SPEECH & HEARING
“Language is not an abstract
construction of the learned, or of
dictionary makers, but is
something arising out of the
work, needs, ties, joys, affec-
tions, tastes, of long
generations of humanity, and
has its bases broad and low,
close to the ground. “

Departmental Re-

SPLAD Open House By: Lara Scheidler-Smith, MA, CCC-SLP
The delicious smell of catered food filled the air and tasteful décor arrayed the Speech-Language Pa-
thology and Audiology Department during the afternoon hours of September 25th. “Why would the
SPLAD department be decked out on such an ordinary day?”, one might ask. To have an open house
and dedication of the newly approved Master of Science program for Speech-Language Pathology, of
course!
The inaugural class of SPLAD Graduate students mingled with the faculty, students and staff who
joined our department in celebrating this achievement. The savory bruschetta, meatballs and spinach
and artichoke dip provided a tasteful centerpiece for this event. Andrews University catering truly out-
did themselves with veggie and fruit trays as well.
At 3pm, a special dedication was led by President Andreasen, who spoke about our ability to communi-
cate as an aspect of what makes us, as humans, “be in the image of God.” He went on to indicate that
training in a field that facilitates this ability for humanity is one to be supported.
During this dedication time, Mrs. Ferguson, Chairperson of the SPLAD Department along with School
of Health Professions Dean, Dr. Emmanuel Rudatsikira brought tears to many an eye with her heart felt
thank yous and flowers for all of the people working together to bring this goal of an MS in Speech-
Language Pathology to fruition. Unfortunately, Provost Andrea Luxton as unable to attend the event,
although she was instrumental and supportive in the approval of the Master’s degree program. This
open house was a blessed reprieve and time to reflect on the Lord’s blessings and leading amidst a
time of great change and striving.

SPLAD Club Beach Bash By: Aurianna Anobile
The 2014-2015 School year is here and we started it out with a beautiful sunset
bash! The official SPLAD welcome back party took place on the second Sunday of
September at the Regal Family cottage.
Although we were worried about the weather, the Lord blessed us with a beautiful
sunset by the lake. We had a very good turnout of SPLAD students and faculty
enjoying a campfire, snacks, roasted hotdogs (even though they kept falling off the
roasting sticks) and yummy s’mores. After the meal, we enjoyed games and a
boat ride on the lake.
It was so much fun getting to hang out and have some relaxed fellowship with
friends. It was also a very important day because our own Alyssa Blackmer cele-
brated her birthday! We were so excited to be able to spend the happy day with
her.
The SPLAD Department is here for you!
This school year is going to bring so many experiences and memories. My prayer
for the SPLAD department is that we take each moment and treasure it. This is
YOUR department, take advantage of the resources available to you! We are
blessed to have amazing teachers and faculty that are very helpful and supportive.
I know that this year will also bring some difficulties and challenges, and I know
that there are times when life seems so overwhelming that you want to give up.
Remember that you not only have a full department to back you up, you also have
the God of the Universe in your corner.
So yes, that class may be crazy, working that job is exhausting, and those loud
neighbors may never let you sleep. But when those overwhelming moments
come, try to remember to pause for a few seconds, take a deep breath, and lay
your burdens down on the Ultimate Stress Reliever. You don’t have to do it all
yourself. He not only can handle it, He wants to!
I am so excited to see what this year brings! I hope to see all our SPLAD students at the next event.
If you have any ideas, we would love to hear them. You can tell any of the SPLAD officers, or email us at [email protected]
Remember that you have a whole
SPLAD family who always has
your back!
2014-2015 BRING IT ON!
God provided a beautiful sunset.

SPLAD students offered a total of 58 screenings.
Health and Fitness Expo By: Heather Ferguson, MS-CCC/SLP
On Sunday, September 28, 2014 the SPLAD department participated in
the Annual Health and Fitness Expo. This expo offered the university
family, the community and alumni the opportunity to engage in various
activities all in an effort to draw attention to a “healthier you.”
The Health Expo had several booths such as the Department of Nursing
that offered blood pressure screenings and blood/glucose testing. The
Department of Public Health, Nutrition, and Wellness offered cooking
demonstrations and gymnastic demonstrations.
In keeping with the theme of health and wellness, the SPLAD students
and faculty worked the booth offering speech and language screenings,
hearing screenings, and general speech, language and hearing infor-
mation. The students offered a total of 58 screenings. Many participants
were happy and felt blessed to have the students offer this service. We
are so blessed to have the opportunity to offer the public peace of mind or
just simply answer questions.

Departmental Reminders
Water for Students A new school year brings new stressors, new assignments, late nights, and, at times, ques-
tionable nutritional habits. We want to remind you to take good care of your body by getting
lots of rest, taking time to relax, eating healthfully, and drinking lots of water. For this reason,
the SPLAD department has made drinking water available in the conference room to Gradu-
ate students.
However, we ask that you please remember that we have a limited supply and budget. Last
month we ran out of water two weeks before our scheduled delivery date. Be mindful of fellow
students and faculty and staff when taking water; it has to last for all of us! We thank you in
advance for your consideration.
Lock the Back Door! The bathrooms located outside the back door of the SPLAD department are available for
Graduate student use. Please remember to lock the door after coming back in. The back door
must remain locked at all times. This is important for your safety and the safety of other stu-
dents and faculty and staff in the department.
October 8, 2014— The SPLAD Club is hosting a study night in the department from
6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Bring your homework and enjoy fellowship and support while
studying. Sign up sheets will be posted at the front desk of the SPLAD Department.

1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Please bring your favorite dish! Sign up sheets will be posted at
the front desk of the SPLAD Department.
