Feedback on Speeches • Great job on your first speech!

• Posture / eye contact – don’t sway back and forth, don’t just look at me (or the white board)! • Volume – make sure you’re loud and clear for people in the back • Content – show full understanding of your topic • Enthusiasm – use facial expressions and body language well • Time-limit – 3 to 4 ½ minutes

Next week is Speech #2 (Sign up sheet is being pass around) • Informative Speech, 3 – 4 ½ minutes, topic of your choice• You will be graded on: • Posture• Eye Contact • Gestures • Volume • Voice inflection, pitch, intonation • Content (Well thought out thesis + supporting points)• Proper use of props, multimedia • Time-limit

• In addition to myself grading, students will be grading as well. (I will adjust any unfair scores).

Using Visual Aids• Types of visual aids: • Objects and models • Photographs and drawings • Graphs (line, bar, pie, etc.)• Chart • Video and audio clips • The speaker him/herself

Guidelines for Visual Aids • Prepare them in advance – practice with them• Keep them simple • Make sure they are large enough • Use a limited amount of text • Use color effectively • Use images strategically

Presenting Visual Aids • Put them where the audience can see them • Display them only when you are talking about them • Explain them clearly and concisely • Talk to your audience, not to your visual aid • Check the room and the equipment

Audience Perception – group chat •What kind of credibility do you bring with you to your speech as a HUFS student? • What topics would it be easier for you to credibly speak about? •What can you do to enhance your credibility during your speech? • What would you to enhance your credibility if you were asked to present about living in Korea to a group of foreign diplomats who just moved to Korea?

Homework for Tomorrow (Wednesday)

Create a 30 second (or less) message in a foreign language you are learning + explain what you said in English.

1. First introduce yourself, your major, why you are learning that language and how proficient you are in it (for audience credibility),

2. then say your message in the foreign language, followed by its English equivalent.

3. Use any extra time to help your group learn some words or phrases in your language!
