Specimas slipring columns are renownfor quality, innovative design andoutstanding reliability.Thousands of units have beeninstalled in the late 35 years in allparts of the world, in all types ofharsh industrial environments.
Field of applicationApplications include dockside cranes, ships, mobile cranes, pedestal cranes, access platforms, turntables and a widevariety of mechanical handlingequipment.
Main advantages:1. Reliability
The outstanding reliability ofSpecimas slipring columns is due tomany innovative technicalsolutions backed by years ofexperience in this specialised field.
2. Resistance to corrosionThe extensive use of stainless steelfor all mechanical parts, from theframe down to the fixings, guarantees an excellent mechanicalresistance even in particularyhostile climates and environments, without maintenance.
3. FlexibilityA unique characteristic of theslipring columns is the possibilityto meet almost any requirementsby using a wide range of componentsespecially developed andmanufactured by Specimas.
4. CompactnessThe special design of the Specimasrings enable the construction ofvery compact sections, stillensuring a high degree of electricalinsulation and a perfect contact.
5. Wiring facilitiesAll side panels on the Specimasslipring column can easily beremoved thus providing good accessfor wiring to rings and brushgear. The signal rings are, as standard, prewired to a numbered terminalblock.
KP BrushStand still slipring applications oftenrequire a high degree of derating of theamperage carrying capacity ofconventional carbon brushgear.Increasing the physical size of thebrushes is not always a solution, sincethe actual contact area does notincrease proportionally. Specimas hasovercome this(problem by developing amulticontact brushgear which has
Continuous current 300 Amp Temperature Conventional brush Temperature Kp-brush
The Slipring Columns

effectively doubled the capacity. Thisis achieved by dividing the brush intoindependent sections, thus ensuringan increased effective contact area. The diagram shows a comparisonbetween a conventional brushgear(BG) and a multi-contact brushgear(KP) of the same physical sizecarrying 300 Amp continuous.

Optional equipment for type KK135, KK 270, KK450
The modular design of slipring makesit suitable to combine with optionaldevices as specified by the client.
Extra devices are generally mercurywetted signal sliprings such asMercotac or gold plated signal slipringcapsules such as Aurotac (refer to thespecific catalogues) or swivels for air, water and oil.
In some cases it is possible to combineslipring columns with fiber opticrotary joints.
An encoder is mounted on the ring assemblytop and driven by means of an elastic joint.
A pneumatic swivel – the tube is insertedinside the ring assembly.
A signal slipring capsule Mercotac or Aurotacis arranged on top of the ring assembly.
An ex-proof slipring is fit on the slipringhousing cover and driven by a stainless steeltube which is also the ex-proof collector cableconduit. Designed for easy maintenance.
Oil, swivel (designed by Specimas according toclient specifications) is fitted below theslipring and becomes also base bearing.

Slipring Columns with central hollow passage
The lower part of the picture shows the power ringswith copper bars which connect the brushes. In theupper section 28 control ring are arranged. Both ringsand brushes may be prewired to junction boxes ( seeabove illustration). A slewing ring allows an accurateand silent movement. Central passage diameter, enclosure height and other main dimensions may bedesigned on request to meet customer requirements.
DescriptionThe slipring column is a single assem-bly built on a robust base-bearing. Thering column is connected to the innerring of this base-bearing whilst thebrushgear assembly is mounted on a in-ternal structure bolted to a base platefixed onto the outer ring of the base-bearing. The housing is built with acentral hollow passage as required byclient. A lateral door is supplied for ac-cess to rings and brushes. Cabling ismade on both sides indesignated terminal boxes. Optionalclient specified components can bemounted in the connection boxes if spaceis available.
InstallationThe slipring assembly is designed to beinstalled in a vertical position. The housing, supporting the brushgearassembly, is provided with a driving-forkwhich drives the rotating part of theslipring through a non-rigid system, inorder to compensate for possible mount-ing misalignments between slipringand containing structure. It is impor-tant therefore to maintain this flexibil-ity also in case a different driving sys-tem is adopted.

The range of sliprings distribuited bythe Cavotec sales companies includesnot only the sliprings columnsmanufactured by Specimas andillustrated in this catalogues, but alsothe Alfo sliprings with a range up to150A, the Mercotac and the Aurotacconnectors.
Alfo GSK-unitsCompact modular design and 2 mainranges up to 150 A. High-strengthIP65 GRP boxes. Multi-layer silver-rhodium rings/brushes transfer deli-cate mA control signals reliably, withhigh sensitivity and low noise level.Max voltage 690V. These strong andreliable units are used in numerousdifferent automation applications,waste-water processing units, lifts etc.
Other Cavotec Sliprings
Aurotac connectorsMain features are: goldplated contactsurfaces, small size and strong construc-tion that stands up to a demandingenvironment. The reliable contactscan transfer extremely sensitivedigital and analog signals as well asRS/RF connections and up to 25 Ampspower. As well as being excellent forapplications where there is no roomfor larger units, they can also be mountedas an extension on Specimas and Alfosliprings to handle the most demand-ing signals.
Mercotac connectorsMercotac combines mercury with com-patible metals to form highly reliablerotating electrical connections for up to8 channels with low resistence and ca-pacitance. They are ideal for transmit-ting signal and control circuits, in ap-plications where high revolutions perminute, low (electrical) noise, and lowresistance prohibit the use of conventionalsliprings. Durable, compact, mainte-nance free ball bearing construction.
Fiber optic rotary accumulators(GFO)Specimas has developed a fibre opticrotary accumulator of heavy-dutydesign for rugged environment. Thesystem can also be used as a stand–alone rotary accumulator. The signaltransmission is uninterrupted: the onlylosses are due to the fibres andconnectors themselves. This unit issupplied with a limited number ofrevolutions (40 or 80).
