0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard(Fifth Revision) was adoptedby the IndianStandardsInstitution on 15 January 1975, after the draft finalized by’the WroughtSteelProducts SectionalCommitteehad been approvedbythe Structural andMetals Division Council.
0.2 This standardwasfirst issuedin 1950 in responseto arequestmadeto the Steel Advisory Committee of the Governmentof India by steelmanufacturers in the cou~ary. It was revised in 1955, 1958, 1962and 1969.
0.3 In this revision, provision has been made for removal of surfacedefects by chipping or grinding as is being followed in manyothercountries. Further, it has been made clear that this standard coversstructural steel ( standardquality ) intended to be used for all types ofstructures including thosesttbjectedto dynamic loading andwherefatigue,wide fluctuation of stresses,reversal of stresses and great restraint areinvolved asfor examplein cranegantrygirdersandroadandrail bridges.Steel specifiedin this stan atd is suitable for welding provided that thethickness of material (ices not exceed 20 mm. When the materialconforming to this standard i: over 20 mm thick, special precautionsmay berequiredin casethe material is to be welded (seeIS: 823~l964*).
0.3.1 The designations of steelshave beenaligned with the reviseddesignationsgiven in IS: I 762 (Part I )-1974t. However, the old designa-ttons are also given in parenthesislbi~ information.
0.4 The steel products conforming to the requirementsof this specifi-catton can be rolled from the billets conformitig to IS 2830-1975 orIS : 69l4-1973§.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2~l960*. The number of significant placesretainedin the rounded off value shouldbe the sameas that of the specifiedvaluein this standard.
1. SCOPE1.1 This standard covers the requirements for mild steel (standardquality) plate, sectionsand bars, etc, designated as Fe4lO-St (5t42-S)for use in structural work.
1.1.1 The steel may also be supplied in copper-bearingquality inwhich case it shall be designatedas Fe4lOCu-S(5t42-SC).
2. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL2.1 General requirements relating to the supply of steel shall conformto IS : l387-l967~.3. MANUFACTURE3.1 Steel shall be manufacturedby the open-hearth,electric, duplex,basic-oxygen or a combination of these processes. In case arty otherprocess is employed by the manufacturer, prior approval of the purchasershould be obtained.
3.1.1 Steel shall be supplied semi-killed or killed. Rimming steelshall be suppliedonly by special agreementbetweenthe purchaserandthe manufacturer.
4. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION4.1 The ladle analysis of steel, when made in accordance with IS: 228-
1959§,shall be as follows:

Nom 2—When the steelis silicon killed,tl.seproductanalysissh~ll~showa mini-mum of 010 percent silicon. When the steel is aluminium killed or killed with acombination of aluminium and silicon, tire requirementregarding minimum siliconcontent does not apply.
4.2 Product Analysis— The product analysis shall be carried out onthe finished product from the standard position. Permissible variationin case of such productanalysisfrom the limits specified under 4.1 shallbe as follows:

5. FREEDOM FROM DEFECTS
5.1 All finishedsteelshall bewell and cleanly rolled to the dimensions,sectionsandweights specified. Thefinished material shall be ‘free fromcracks; surface flaws; latninations; rough, jagged and imperfect edges;andall other harmful defects.
5.2 Minor surface defects may be removed by the manufacturerbygrinding providedthat the thicknessis notreducedlocally by more than4 percent(with amaximumof 3 mm). Reductions greater than 4 percentbut not exceeding7 percentmay be madeonly with the agreementofthe purchaser.
5.2.1 Subjectto agreementwith the purchaser,surfacedefects whichcannotbe dealtwith asin 5.2 may be repairedby chipping or grindingfollowed by welding providedthat:
a) after completeremoval of the defects .ind before welding, th~thicknessof the item is in no place reducedby more than 20percent;
b) weldingis carried out by an apprcvedprocedureby competentoperatorswith approvedelectrodesand that the weld is groundsmoothto the correctnominal thickness;and
c) subsequentto the finish grinding, the item may be requiredto be normalized or otherwiseheat~treated.at the purchaser’sdiscretion.

6. SELECTION AND PREPARATION OF TEST SAMPLES6.1 The points from which testsamplesare takenshall be so located inthe product as to yield the clearest possible information regardin~propertiesin the cross-sectionaland longitudinal pLnes. The recom-mendedlocations for taking testsamplesfor plates,sectionsandbar•sareindicatedin Fig. 1. Alternatively, in caseof sections,the samplesmay betakenfromtheweb.
6.2 Whereverpracticable,therolled surfaceof the steelshall beretainedon the two opposite sidesof the testsample.6.3 In caseof flat test samplesfor tensile test, both surfaces are normallytQ be left on the test specimenfor plateup to 32 mm thick. At least.dne rolled surfaceshall be left on rectangulat test samplestakenfromplatemorethan32 mm thick. Round test samplesare permitted, butshouldonly be adoptedfor thicknessexceeding28 mm.6.4 In caseof flats up t& 16 mm thick, the testsampleshallundergo,ifpossible,no machiningwhatsoeverprior to use as a test piece. If this isnot possible, the test sample shall undergo the minimum amountofmachining.6.5 Bars”belo~28mm mayalso be testedwithout machining. In caseofbars having diametersor thicknessesbetween28 and 71 mm, the bars-may be symmetrically reducedby machining. For barshaving diametersor thicknesses exceeding 71 mm, the test sample may be taken from theposition shown in Fig. 1.
6.6 In the case of sections, flats and plates, bend tests are to be carriedout on rectangulartest samples which, as far as possible, should be ofthe full thicknessof the product. In the caseof sections,flats andplates.exceeding28 mm in thickness,it is permissibleto remove metal fnim oneside of the testsamplebefore using it as a test piece. The rolled surfaceof the testpieceshall be on the outerside of the bendduring the test.6.7 Before test samples are detached, full particulars regarding castnumber,sizeand weightof plates,sections,flats and bars in each castshall be furnished by the manufacturerto the purchaser. In case ofplates,the numberof platesineachcast shall also be given.6.8 Test samplesshall be cut in sucha mannerthat deformationis avoid.ed as far as possible, if guillotining or flame-cutting is employed,anadequateallowanceshall be left for removalby machining.6.9 Testsamplestakenfrom rolled steelwhich haveundergonedeforma-tion through bendingor twisting shall in all casesbestraightenedcold.If the deformationis too severeto allow cold straightening,it is per-snissible, in the caseof materialsto be delivered i~ the annealedornormalizedcondition. to carry out straighteningunder the applicationof heat, provided the temperaturedoes not exceed 65000. Whilestraighteningtest samples,careshallbe takento avoid any cold-workingor temperaturerise which will alter the propertiesof the samples ascomparedwith the finished product which they represent.

6.10 Test samplesshall not be annealedor otherwisesubjectedto heattreatmentunlessthe material from which they are cut is similarly treat-ed, in which case the test samplesshall be similarly andsimultaneously
treatedwith themateria!beforetesting. Any slight straighteningof testsampleswhich may be requiredshall be donecold.
7. TENSILE TEST
7.1 Number of Tensile Tests
7.1.1 Plates,Sections( Angles,Tees,Beams,Channels,ele) andFlats— Onetensile test shall be made from finished steelfor every40 tonnes or partthereofrolled continuouslyfrom eachcast,a separatetest beingmadeforeachclass of steel product ( namely, plates, sectionsand flats ) rolledfrom a cast.
7.1.1.1 Where plates, sectionsor flats of more than one thicknessare rolled from the samecast, oneadditional tensiletest shall be madefrom the material in each classof prochtct for each viriation in thick-nessof 6 mm.
7.1.2 Ben’s ( Round, Squareand Hexagonal)— One tensile test shall bemade from finished steel for every 4U tonnes or part thereof rolledcontinuouslyfrom eachcastandfor everyclassof product. When morethan one diameter or thickness of the bar is specified, ~ne additionaltensile test shall be made for each diameter ‘or thickness of the barordered,if so desiredby the purchaser.
7.2 Tensile Test Pieces The tensile strength, yield stressandper-centageelongationof steel shell be determinedfrom standardtest piecescut lengthwiseor crosswisefront platesandlengthwisefrom sections,flatsand bars. The tests shall be carriedout on Indian Standardtest piecespreparedin accordancewith IS : I~08~l972*.
7.3 Tensile Test — The tensile strength, yield stressand percentageelongation,when determinedin accordancewith IS: l608~l972* shall beasgiven in Table I.
7.3.1 Th caseof sections,the thidtncssof whiTh is not uniform through-out the profile, the limits shall be applied accordingto the actualmaxi-mum thicknessof thepiece selectedfor testing.
7.3.2 Should a tensile test piece break outsidethemiddi~ halfof itsgauge length (seeIS: l608~l972*) and the percentage elongationol)tained is less than that specified, the test may be discar~dtd at themanufacturer’soption, and another. test made from the same plate,section,flat or bar.

8. BEND TEST
8.1 Number of Bend Tests — Bend test shall be made from finishedsteel from each cast. The number of tests for every 20 tonnes ofmaterial, or part thereof, rolled contintotssly, shall be as shown inTable2. Oneadditional test shall be made for each classof productandfor eachvariation in thickness.

8.2 Bend Test Pieces — Thetestpiecesshall becut lengthwiseor cross-ws’eor both from plates,and lengthwise from sections,flats and bars.When sectionspermit, theseshall be not lessthan 40 mm wide. If themanufacturerso desires,round, square,hexagonalandflat bars shall bebent in the full sectionas rolled.
8.2.1 In all bend test pieces, the rough edge or arris resultingfromshearing may beremoved by filing or grinding or machining, but thetr-:t piecesshall receiveno other preparatton.
8.2.2 The test piecesshall not be annealedor otherwisesubjectedtoheat treatment unless the material from which theyarecut is similarlytreated,in which casethetest piecesshall besimilarly andsimultaneouslytreatedwith the material, beforetesting.
8.3 Bend Test —~ Bend test shall be conducted in accordance witlkIS l599~l974*.
8.3.1 For bend tests except in the caseof round bars 25 mm in dia-meterandunder, the test piece when cold shall, without cracking, bedoubled over either by pressureor by blows from a hammeruntil theinternal diameteris not greater than threetimes the thicknessof the testpieceandthe sides areparallel.
8.3.2 In the case of round bars 25 mm in diameter and under, theinternal diameter of the bend shall be not gsiater than twice thediameterof the bar.
9. DIMENSIONS
9.1 Unless otherwise agreedto betweenthe purchaserand the manu-facturer the nominal dimensions of rolled steel productsconforming tothis specification shall be in accordance with the relevant IndianStandards; currently available Indian Standards are tisted in Table 3.

11. RETESTS
11.1 Should any one of the test piecesfirst selected fail to passany ofthe tests specified in this standard,two further samples shall be selectedfor testisig in respectof each failure, Should the test piecesfrom boththeseadditional samplespass,thematerial representedby the test samplesshall he (leernedto comply with the reqttiremeistsof that particular test.Shotild the test pieces from either of these additional samplesfail, thematerial representedby the test samplesshall be consideredas not havingcomplied with tlsis standard.
