KW Forage Systems: for the Dairy Farmer

KW Forage Systems: for the Beef Farmer

Michael Cleary, Nutritionist, KW Forage Systems

03INTRODUCTION

This year presents a very different challenge and will require using feeding strategies to maximise the intake of silage and make the most of what farmers have in stock.

The key to maximising silage intakes is to use the most palatable feeds with the lowest substitution rates. Concentrates fed with silage will have high substitution rates. This means that for every kilo of concentrate fed, stock eat less silage. Because moist feeds are so palatable it is possible to balance them in a diet which will actually increase intakes and make more use of silage stocks, reducing daily feed costs.

While quantity is up, some of the silage sampled so far this year is not the most palatable. If not addressed, stock will not thrive over the winter and cow health can be affected limiting next year’s performance. Moist feeds have

At KW Forage Systems we work to reducing overall feed costs over the winter period. With beef prices unsustainable at the present moment for most farmers, it causes uncertainty and reluctance for farmers to decide what way to approach beef production this year. However, with due attention, good advice and quality feed at great value, KW Forage Systems can get you well on your way to having a nished beef product that can demand the highest of value in any market.

KW Forage Systems provide the knowledge and ingredients to fully balance your entire beef nutritional

proven very useful in this situation as their palatability will mask the silage, and stock will still achieve good intakes. The energy levels and quality protein in our moist feeds will ensure good health and performance.

Many dairy farmers are not pushing for yield until after April 2015. In the mean-time the priority must be to have cows in excellent condition and as healthy as possible so they are set up for when yield becomes priority.

When it comes to health matters, the team at KW Forage Systems continue to work on a preventative basis but also offer a troubleshooting service to deal with issues such as ketosis, milk fever, retained placenta, DA’s body condition, milk quality, etc. With our Optimin range, we formulate and supply special mineral mixes in which we can include products such as biotin, yeast, chelated minerals, rumen enhancers,

protected fats, mycotoxin binders, among other specialised ingredients.

When it comes to the 2015 grazing season, our range of moist feeds as well as our use of wholecrop and maize allows us to provide high energy, very palatable buffer rations. These buffer rations are exible and can incorporate structural bre giving greater control and be used to compliment grass, control farm covers, milk quality and cow condition. They act as a means of getting extra energy into cows where yield is high, promoting a atter lactation curve to promote health and fertility early on.

requirements and maximise all your home produced feeds so as to get every kilogram of live weight gain achieved at the best value possible.

Along with nutritional advice we provide a range of supplement feeds which will complement all feeding systems, whether you have a suckler herd, grow-ing weanling or nishing unit, we challenge how to maximise every feed produced on the farm. We supply moist co-product feeds to complement your feeding system with regard to increasing palatability, digestion, and all round live weight gain performance. Along with the consideration of the

macro ingredients in the beef diet, we consider the requirement for micro feeds such as minerals, live yeasts, feed grade urea, and protected fats. As important as all macro feeds are on farm, getting the most value from those feeds in terms of production, without running into health issues such as lameness, it is extremely important to balance a diet with the relevant minerals, growth supplements and rumen buffering ingredients.

Mycotoxins are poisons produced from the secondary metabolic processes which occur naturally in a variety of moulds that grow on food crops. The amount and type of mycotoxin produced varies by the type of mould prevalent during different environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. Stress on crops from insects, weeds and weather also inuence mould growth and mycotoxin production.

Mycotoxins can lower feed consumption and feed conversion, reduce disease resistance, increase reproduc-tive problems, reduce performance and restrict genetic expression of traits.

PRO-FIT

VISTA PRE-T

PROFIT is a revolutionary feeding product, designed for use in ruminants for the entire feeding cycle and increases the net energy available to the animal by over 10%. This results in an increase in production of milk or beef with no modication of the existing diet. The results are achieved by using a unique blend of synthetically manufactured essential oils, which alter the bacterial ora within the rumen and small Intestine.

FEEDING RATES:

100g per head per day added directly into the feed wagon.

NOTE: The inclusion rates are provided as a guide for use in most circumstances, please consult with your nutritionist prior to use.

FEED AND FORAGE PRE-TREATMENT VISTAPRE-T is a feed and forage pre-treatment. It is a liquid fermentation extract from Trichoderma which when applied to feed and forage as a feed pre-treatment, starts to work immediately to make pits or holes in the surface of the bre which increases feed digestibility. Once applied to feed, VistaPre-T gets to work straight away to alter the physical and chemical structure of your forage.

FEEDING RATES:

VistaPre-T is a liquid product added to forage prior to feed-ing and water must be added. Quantity fed is dependent on DMI. Consult with your nutritionist for application rates to your forage.

KEY BENEFITS

Scientically proven to increase milk production by around 8% and meat production by 6-8%

An increase in general animal health due to the antibacterial properties of the product

Due to the modication of the bacteria in the rumen and small intestine, the manure production decreases and there is a marked decrease in Methane and Carbon Dioxide production

KEY BENEFITS

Improves digestibility of a wide range of forages

Increases D-value and ME value of different forages, especially those of poor quality and low digestibility values

Improves DM, NDF and ADF digestibility

Allows the farmer to extract more value from forage

15MOIST FEEDS

CAUSEWAYGOLDCAUSEWAYGOLD is produced in the production of whiskey. The grain is mixed with malt and water in a pressure cooker type operation to release sugars from the cereal. Yeast is then added to ferment the sugars into alcohol. This is then distilled out of the mix at high temperatures and with all solids still in situ. The solids are then pressed to extract excess moisture leaving a friable moist feed as Causewaygold.

Causewaygold can be fed to most farm livestock in a wide range of feeding situations. Whether used as part of a total mixed ration (TMR), as a sole concentrate feed or even as a forage replacer, care should be taken to ensure a good long bre source is present.

Whether fed fresh or ensiled, it is essential to exclude all air and water from the silo to successfully store the product. Failure to ensile properly may result in mould growth, loss of dry matter and reduction in nutritive value.
