Best Internet Provider United States Q2-Q3 2018
How Speed Score WorksWhen analyzing best operators, Ookla solely considers top carriers (all carriers with 3% or more of total test samples in the market for the period). We then determine the best carrier using Speed Score which incorporates a measure of each provider’s download and upload speed to rank network speed performance (90% of the final Speed Score is attributed to download speed and the remaining 10% to upload speed). The Speed Score uses a modified trimean to demonstrate the download and upload speeds that are available across a provider’s network. We take speeds from the 10th percentile, 50th percentile (also known as the median), and 90th percentile, and combine them in a weighted average using a 1:2:1 ratio, respectively. We place the most emphasis on the download speeds and median speeds as those represent what most network providers’ customers will experience on a day-to-day basis.
4K ASRThe 4K Acceptable Speed Ratio (4K ASR) measures what percent of each carrier’s test samples deliver optimal download speeds (equaling or exceeding 25 Mbps) for streaming 4K video. As 4K video streaming is one of the more demanding uses of a home internet connection, this speed should also allow a consumer to easily enjoy a full range of internet activities (including working from home, gaming and social media) without interruption. While we at Ookla think fast speeds are paramount, ensuring a minimum acceptable experience is also a worthy measure of a network’s quality.
XFINITY had the highest 4K ASR during Q2-Q3 2018 with 84.5% of their samples meeting or exceeding the 25 Mbps threshold for download speed. Spectrum and Cox were a close second and third at 83.5% and 81.7%, respectively. AT&T Internet showed download speeds of 25 Mbps or higher just over half the time. The 4K ASR for CenturyLink was 34.6%.
