Natural Rubber is a polymer with chemical structure of cis-1,4-polyisoprenewith molecular weight (MW) > 1x106.
Natural rubber is used extensively in many applications and products, eitheralone or in combination with other materials. It has excellent physicalproperties as a general purpose elastomer. However natural rubber haveseveral disadvantages (i.e. oil resistance).
To overcome the disadvantages, NR was further modified. This is widen itsapplications in NR applications
Composition Percentage (%)
Rubber 25-30%
Protein 1-1.8%
Carbohydrates 1-2%
Lipids 0.4-1.1%
Inorganic components 0.4-0.6%
Amino acids, amides, etc 0.4%
Water 50-70%

• Natural Rubber can be modified by physical and/or chemical means. • Catalyst :(i) Limited availability of petroleum-based feed stocks (ii) Increase awareness of relevance of renewable and environment friendly resources
Involves incorporation of additives which do not chemically react with
rubber
Involves with attachment or changing the NR structure

• Variable stiffness features of MRE can contribute to many
engineering applications ranging from robotic joints to shock and
vibration mitigation where variable stiffness can be used in the
tactile feedback to provide the sense of touch to the user.
• NR-based MRE could be a viable option for new MRE that can be
implemented in absorbing, shielding, thermal conducting, vibration
isolation, sound insulation, sensors and other applications which
need tunable stiffness properties.
