformer as a reducing medium for pressureand temperature control. This system – whichhas been patented – is still in use to this veryday.

The 1950s and 1960s were characterised bythe production of desuperheaters, recircula-tion valves, safety control valves, steamconversion valves and other special valves.Over these two decades, BOMAFA began toearn a reputation as a trusted partner in powerand industrial plants. This reputation camethrough our ability to strictly meet the differentspecifications outlined by our customers interms of valve solutions and our ability to meetthe highest standards of both safety andprecision in our products. The growth ofBOMAFA saw the company changing locationto where we are currently based - Bochum-Wattenscheid.

Following the death of her father - ArthurSchneider – Emilie Appelberg, was appointedChief Executive Officer. And in 1975, her son–Ferdinand Appelberg – began to sell new typesof valves. These were initially sold to experi-mental reactors and latterly to nuclear powerstations. In particular, BOMAFA delivered theirproducts and services to the nuclear KONVOIproject .

In 1987, Ferdinand Appelberg founded thefirm asfa Antriebssysteme with the aim ofproducing hydraulic and pneumatic actuators.To this day asfa’s modern and high qualitycustom-made actuators are used across theworld.

Since our foundation, we at BOMAFA havesuccessfully distinguished ourselves from thecompetition and we continue to do so in manydifferent ways. We still strive for innovation,new ideas, new technology and to continuallypenetrate new markets.

Our approach of ensuring continuity is as aresult of BOMAFA remaining a family ownedcompany – the company is now under the controlof the fourth generation of the family.

In 2003, Friedrich Appelberg was appointedChief Executive Officer, the position previouslyheld by his father - Ferdinand Appelberg - from1985-2003. Ferdinand Appelberg still remainsthe owner.

The leadership of Friedrich Appelberg and theopportunities offered by a truly global markethas seen BOMAFA further expand into areassuch as the Middle East and Asia. Like our othercustomers, they too value the quality of BOMAFAvalves and the considerable know-how of ourengineers.

Made in Germany

Since the mid 19th century, BOMAFA has beensituated in the Ruhr area of Germany. This isa region which represented the focal point ofEuropean industrialization and the centre ofEnergy technology. For approximately 150 years,the Ruhr area was dominated by the coal andsteel industry. Nowadays, whilst the focus ofthe region has changed, it is still well renownedthrough its leading role in the global power,construction and metal industries.

Our being based in the Industrial Heartland ofGermany gives us significant advantages andhas ensured that we are able to work with anetwork of very competent suppliers. Indeed,the Ruhr region has a higher concentration ofcompetitive material suppliers than anywhereelse in the world. Consequently, we have awide variety of high quality steel and alloys tochoose from and this means that BOMAFAproducts are guaranteed to be made from thebest quality source materials.

BOMAFA not only operates successfullywithin the Ruhr region, but also the globalmarket. Since the early 1950s, we havefocussed on making our company trulyinternational and renowned across theglobe as a trusted partner. Indeed, for anumber of years our valves have beenpart of the Chinese coal-fired powerstations, Egyptian and Indian fertilizers,Brazilian steel-works and Libyan petroche-mical plants.

The expression ‘highest quality’ not onlyapplies to the metals that we use and thefinished products that we deliver but alsoto our machinery. At BOMAFA, ourmachinery consists of: lathes for componentsto 1600 mm diameter and sub merged ARCwelding equipment for products weighingup to 5000 kg. Furthermore, our pneumaticand hydraulic actuators are actually developedby our sister company asfa Antriebssysteme.
