T here may still be six races to go in the 2011 Formula One World Championship, but this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix marks the end of the European season.

While the Formula One teams somehow manage to roll out more extravagant motor homes each year, the sport’s expansion out of Europe over the last decade has seen the truck-based facilities used for a far smaller portion of the season.

Just 13 years ago, the calendar saw 11 of 16 ‘home’ races for the Formula One teams - meaning almost 70% of the season was completed within Europe.

By contrast, this year’s championship sees just 42% of the races run in Europe, with that number set to decrease further in 2012 thanks to the much anticipated return of the United States Grand Prix.

The Monza event captures all that is grand about the European races - with the word passionate a major understatement for describing the local fans.

The circuit is dripping in history too, having held a round of the championship every year since it began in 1950, following on from 30 years of hosting pre-World Championship Grands Prix.

Formula One’s recent push into the Asian and Middle Eastern markets has seen some great circuits and events added to the calendar, but for traditional Formula One theatre, little can compare to the stage upon which the drivers and teams will perform this weekend.

Green means go!

Race Guide

COVER STORY

All eyes will be on the wing packages this weekend in Monza as the downforce

versus drag equation takes on maximum importance on the Italian circuit’s long straights.

Speeds up to 350km/h are expected to be reached thanks to the combination of KERS and DRS allowed in the 2011 regulations.

For just the third time this season, two DRS zones will be used at Monza - the first between Lesmo 2 and Ascari, and the second between the Parabolica and the first Variante.

According to McLaren’s Jenson Button, who fought Fernando Alonso for the victory in Italy last year, the DRS has the potential to really spice up the race this year.

“It’s going to be the usual difficult trade-off between drag and downforce to find the ultimate package for the race... but I think things will be a little more mixed-up this year,” says Button of the race.

“The first (DRS) zone’s going to be interesting because it’s always been very tough to challenge for position under braking for Ascari.

“The track’s pretty narrow and it’s a fast entry – so I’ll be

really interested to see how well DRS will work into that corner – we might see some pretty spectacular moves!

“I think the more conventional passing opportunity will come from the second DRS zone, getting as close as possible into Parabolica, holding on through the corner – which won’t be straightforward – and then deploying DRS down the start/finish straight before, hopefully, passing into Turn 1.

“The DRS is going to be a pretty major asset for a following car, and it might shape the race in some really interesting ways.”

As usual, practice and qualifying will see drivers allowed to use the DRSs at any point on the circuit - a rule Button’s team-mate Lewis Hamilton is looking forward to taking full advantage of this weekend.

“I’m particularly looking forward to qualifying, because I think DRS will make a huge difference to our laptimes, and I really want to get the maximum out of the car in quali - and then look forward to a strong race, of course,” says Hamilton, who crashed out at Monza last year.

“With unlimited use in quali, and those four long straights, I

Round 13 – Monza

think qualifying is going to be pretty intense: we’ll be 20km/h faster at four key points of the circuit, so our quali times are going to be much faster than in the race. That should be pretty exciting.

“For the race, you’ll also need the downforce, though, because you’ll want to be quick enough out of the second Lesmo and Parabolica to be in with a chance of challenging for position down the following straight.

“I think things are set for another very closely matched race. I’m really looking forward to it.””

RED BULL RACING THE BAGMAN’S SAYSebastian Vettel returned to the

top step of the podium at Spa, leading a Red Bull one-two on a circuit not expected to suit the RB7s.

The team remains unbeaten in qualifying this season, and taking into account the success of the high-speed aerodynamic package they brought to Spa, Red Bull will once again start as favourites this weekend.

Webber must improve his starts if he is to have a chance to challenge for the victory. With a dry, potentially two-stop race expected this weekend, the Australian will not be able to benefit from midrace chaos to regain ground lost early.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYHamilton and Button are both

yet to win at Monza, and attacked the race very differently last year with respect to their aerodynamic set-ups.

Opting for a slightly higher downforce/higher drag package, Button proved most competitive, but lost the race to Alonso on pit strategy.

The 2009 World Champion recovered from a qualifying disaster at Spa to finish as best of the non-Red Bulls in third.

Hamilton crashed out of the 2010 Italian Grand Prix, as he did last time out in Belgium, and may need to temper his aggression in order to take his third win of the season.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYAlonso took a brilliant victory

last year at Monza - his first Italian Grand Prix racing for the Scuderia.

A repeat will be a tough proposition this year however, with the Ferrari continuing to prove uncompetitive on anything other than the softer Pirellis.

The low wearing nature of the Monza layout should mean that only a small stint will be required with the medium compound rubber this weekend, giving the Tifosi some hope that the team can challenge Red Bull and McLaren.

Massa’s qualifying form has improved of late, but the upturn in speed has had little effect on his results.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYRosberg was a surprise early

race leader last time out at Spa, before the Red Bull/McLaren/Ferrari juggernaut quickly asserted its collective authority.

Still, fifth for Schumacher (from 24th on the grid) and sixth for Rosberg were solid results for the Brackley squad - indicating another potentially strong weekend is in store at Monza.

The car’s engine and KERS package is one of the strongest in the field, and while the W02 has struggled to produce the downforce levels of the top runners, its high-speed aerodynamic efficiency appears not too far away.

Should be just ahead of the midfield pack and ready to pounce on any issues for the top six.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYDespite failing to score points,

Renault left the Belgium Grand Prix optimistic that it had made a step forward with its aerodynamic package.

The team’s driver line-up, however, was the main talking point at Spa, with Nick Heidfeld dumped in favour of Bruno Senna.

The Brazilian quickly answered the critics of his appointment by qualifying an outstanding seventh, before undoing the good work with a clumsy first-corner shunt.

With Petrov having scored points just once in the past five races, any finish in the top 10 will be a great result for either driver this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYPastor Maldonado didn’t let a

21st grid position or a damaged front-wing stop him from scoring his first career point with 10th place at Spa.

Williams will head to Monza optimistic of more points following its relatively competitive showing at Spa.

Monza’s low tyre wear characteristic should help mask the Achillies Heal of the FW33, while lead driver Barrichello is a three-time Italian Grand Prix winner.

Getting through to Q3 will again prove very difficult, but sneaking into the points is not impossible for either driver.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYAdrian Sutil made the most

of Force India’s renowned low-downforce package at Spa, maintaining his record of scoring points in every second Grand Prix since Turkey.

The German qualified on the front-row at Monza just two years ago, before going on to finish fourth.

While those dizzying heights are unlikely to be repeated this weekend, more points could be on the cards.

Di Resta meanwhile was left to rue the timing of a midrace Safety Car having finished 11th at Spa, and has yet to race at Monza in any class.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYFollowing Kobayashi’s string

of points scoring finishes during the opening third of the season, Sauber has found itself myriad in the tough midfield battle of late.

After another point-less weekend in Belgium, the team sits just three points ahead of Force India in the battle for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Points will again be a difficult prospect this weekend, with the C30’s main attribute - low tyre consumption - not expected to play a key role.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYToro Rosso heads to the scene of

its 2008 triumph off the back of a disastrous Belgium Grand Prix.

Alguersuari was taken out in the first corner melee caused by Bruno Senna, while a separate incident saw Buemi sidelined by a broken rear wing just six laps later.

Alguersuari had made the most of the mixed conditions in qualifying to score seventh on the grid however - continuing his impressive turnaround in form.

The team has received a financial boost from Spanish oil company Cespa since Spa, which will further brighten the young Spanish driver’s chances of retaining his drive next season.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYTeam Lotus has played down

suggestions that it can challenge the midfield runners this weekend, despite appearing to have made relative gains at Spa.

Kovalainen again made the most of a mixed qualifying session to make Q2, before finishing one position behind team-mate Trulli in 15th on Sunday.

Both cars ran reliably for the duration of the Grand Prix - an achievement in itself given the difficulties faced across the previous three races.

While the team is still a fair way away from scoring points, more solid finishes will be a great result this weekend.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYThe Hispania drivers both made

the most of the opening lap chaos at Spa - with Ricciardo and Liuzzi vaulting seven and five places up the order from their grid positions respectively in the early going.

A lack of reliability (Ricciardo’s car stopping with a rear-end vibration after just 13 laps) and pace (Liuzzi coming home as the 19th and final finisher) meant it was a less than positive weekend however.

Getting both cars home in Monza should be the first goal.

THE BAGMAN’S SAYVirgin Racing will unleash its

long awaited major upgrade package this weekend in a bid to move from the foot of the Constructors’ Championship table.

While new rear wings will be common place throughout the field thanks to Monza’s unique aerodynamic requirements, the VR02s will also sport revised engine covers, sidepods, exhausts and rear floors.

Both cars ran reliably in the Belgium Grand Prix - finishing ahead of Liuzzi’s Hispania.
